Suhaili, Restoring a Legend, Golden Globe Race 2018, Sailing Videos

Suhaili - Restoring a Legend - Golden Globe Race 2018 - Suhaili and Sir Robin Knox Johnston are both living treasures in the sailing world. The first to sail solo non-stop around the world winning the 1968 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race. Both are preparing for the 50th Anniversary of that great adventure, to ceremonially cross the start line of the 2018 Golden Globe Race on 14th June 2018. (Published on Apr 21, 2015)

Hello Golden Globe - six weeks after the launch of the 2018 Golden Globe Race 50 sailors from 17 countries have expressed their intention to enter. From divers backgrounds with various reasons for entering, the race is now building to be a grand adventure. Six potential entrants introduce themselves in this video for the first time. (Published on Jun 10, 2015)

Hello Golden Globe, Part 2 - The 2018 Golden Globe Race received 25 paid up provisional Entries in the first nine weeks. The entry list is now full and a Wait List for up to 15 sailors is now open. Meet some of the entrants! Five special invitations are yet to be allocated bringing the final fleet to 30 sailors. Published on Sep 10, 2015 More info: goldengloberace.com and Golden Globe Race 2018McIntyre Adventure

Background:
"The Sunday Times Golden Globe Race was a non-stop, single-handed, round-the-world yacht race, held in 1968–1969, and was the first round-the-world yacht race. The race was controversial due to the failure by most competitors to finish the race and because of the suicide of one entrant; however, it ultimately led to the founding of the BOC Challenge and Vendée Globe round-the-world races, both of which continue to be successful and popular.

"The Golden Globe trophy was offered to the first person to complete an unassisted, non-stop single-handed circumnavigation of the world via the great capes, and a separate £5,000 prize was offered for the fastest single-handed circumnavigation. Nine sailors started the race; four retired before leaving the Atlantic Ocean. Of the five remaining, Chay Blyth, who had set off with absolutely no sailing experience, sailed past the Cape of Good Hope before retiring; Nigel Tetley sank with 1,100 nautical miles (2,000 km) to go while leading; Donald Crowhurst, who, in desperation, attempted to fake a round-the-world voyage to avoid financial ruin, began to show signs of mental illness, and then committed suicide; and Bernard Moitessier, who rejected the philosophy behind a commercialised competition, abandoned the race while in a strong position to win and kept sailing non-stop until he reached Tahiti after circling the globe one and a half times. Robin Knox-Johnston was the only entrant to complete the race, becoming the first person to sail single-handed and non-stop around the world. He was awarded both prizes, and later donated the £5,000 to a fund supporting Crowhurst's family." (Wikipedia)

Coast Guard suspends search for missing Olympic sailor in Miami: "Search efforts for a missing Olympic sailor, Trevor Moore, in Biscayne Bay, Florida, were suspended Saturday evening at sunset. The Coast Guard and partner agencies covered more than 510 square nautical miles and completed more than 29 search patterns before suspending the three day search. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones affected," said Capt. Michael Long, Coast Guard Sector Miami deputy commander. "Despite the tireless search efforts by multiple agencies and good Samaritans, we were unable to find Mr. Moore." On Thursday, Moore, a member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic sailing team, was reported missing when security personnel at Dinner Key Marina, Miami, found his unmanned 16-foot boat at the marina just before 6 p.m.  The boat's engine was running and Moore's personal belongs were found onboard. The Coast Guard diverted an MH-65 rescue helicopter crew based out of Miami and launched a rescue boat crew from Station Miami Beach to search for the missing sailor.  Additional boat crews from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, City of Miami Police Department, the National Park service and good Samaritans joined in the three day search along with a helicopter crew from Miami Dade County Fire Rescue. FWC is leading the investigation into the incident." (source: US Coast Guard)
