Alex Thomson, Hugo Boss: Keel Walk, Mast Walk, Road to Vendee

Alex Thomson attempts the Keel Walk:

8 tonnes of carbon fibre yacht, a 255 horsepower jet ski, 45 combined years of sailing experience, and one crazy guy in a suit. Alex Thomson attempts what he calls 'The Keel Walk', a stunt that has become infamous throughout the world thanks to the iconic image of Alex 'riding' the keel of his 60ft yacht 'HUGO BOSS'. Uploaded Jan 27, 2012.

The Mast Walk by Alex Thomson:

Solo round the world yachtsman Alex Thomson performs a daring feat on board his high-speed yacht, HUGO BOSS: He climbs up the 30-meter high mast of the moving vessel and dives into the ocean. Published March 3, 2014.

Finish Village in Port Olona (Vendée Globe Esplanade)

New York – Vendée (Les Sables d’Olonne): a challenging final trial run before the Vendée Globe. Setting sail from the ‘Big Apple’, bound for what was the cradle of the IMOCA Class, the port of Les Sables d’Olonne, one could hardly ask for more in terms of symbolism. On the one hand, New York, a cosmopolitan crossroads of influences, is a perfect illustration of the international aspirations of both IMOCA and Open Sports Management. On the other, France’s Vendée region, represents the heart of the IMOCA class, thanks to its legendary solo round the world race, in which some of the most extraordinary episodes on the high seas have occurred over the last twenty-five years. The final opportunity to qualify for the Vendée Globe in race configuration, the New York – Vendée (Les Sables d’Olonne) promises to be a significant event in the IMOCA Ocean Masters Championship. Above all, the New York – Vendée will be the final major confrontation in singlehanded configuration before to the ultimate event in the IMOCA Ocean Masters World Championship 2015- 2016.

Glabart poised to win Vendee Globe in record time
NBCNews.com
LES SABLES D'OLONNE, France (AP) - French sailor Francois Gabart is set to win the Vendee Globe solo around-the-world yacht race in record time. The 29-year-old Gabart is the youngest skipper competing in the seventh edition of the race. He's expected to reach the finish in western France early Sunday in his yacht MACIF....

Vendée Globe - Vendée Globe 2012-2013: "The winner’s finish: Live coverage in English and French will be available on the official Vendée Globe website, the iPhone and iPad app as well as DailyMotion and YouTube. The live coverage will begin about 30 minutes before the boat crosses the finish line and will end two hours later, once the skipper has gone through the podium ceremony."

Jean-Pierre Dick continues to head for Vendée Globe finish despite losing keel

In a remarkable display of tenacity and seamanship French solo sailor Jean-Pierre Dick is continuing to head for the finish of the Vendée Globe round the world race despite having lost his keel. First reaction was to head for safety in the Azores, but ...

No sailing outside of the port - Vendée Globe 2012-2013: "Because of the difficult weather conditions (rough cross sea and 3-metre swell, 20 to 25-knot wind with gusts up to 40 knots), the marine authorities have issued an official statement prohibiting sailing outside the Sables d'Olonne port after 7AM on Sunday. Only the organisation boat (officially judging the finish) and two speedboats for image production. " We just want to make sure this great moment will not be spoiled by accidents, explained Vendée marine delegate Hugues Vincent. It is strongly recommended not to sail offshore, even though it is authorised. ""

Jean-Pierre Dick "Thank you very much Alex" - Vendée Globe 2012-2013: ""Supported" by Alex Thomson since Friday - The British skipper changed his course to stay alongside the French sailor who is currently sailing his boat without a keel - Jean-Pierre Dick thanked his British shadow."

Dick: " I'm not stopping in the Azores " - Vendée Globe 2012-2013: "I've thought hard about what to do next. I'm definitely not stopping inthe Azores. But I'm still not sure I'll go all the way to Les Sables d'Olonne. I'm going to sail closer to the Portuguese coast to analyse the weather as thoroughly as I can. On January 28 or 29, I think i'll be able to decide what to do. Right now I think I can safely sail in the direction of Portugal. My priority is my heading and getting where I want to be, not my speed."

The solo sailing blog: A couple of setbacks | Alex Thomson | Independent Notebook Blogs: "On 9 December at 2220 GMT I hit something in the water while travelling at 22 knots. I was at the navigation table at the time, and heard a loud bang forward of where I was, which I think must have been something hitting either the keel or the daggerboard.  I heard a series of softer bangs as whatever I hit bumped along under the hull and a final big bang as it hit the rudder and hydro generator. By the time I got to the companionway hatch the rudder was in the air and the hydro generator was dragging in the water. . .  "
