Victory in Lorient! - Volvo Ocean Race, Leg 8 finish in Lorient, France - published 11 Jun 2015: The culmination of over two years of hard work came together today for Team SCA, as they crossed the finish line after 3 days 13 hours 11 minutes and 11 seconds to take their first leg win in Lorient.

Celebration in magenta | Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015: Skipper Sam Davies and her Team SCA crew struck a resounding blow for women’s offshore sailing in the early hours of Thursday morning when they gloriously clinched Leg 8 of the Volvo Ocean Race. The comfortable victory was the first leg win by a female crew in offshore sailing’s toughest challenge since Tracy Edwards’ Maiden clinched two stage wins in Class D of the 1989-90 race, won overall by Sir Peter Blake’s famous Steinlager 2. Behind them, another fairy-tale was unfolding as Team Vestas Wind closed to a second-place finish in their return to the race after six months out following a collision with an Indian Ocean reef on November 29 during Leg 2. Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing (Ian Walker/GBR) all but clinched the 12th edition of offshore sailing’s toughest challenge in the early hours of Thursday in Lorient, when a third place in Leg 8 left them with an eight-point lead in the Volvo Ocean Race with one stage to go. (source: volvooceanrace.com)

Volvo Ocean Race, Leg 8 finish order: Team SCA first, Team Vestas Wind second, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing third, MAPFRE fourth, Team Brunel fifth, Team Alvimedica sixth, Dongfeng Race Team seventh.

Volvo Ocean Race schedule:
In-Port Race: Sunday, June 14, 2015
Leg 9 start: Tuesday, June 16, 2015

It's magenta! | Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15
Hours before crossing the finish line to win Leg 8 of the Volvo Ocean Race, Team SCA's shore team isn't about to count their chickens before they hatch, but that isn't keeping the butterflies out of their stomachs as the all-female team leads the fleet to Lorient with a 10nm lead.

Man lost at sea for 66 days a 'pretty remarkable' textbook case for survival | US news | The Guardian: "... Jon Ehm, business development manager at survival education company Survival Systems USA, said that Jordan’s claims are realistic. “It proves that given a strong will to live and a little bit of ingenuity, a person can do quite well, with very little in the way of resource,” Ehm said. “Well – surviving 66 days with no food or water and making do – he wasn’t thriving, but definitely surviving.” Ehm said that several factors worked in Jordan’s favor, for instance having remained on a boat instead of a life raft and his experience as a professional fisherman, which meant he had the skills to acquire food. Most important, Ehm said, is that Jordan had access to water, because hydration is the priority in a survival situation..."

Leg 2 Final Stint | Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 -
This is it! The Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15, Leg 2 is coming to an end. With just a few hours to go it seems like a three-way battle for first between Team Brunel, Dongfeng Race Team and Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing.

Dongfeng Race Team gives us a peek into the very tight (and very light) battle to Abu Dhabi.

A Twenty-first-Century Shipwreck - New Yorker: Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15
"... At the end of November, ten days into the race’s second leg—a three-and-a-half-week-long sail from Cape Town, South Africa, to Abu Dhabi—Team Vestas Wind, sponsored by a Danish wind-energy company, was in fifth place among the seven-boat fleet. The six-million-dollar, sixty-five-foot sloop was skippered by Chris Nicholson, a forty-five-year-old Australian with four Volvo races under his belt. It was moving nineteen knots shortly after sunset (7:10P.M. local time) on November 29th when it slammed into a coral reef, part of an archipelago named St. Brandon, two hundred and sixty-eight miles off the coast of Mauritius...."

Team New Zealand pull out of Extreme series | Stuff.co.nz: "Team New Zealand have pulled out of the final and decisive regatta in the Extreme Sailing Series in Sydney to concentrate all their resources on their America's Cup challenge. Emirates Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton said the decision was made once Bermuda was confirmed to host the next America's Cup final in 2017. That long-awaited decision had given the team the impetus to press on with funding and design plans with some certainty. The team are also exploring hosting the main buildup challengers' series in Auckland in early 2017 – the equivalent of the old Louis Vuitton Cup...."

Volvo Ocean Race: Dec 9, 2014 --There's no doubt, it's a three horse race to Abu Dhabi.

Distance is relative | Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015: "... The Dutch boat [Team Brunel] is seriously heeling: the leaders are enjoying a good northeasterly breeze and Dongfeng are seven miles behind. But they know it may not last. “We’re going to have less wind and we’re going to hit it first,” adds Gerd-Jan. He opens his hands. “Basically, this is 15 miles. When we’ll arrive in the channel, the others will get closer because they’ll keep the wind longer and we’ll go slower.”..."

The homestretch to the end of Leg 2 is getting closer. And the word "home" takes a special meaning for the Emirati sailor Adil on Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. Dec 10, 2014
