Oracle Penalized 2 America's Cup Races, Kiwis Win Red Bull Youth

Scheduled for Thursday,  September 5, 2013 at  12:30 pm EDT (US), 4:30 pm  UTC (1630)
AMERICA'S CUP OPENING SKIPPERS PRESS CONFERENCE video above

Spithill: “We’re the underdogs” / America’s Cup: "“We’ve got four days to get organized,” Spithill said. “We’re going to get our two boats out there tomorrow (Wednesday). Now we know who we can sail with. We’ll probably sail one boat on Thursday and we’ll decide afterwards about whether we go out on Friday.” Spithill says this is a challenging situation for the defender, who now finds itself as the underdog. “There’s no question in my mind that Team New Zealand are the favourites here. We’re in an underdog position now,” he said."

International Jury decisions issued on ORACLE TEAM USA AC45 yachts / America’s Cup: "To win the America’s Cup, a team must score nine points, the highest ever number in the competition’s 162 year-old history. The defender now starts with a deficit score of minus-2 and must win 11 races to retain the trophy. Emirates Team New Zealand, the challenger, is unaffected and must win 9 races as before."

Oracle Down 2 Races Before America’s Cup Starts - NYTimes.comOracle Team USA will begin defense of the America’s Cup on Saturday with a two-race deficit after being penalized for prohibited modifications to its racing yachts in 2012. Oracle will begin the best-of-17 event with a score of minus 2. To capture the America’s Cup, Oracle will have to win 11 races. The challenger, Emirates Team New Zealand, will need to win 9 races. A five-member international America’s Cup jury also barred a veteran Oracle sailor, the wing trimmer Dirk de Ridder, and two shore team members from the race. Another team member was suspended for the first four races. The team was also fined $250,000.

Oracle hit with unprecedented penalties for America's Cup cheating | Reuters: "The Cup finals are a best-of-17 series, and Oracle will now enter the event two points behind: it will need to win 11 races to win the series, while New Zealand will only need to win 9. Oracle will also be sailing without a key crew member, Dirk de Ridder, a 40-year-old Dutchman who was banished from the event for his role in the weight scandal. Another Oracle sailor was suspended for the first 4 races, and two shore crew members were barred from any further participation."

Kiwis and Portuguese top the table at the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup / America’s Cup: "The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup provided thrills, spills and plenty of action over four days of intense competition on San Francisco Bay. On Wednesday, the New Zealand Sailing Team with Emirates Team New Zealand recovered from a poor start to beat their fierce rivals on Full Metal Jacket (NZL) and the ROFF/Cascais Sailing Team from Portugal to win the inaugural title. The leaderboard was tight, leading to tense moments on the final day. Just three points separated second from fifth place. When the Swiss Team TILT won race 7, they became the sixth different team to claim a race win in the regatta. Race 8 – which was to score double points – was cancelled with the winds on San Francisco Bay over the limit. . . ."

Red Bull Youth America’s Cup – Results:
1. NZL Sailing Team with Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL) 2-RDG-7-3-1-1-4 – 57 points
2. Full Metal Jacket Racing (NZL) 7-1-4-6-6-3-5 – 45 points

America's Cup Match Racing preview

The America's Cup is a Match Race -- 2 boats and only one winner, there is no "second" --  Queen Victoria, who was watching at the finish line of the first America's Cup in 1851, was reported to have asked who was second, the famous answer being: "Ah, Your Majesty, there is no second." This year the winner will either be Oracle Team USA (the "defender") or Emirates Team New Zealand a/k/a the "Kiwis" (the "challenger"). Racing starts Saturday, September 7th.

Experts foresee good matchup for America's Cup - SFGate"As Gary Jobson sees it, the Kiwis are like "a well-choreographed Broadway show" and the Oracle sailors are "still auditioning." He also thinks the Emirates Team New Zealand crew might have an edge in motivation. Unlike the Oracle guys, they're sailing for their country. As Nathan Outteridge sees it, Oracle has a slight speed edge upwind. The key will be not just getting to the first mark first but leading at the bottom, or second mark. "That's probably going to determine the race," he said. Jobson and Outteridge are expert commentators on the TV coverage of the America's Cup regatta, the experienced Jobson handling the in-race analysis and the newcomer Outteridge providing postrace commentary. Both say it's difficult to predict the outcome of the finals - a welcome case after the tedious predictability of the first seven weeks of the regatta...."
