Route du Rhum--Destination Guadeloupe, Louis Burton video

Louis Burton ( Bureau Vallée ), makes a nice performance on the Bureau Valley built in 2006. Making his way to the East, unlike the main body IMOCA party to the West, Malouin adoption was able to take the full potential of his boat while preserving the rough conditions of the early days of racing. Happy to be at sea, Louis never hide his pleasure, even in difficult times during this Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe. Official site -- see also: #RDR2014

Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe: "11/17 - 18h03 The Scent of a Victory - Spanish skipper Alex Pella is closing the miles to the finish of La Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe with the prospect of victory in the hotly contested Classe 40 division growing with each hour. He is expected in Pointe a Pitre, Gaudeloupe during the night of Tuesday into Wednesday, from around 2200hrs local time (0200hrs Wed TU/0300hrs CET). He would become the first solo Spanish skipper to win in the ten editions of the Route du Rhum, and at the same time would become the first Spanish sailor to triumph in a major solo ocean race. The 40ft class is one of the most international in the four-yearly race, Briton Phil Sharp winning in 18 days in 2006. France's Thomas Ruyant was quicker when he won in 2010 in 17days 23hrs 10m but Pella should be around 16 and a half days..."

The World Match Racing Tour (WMRT) is the world's leading match racing series featuring World-Class Championship events across the globe. The series is sanctioned by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) with "Special Event" status. The World Match Racing Tour (WMRT) is currently sponsored by Alpari and thus officially known as the Alpari World Match Racing Tour (AWMRT). In the world of sailing it is now widely referred to as the Alpari World Match Racing Tour (AWMRT). More info: wmrt.com

ALPARI World Match Racing Tour - News"Lelystad, Netherlands (23 Sept 2014): Twelve teams are about to start racing at the inaugural Dutch Match Cup, the latest addition to the Alpari World Match Racing Tour (AWMRT). With the contest due to begin on Wednesday, today the sailors are making the most of practice in the Maxfun25 keelboats in Lelystad, less than an hour’s drive from Amsterdam. None of the top seeds has raced these boats on these waters before, so it will be a fast learning curve as they get to grips with the specifics of the venue and the equipment. The seven Tour Card holders have only just flown in from the Chicago Match Cup which concluded on Sunday with a thrilling final between Taylor Canfield’s US One team and Ian Williams with GAC Pindar. Based on recent form, these two crews rank among the favourites in Lelystad, although there will be other teams that know they have to break Williams’ stranglehold on the top of the Tour leaderboard. Mathieu Richard and LunaJets have had a good season and sit in 2nd overall, albeit on 74 points, a full 20 points behind the British five-time World Champion. After four events this season, GAC Pindar has taken 94 points from a possible maximum of 100."

Charity Regatta Rallies as Alibaba Keeps Sailors at Work - Bloomberg: "Alibaba’s (BABA) initial public offering put a slight damper on the fourth annual New York Harbor Regatta. With just a couple of days’ notice, some of the bankers scheduled to sail on Sept. 19, the day of the IPO, pulled out of the races, which benefit programs at the maritime-driven New York Harbor School on Governors Island. “Because of Alibaba, we scattered to other boats,” said Strother Scott, an associate at H.I.G. Capital in Boston, who had planned to sail on a family boat... Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs, two of the underwriters of the Alibaba IPO, were the event’s lead sponsors, along with Two Harbors Investment Corp. (TWO) Deutsche Bank was also an underwriter of the IPO. The conditions on the water were not as favorable as those for Alibaba. The race started with a “nice northeasterly breeze, then the wind shifted 300 degrees,” said Julian Fisher, chairman of the race committee at the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club of Oyster Bay, New York, who presided...."

Small breeze & big tactics takes The Wave, Muscat into pole position ahead of final Cardiff showdown » Extreme Sailing Series:What a difference a day makes. If Saturday’s Extreme 40 racing on Cardiff Bay was all about power, Sunday was about tactics and finesse, with light breeze dancing across the bay, at Act 5 of the Extreme Sailing Series™ presented by Land Rover. Just five points scoring races were added to the tally – but five all important leaderboard changing races - with the pressure piling on the teams to lay down a strong performance ahead of Monday's final day. One team with huge pressure on their shoulders in Cardiff is The Wave, Muscat, who need an Act win here to keep in touch with the top of the overall Series leaderboard and skipper Leigh McMillan more than rose to the challenge, adding 33 points to their score to overhaul Alinghi, and lead the pack for the first time, heading into today's racing.

Volvo Ocean Race, A Test Of Sailing Endurance (video)

Just another day at the office | Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 | video above

Volvo Ocean Race: A $20 Million Test Of Sailing Endurance: " .... On October 11, the fleet of identical 65-foot ocean racers will set off from Alicante, Spain on the first leg of the 40,000-mile race, which has been held every three years since 1973. For Enright and his young crew, it’s a chance to prove themselves in one of the toughest endurance contests in sailing... The boats will race from Alicante to Cape Town and from there to Abu Dhabi; Sanya, China; Aukland, New Zealand and around Cape Horn to Brazil and Newport before finishing in Gothenburg, Sweden. The race is expected to take 10 months and will cost the average team about $20 million, including the cost of shore crews who will move a pair of shipping containers full of supplies in leapfrog fashion in front of the boats... To drive down costs from previous years, the 65-foot, carbon-fiber boats are all the same... Volvo 65s have canting keels, hinged arms with a lead bulb that can be swung 40 degrees from side to side to provide more stability at the cost of a complex system of hydraulic rams to move the keel. After years of tinkering, the hydraulic rams and swing joints appear to be durable enough to survive a circumnavigation of the globe...."

Video of Tornado flipping Clipper Round the World yacht

Video: Dramatic moment tornado flips Clipper Round the World yacht on its side - Telegraph: "A sailing crew has described how its yacht flipped on its side as a tornado passed over it during the Clipper Round the World race. Dramatic footage has emerged of the moment the water spout hits the Great Britain team as they sailed from Brisbane to Singapore. A camera fixed to the mast filmed the boat as it was tipped 120 degrees by winds of more than 100mph until the mast lay parallel to the water. Squally conditions meant the crew was unable to see the water spout approaching and some were thrown into the water on their tethers while others scrabbled to hang onto the boat. The vessel righted itself within seconds once the tornado had passed....."
