44Cup Palma, Nov 13 - 17, Palma de Majorca, Spain (video)

Day 4 - 44Cup Palma 2019 - Far Behind Victory Decides 2019 44Cup

Nov 17, 2019, Day 4 (final day of racing): It was supposed to be a heavyweight bout between Chris Bake’s Team Aqua and Vladimir Prosikhin’s Team Nika. These two, among the oldest, most successful teams in the high performance one design monohull class, started the 44Cup Palma, the final event of the season, separated by just one point at the top of the 2019 44Cup leaderboard. Behind them Igor Lah’s Team CEEREF went into the 44Cup Palma five points off the lead with Aleph Racing of Hugues Lepic a further point behind.

However this non-discardable final event of the season was to prove surprisingly dire for both the leaders who, against all expectation, began today’s final day of racing in last place. Meanwhile, two other teams were excelling – Nico Poons’ Charisma, the 2018 defending 44Cup champion, and Igor Lah’s Team CEEREF, winner in 2016-17, who prevailed once again.

Official results & rankings.

Day 3: 44Cup Palma 2019 - CEEREF Could Turn 44cup On Its Head

Nov 16: If Charisma and Aleph were the stand-out teams yesterday, today, the penultimate day of the 44Cup Palma, belonged to Igor Lah's Team CEEREF. In a return to their 2016-17 season-winning form, the Slovenian team won both of today's races. This elevated them to second overall astern of Nico Poons' Charisma which had another solid day leaving them with a six point lead going into the final day.

Day 2 44Cup Palma - Two Bullet Day for Charisma, but Aleph Leads

44Cup Nov 15, 2019: Yesterday racing was canned with the breeze gusting to 40 knots. Today, despite a large residual swell, conditions appeared more sailable, but for almost two hours the wind failed to settle, its direction pulled around due to the giant clouds crossing the Bay of Palma race area. Although light to moderate, the wind randomly shifted between southwest and northwest and back before finally settling close to the former when, on their fifth attempt, the race committee was able to lay a course successfully.

DAY 1 44Cup

Nov 14, 2019: Winds gusting up to 40 knots and a heinous seastate out on the Bay of Palma, kept the 44Cup fleet at the dock on the opening day of the 44Cup Palma. The wind began veering and dropping mid-afternoon but the left-over sea state precluded the deciding round of the 2019 44Cup from getting underway.

“We had a steady 23-25 knots of wind, but the sea states was such, coming from various directions, that it was basically like a cauldron,” reported PRO Peter Reggio. “That combined with the velocity being at the upper end means it wouldn’t have been good racing at all. Fortunately the forecast for the next few days is looking better than it did this morning."

44Cup Palma, Nov 13 - 17, Real Club Náutico de Palma, Palma de Majorca, Spain. The grand final is in Palma, Majorca, the fifth and final event of the 2019 season. Expect to see a a heated fight for the podium between the top three teams. Chris Bake’s Team Aqua currently leads the fleet, after the World Championship win in Marstrand Sweden during the summer which they followed up with a win in Cascais, Portugal last month. Having been at each other’s throats for the entire season Team Aqua’s biggest threat is Vladimir Prosikhin’s Team Nika with three second place event finishes this season and desperate to take an event win.

GC32 | 38th Copa del Rey MAPFRE, Mallorca, Spain, Jul 31-Aug 3

GC32 Day 4 Copa del Rey MAPFRE - Oman Air match races to victory in Palma

Aug 3, 2019: Oman Air have won the 38 Copa del Rey MAPFRE, third event of the 2019 GC32 Racing Tour, after fending off a final day challenge from arch-rival Alinghi. After being soundly beaten by Ernesto Bertarelli’s Swiss team at the GC32 World Championship in June, this was a sweet return to form for Adam Minoprio and his crew. Next GC32 Racing Tour event at Lake Garda for the Riva Cup, 11-15 September 2019.

GC32 Day 3 Copa del Rey MAPFRE

Aug 2, 2019--Crossed swords between Oman and Switzerland--Some hair-raisingly close crosses between Oman Air and Alinghi summed up just how tight the battle for supremacy is between these two top-flight teams duelling each other at the 38 Copa del Rey MAPFRE, third event of the 2019 GC32 Racing Tour. Adam Minoprio might have again steered the Omani boat to three victories from five heats today, but Arnaud Psarofaghis notched up a cleaner set of results to close in on their rivals by a single point on the leaderboard.

GC32 Day 2 Copa del Rey MAPFRE

Aug 1, 2019--Oman Air flies past Alinghi in light airs of Palma--Adam Minoprio and his crew nailed some excellent reaching starts in the stronger winds of the first three races to score a hat trick of bullets in Palma.

How to build a Volvo Ocean 65 | Volvo Ocean Race

Video above published Jul 19, 2017: A process taking over 36,000 man hours, follow the construction of a One Design Volvo Ocean 65 racing machine from start to sailing. Team AkzoNobel will race this boat in the 2017-18 edition.

Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18 begins October 22, 2017, in Alicante, Spain.

The 2017-18 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race introduces a new scoring system designed to encourage strategic risk-taking and open up the fleet in an era of ultra-close One Design racing:
  • Scoring will return to a high-points system.
  • The two Southern Ocean legs – from Cape Town to Hong Kong, and Auckland to Itajaí, plus the North Atlantic leg near the end of the race, Newport to Cardiff – will all score double points.
  • The winner of every leg will score one bonus point (9+1 bonus point for a win, 8 for second, 7 for third, etc).
  • There will be a bonus point for the first team to round Cape Horn in a nod to the historic significance of this turning point in the race.
  • A further bonus point will be awarded for the team with the best total elapsed time overall in the race.
  • The In-Port Series won’t count in the overall points but will remain the tiebreaker should teams be tied on points at the finish in The Hague.

Day 4 RC44 Sotogrande Cup - Chris Bake grabs victory from jaws of defeat

Video above published Apr 30, 2017: After two severe days, Sotogrande and the Andalusian coastline laid on perfect conditions for the final day of competition at the RC44 Sotogrande Cup. Mountainous seas gave way to a short chop, torrential rain gave way to brilliant sunshine and a stiff but shifty 20 knot, westerly offshore wind, to provide the tacticians with some welcome head scratching. Despite this idyllic scenario for the crews and a tight leaderboard to resolve, today was formidably taxing for PRO Peter Reggio and team as the wind repeatedly shifted causing numerous general recalls. It also proved treacherous for the crews with numerous 'hero to zero' moments across the fleet. None was worse than that of Team Aqua. Having increased their lead to five points after the first race, Team Aqua were on track to consolidate their position in the second race until they caught a decent sized wave that buried the bow breaking the bowsprit. The crew rallied to fit a replacement just before the shut-off for the final race of the day. In this, amazingly, the three frontrunners were last to the weather mark. At the second weather mark rounding Team Aqua had recovered fourth place, which they hung on to the finish. winning them the RC44 Sotogrande Cup title while Peninsula Petroleum, which came home last, took second overall. Kirill Frolov, joint helmsman on Bronenosec Sailing Team rounded-up the Sotogrande Cup podium in third, a fine result considering it was their first regatta with an almost entirely new crew.

Day 3 RC44 Sotogrande Cup - Team Aqua takes control of RC44 Sotogrande Cup

Video above published Apr 29, 2017: Once again the wind was not the issue today but an initially massive sea state that had the nimble RC44s disappearing in the troughs up to their spreaders. To make matters harder the wind and the wave train weren't aligned with boats sailing along the giant waves on starboard tack and crashing directly into them on port. And then there was the torrential rain that made the decks extremely slippery and helped cause two man overboard incidents – both crew successfully recovered.

The day had three different winners with Russian Alexander Novoselov's Katusha for a second time winning the opening race of the day, while John Bassadone and his team of local heroes on board Peninsula Petroleum claimed race two and Bronenosec took today's third and final, marking a first ever race win in the RC44 for new co-helmsman Kirill Frolov, despite this only being his second day of racing in the class.

Day 2 RC44 Sotogrande Cup - Rain does not stay on the plain - Rain of Old Testament magnitude descended on Spain's Costa del Sol for day two of the RC44 Sotogrande Cup. While the wind was not excessive, the sea state decidedly was.

Day 1 RC44 Sotogrande Cup--Snakes and ladders on opening day of 2017 tour

Apr 27, 2017: The opening day of the RC44 season and the RC44 Sotogrande Cup proved extremely trying for PRO Peter Reggio and his race management team as they valiantly strove to keep the course orientated to the wind, an operation that required course changes on nearly every leg of all today's four races.

With the heavy guns out in the RC44 fleet, today's four races had four different winners with giant victories especially for Alexander Novoselov's Katusha in race one and the local heroes on John Bassadone's Gibraltar based team Peninsula Petroleum in race four. Team Nika ends the opening day two points clear of Chris Bake's Team Aqua in turn three points ahead of Bronenosec Sailing Team. The light blue RC44 was widely considered star performer today as all but three of her crew, including the helmsman are new to the fleet.
