Video above published Feb 17, 2017: Four-time Volvo Ocean Race veteran and two-time Olympic medallist Xabi Fernández has been announced as MAPFRE skipper for the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18 edition.

The Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18 will begin on Sunday, October 22, 2017, in Alicante, Spain, when the teams start 45,000 nautical miles of offshore racing over a course that takes in 11 landmark cities in five continents over eight months. Formerly known as the Whitbread Round the World Race when started in 1973, the Volvo Ocean Race is held every three years.

United States Sailing Association | Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games Update: The following is a statement from US Sailing, the national governing body for sailing, on the recent update from the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) regarding the decision by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to not include sailing at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. - “We are highly disappointed to hear that the IPC has confirmed their decision not to include sailing at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. We believe that sailing is one of the best sports available to disabled athletes worldwide, and we will continue to champion its future inclusion in the Games, assisting ISAF on future reinstatement efforts—for Tokyo 2020 (should the opportunity arise), 2024 and beyond. The sailors who have competed for the United States in the Paralympics, eleven of whom returned with hard-won medals, are heroes in our sport. US Sailing will work hard to ensure that others will have the opportunity to join their ranks in the future. We encourage all disabled sailing organizations worldwide to continue their mission. 2015 St Barths Bucket Regatta: Bucket Blog: "Owners and their guests got the red carpet treatment last night at a special "Eden Rock" gathering. Yes, an actual red carpet led directly to the beach where all that was glittering included the sand and palm trees, illuminated in a rainbow of colors. One owner declared the event, set on a rocky point overlooking St. Jean Bay, perfect in flow and excellent in ambience, as it was easy to find friends and communicate while enjoying a phenomenal sushi bar, stone-oven pizza, sliders, and of course fine champagne and Prosecco. "The hosts went to the top; it was five-star elegant but understated," he said. Representatives from each of the four Bucket stewards – Perini Navi, Royal Huisman, Vitters Shipyard and Rybovich – greeted guests as they entered, and Russell Coutts made an intriguing presentation on why everyone attending should make it to Bermuda for the next America's Cup....."

    Sailing: Iceberg 'road block' forces Ocean Race route change | Reuters: "After finally setting off for the 6,776-nautical mile stage on Wednesday, a huge iceberg was spotted within 48 hours via satellite pictures. Organizers have imposed ice limits that will force the boats to sail clear of the iceberg's path. Crews will be penalized if they sail over these boundaries towards hazardous areas. Organizers have brought forward the likely arrival time in Itajai from April 7 to 4 after the boats made surprisingly rapid progress through the first 1,000 nautical miles of the stage."

    Be careful what you wish for | Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015: "...“I’d be lying if I said our enthusiasm for getting out here is unchanged,” politely confessed Amory Ross in his daily blog from Team Alvimedica. Translation: the sea state has been a mess and in up to 30 knots of wind, most of his mates are getting seasick. “Now that we’re actually here everyone’s either green or exhausted, and often both. We talk a lot about racing these boats, the demands and the skills it requires, but when the conditions are like they are now simply living takes considerable effort, too.”..."
