2014 Argo Group Gold Cup, Stage 6 Alpari World Match Racing Tour
Hamilton Harbour in Bermuda is the setting for the Argo Group Gold Cup. Racing in the classic International One Design 20 teams will battle it out to see who lift the coveted King Edward VII Gold Cup, the oldest Match Racing trophy contested in one-design boats. The 2013 champion, Francesco Bruni, returns to defend his crown but will face stiff opposition from the other 19 teams desperate to etch their name onto the trophy. OFFICIAL WEBSITE: www.wmrt.com

The World Match Racing Tour (WMRT) is the world's leading match racing series featuring World-Class Championship events across the globe. The series is sanctioned by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) with "Special Event" status. The World Match Racing Tour (WMRT) is currently sponsored by Alpari and thus officially known as the Alpari World Match Racing Tour (AWMRT). ALPARI World Match Racing Tour - News"Lelystad, Netherlands (23 Sept 2014): Twelve teams are about to start racing at the inaugural Dutch Match Cup, the latest addition to the Alpari World Match Racing Tour (AWMRT). With the contest due to begin on Wednesday, today the sailors are making the most of practice in the Maxfun25 keelboats in Lelystad, less than an hour’s drive from Amsterdam. None of the top seeds has raced these boats on these waters before, so it will be a fast learning curve as they get to grips with the specifics of the venue and the equipment. The seven Tour Card holders have only just flown in from the Chicago Match Cup which concluded on Sunday with a thrilling final between Taylor Canfield’s US One team and Ian Williams with GAC Pindar. Based on recent form, these two crews rank among the favourites in Lelystad, although there will be other teams that know they have to break Williams’ stranglehold on the top of the Tour leaderboard. Mathieu Richard and LunaJets have had a good season and sit in 2nd overall, albeit on 74 points, a full 20 points behind the British five-time World Champion. After four events this season, GAC Pindar has taken 94 points from a possible maximum of 100."

Charity Regatta Rallies as Alibaba Keeps Sailors at Work - Bloomberg: "Alibaba’s (BABA) initial public offering put a slight damper on the fourth annual New York Harbor Regatta. With just a couple of days’ notice, some of the bankers scheduled to sail on Sept. 19, the day of the IPO, pulled out of the races, which benefit programs at the maritime-driven New York Harbor School on Governors Island. “Because of Alibaba, we scattered to other boats,” said Strother Scott, an associate at H.I.G. Capital in Boston, who had planned to sail on a family boat... Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs, two of the underwriters of the Alibaba IPO, were the event’s lead sponsors, along with Two Harbors Investment Corp. (TWO) Deutsche Bank was also an underwriter of the IPO. The conditions on the water were not as favorable as those for Alibaba. The race started with a “nice northeasterly breeze, then the wind shifted 300 degrees,” said Julian Fisher, chairman of the race committee at the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club of Oyster Bay, New York, who presided...."

Sopot Match Race, Alpari World Match Racing Tour, Jul 31-Aug 3 (video)

Sopot Match Race, Alpari World Match Racing Tour, July 31-August 3 (promo video above)
Sopot is the most prestigeous sea resort in Poland located by the Baltic Sea, between Gdansk and Gdynia. 12 teams will be competing at the Sopot Match Race, Stage 3 of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour starting on 31 July and culminating in the final on 3 of August.

ALPARI World Match Racing Tour - Alpari World Match Racing Tour moves on to Poland: "Sopot, Poland (30th July 2014): One of the most exciting developments in the Alpari World Match Racing Tour for 2014 is the addition of Sopot Match Race into its roster of events.  This year will be the 11th edition of Sopot Match Race, taking place on the Baltic in the Polish holiday resort close to Gdansk. As a nation Poland is one of the most prolific internationally when it comes to match racing with the annual Polish Match Tour comprising five or six events annually. As a result, according to event organiser and competitor Przemek Tarnacki, his country also has more sailors in the top 100 of the ISAF match race rankings than any other. It is therefore fitting that Poland’s top event for the first time this year should form part of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour... Racing takes place over 4 days from Thursday 31st July until Sunday 3rd August and sunshine with a light to moderate sea breeze are to be expected. The format will see a full round of Qualifying, with the winner advancing to the Semi Finals, followed by a 6 team Quarter Final then Semi Final and Final."

In one of the most exciting finals in Argo Group Gold Cup history, Francesco Bruni (ITA) Luna Rossa put a stop to the comeback kid, Sir Ben Ainslie (GBR) BART/Argo Group. Bruni won the first two races and then Ainslie took two and looked like he was going to add a Gold Cup comeback to his America's Cup record. Bruini would have nothing of that and sailed flawlessly in the final race to win the King Edward VII Gold Cup and US$50,000 of the $100,000 prize purse . . ."

Sir Ben Ainslie and Francesco Bruni draw First Blood in Semis: "In the very light and shifty conditions, the Semi Finals were delayed after only one race in each match. Sir Ben Ainslie (GBR) BART/Argo Group defeated Adam Minoprio (NZL) Team Alpari FX in a runaway. Ainslie was masterful in picking his way through the shifts and taking the best of the puffs. The sole race between Argo Group Gold Cup defending champion Taylor Canfield (ISV) USone and Francesco Bruni (ITA) Luna Rossa went to Bruni by maybe a bow roller. In the three-lap puff hopper, the lead changed on wind shifts, penalties. Then with Canfield in the lead approaching the final windward mark on starboard, he had a windless mark rounding and a slower spinnaker set. . . ."
