America's Cup pits U.S., New Zealand with San Francisco as backdrop - latimes.com: "The newly designed AC72 catamarans have the ability to hydrofoil, meaning when the boat reaches a certain speed, the hydrofoils generate enough lift for the two hulls to clear the water and glide just on the foils that are under the boat. This means reduced hull drag and increased speed. Spectators will be able to watch the boats “fly” during the races. This also marks the first time the America’s Cup racing is inshore rather than offshore. The race course is within the confines of the San Francisco Bay instead of being three miles off-shore as it has been in the past, allowing spectators to see the race much more closely than before, so much so that sailors can hear the cheering crowd. For those interested in experiencing the America’s Cup, Piers 27/29 along San Francisco’s Embarcadero have been transformed into America’s Cup Park for the summer...."

Sailing in Marin: Sausalito's 86-year-old still going strong in Knarr competition - Marin Independent Journal: The Knarr is a unique boat — and fleet — for many reasons, all of which have kept the intrigue for Wibroe as fresh as the day he first sailed one. Full-keeled and very heavy, the boats are 30-feet long and sailed with a main and jib, no spinnaker. There's nothing high performance about them — they're a 70-year-old classic design, all built in Scandinavia. As old and slow as they are, the local fleet numbers some 42 boats, the largest on the bay after the J/105s, with up to 24 frequently on the start line. Wibroe tends to think they're also the most fair fleet racing. . . .

Louis Vuitton Cup Finals tied 1-1 (videos)

Louis Vuitton Cup Final Race 2 Start Luna Rossa helmsman Chris Draper did a nice job in the pre-start to get a fairly even start against Emirates Team New Zealand. But the Kiwis were to windward and literally took off, popping up onto their foils to open a 10-second lead at the first mark. Emirates Team New Zealand sailed lower and faster than Luna Rossa on the first run and stretched its 10-second lead to 23 seconds at the leeward gate. Lower and faster "is a real good combination when you're trying to win a sailboat race," said announcer Ken Read. (Sunday August 18)

Luna Rossa completed the 10.02 nautical mile course in 25:34 at an average speed of 26.96 knots." - The race committee postponed Race 3 of the Louis Vuitton Cup Final due to winds exceeding the prescribed limit. Louis Vuitton Cup Semifinal Race 4 video

LOUIS VUITTON CUP - SEMIFINAL - RACE 4 Luna Rossa sweeps semifinals 4-0 against Artemis and will face Emirates Team New Zealand in the finals beginning next Saturday, August 17th.

America's Cup: Luna Rossa sweeps Artemis - San Jose Mercury News: "Sweden's Artemis Racing ended its emotional journey to the America's Cup on Saturday, losing its last race after a valiant comeback to prove the team could compete after the heartbreaking loss of its beloved crew mate, the skipper's best friend. As the team crossed the finish line more than two minutes behind Italy's Luna Rossa, the crew waved to the thousands of spectators cheering a heartfelt tribute from shore. Then, with Andrew "Bart" Simpson's name emblazoned on their sails and on their sleeves, the sailors embraced. "I'm hugely proud of our team. It's been a terrible period," said Artemis skipper Iain Percy, who grew up sailing with Simpson . . . ."

America's Cup stirs controversy as it ventures into new waters - latimes.com: "Gone are the conventional monohulled yachts, replaced by sleek catamarans with rigid sails that look like a jet wing. These AC72s can reach unprecedented speeds, rising out of the water to skim along on hydrofoils. "They are insane boats to sail," says Chris Draper, the helmsman on an Italian boat vying for the title. "I cannot explain it … an amazing amount of fun.""

All aboard as women join Royal Yacht Squadron’s ranks - Telegraph: "The winds and tides of the Solent may change but not those of the RYS — until now. Last week, “the squadron”, as it is known, decided to admit women. The decision was taken during a meeting at the start of the Cowes regatta attended by 150 of the 475 members of the RYS and carried unanimously. The vote, however behind the times, is nevertheless symptomatic of the evolution of sailing from an elite pursuit into a democratic sport. Cowes, the spiritual home of British yachting, perched on the northern extremity of the Isle of Wight, is evolving with it."
