Francois Gabart MACIF Takes Line Honors in The Transat bakerly 2016

MACIF crossed The Transat bakerly finish line at 18:24 EDT (22:24 GMT) Tuesday off New York:

NEWSFLASH: Gabart takes line honours in The Transat bakerly 2016 | News | The Transat bakerly"Frenchman François Gabart on board his new 100ft trimaran Macif, crossed The Transat bakerly finish line at 18:24 EDT (22:24 GMT) this evening off New York, taking line honours in the Ultime class. The finish time, recorded by the Sandy Hook Pilot Association boat, marks the first solo race win on Macif for the 33-year-old, who in 2013 became the youngest ever winner of the VendĂ©e Globe solo round-the-world race. Gabart covered the official course distance of 3,050 nautical miles in 8 days, 8 hours, 54 minutes and 39 seconds. Gabart actually sailed a total distance of 4,634 miles at an average speed of 23.11 knots in a remarkable voyage. Unusually for The Transat bakerly, it took him, and his close rival Thomas Coville on Sodebo, hundreds of miles south of the Azores into the tradewinds before sling-shouting northwest up to New York. As Gabart crossed the line Coville was still some 118nm from the finish while the third-placed trimaran in the Ultime class – Actual skippered by Yves Le Blevec – was still 509.6nm away ..."

The Finish Line Awaits | Transat Jacques Vabre 2015 : Le Havre - Itajai | October 2015 | Take to the seas and act for the planet: "Francois Gabart and Pascal BidĂ©gorry are on the home stretch with no significant weather hurdles remaining on the 5400 miles Transat Jacques Vabre course which left Le Havre on Sunday 25th October. At 1600hrs UTC this Friday afternoon they had 314 miles standing between their bows of Macif and the finish line in ItajaĂ. Second placed Thomas Coville and Jean Luc NĂ©lias on Sodebo Ultim are 178 miles behind and have been averaging three knots slower than Macif which is making 27 to 28kts. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, victory should be Macif’s in the early hours of Saturday morning. Skipper Francois Gabart, who won the VendĂ©e Globe on his first attempt at just 29 years old in January 2013, said today that the final 40 miles into the finish line will be complicated, but their margin over second placed Sodebo Ultim’ should be enough to secure a maiden race victory...." “ I exchanged text messages with François, very short messages. He told me the visibility was under two miles, he’s sailing ahead of a (cold) front . . . It is a very emotional moment, but I’m afraid he doesn’t have time to enjoy it because the data collected by CLS shows there’s ice all over the area. . . ."

Sailing in Marin: Cayard meets America's Cup challenge on home turf - Marin Independent Journal: ". . . . Each team is allowed three wing sails and two boats. It's a massive undertaking says Paul Cayard, CEO of Artemis Racing, Challenger for the America's Cup representing the Royal Swedish Yacht Club. . . It's a heck of a lot of work for the boat builders and the shore team to maintain, Cayard explained. And it's just one part of competing in the America's Cup which will be raced on the bay in September. Cayard's been around the Cup for 30 years so he has the experience it takes to run a world-class sailing team. But this challenge has been more than just building a boat or two. Artemis Racing is a completely new team, unlike its competition Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL), Luna Rossa (ITA) and Oracle Racing (USA). Cayard has built Artemis pretty much from scratch. He started about two years ago and today the team, which is based in Alameda, has 120 people. "It's a medium-sized business . . . "
