Route du Rhum Report: Alex Thomson's IMOCA 60 Crash Finish

Route du Rhum: Alex Thompson's IMOCA 60 Crash Finish

IMOCA 60 leader Briton Alex Thomson got to within 10 miles of Guadeloupe island and went to sleep. His electric probe wake-up watch either didn't fire or he slept through it so he woke up, in a flash, when he hit the rocks. To save his multi-million Euro yacht he started the moter, got off the bricks without too much damage and finished the race.On passing the line the Jury boarded his boat, interviewed him and as a result of starting the motor, they penalized him 24 hours on his elapsed time, which resulted in Thomson finishing 3rd in the IMOCA class. He admitted his mistake widely. An unfortunate incident in his sailing career.--World on Water video above published Nov 17, 2018.

Vendee Globe Update: In the Vendee Globe 2016-17 solo non-stop round-the-world sailing race, Armel Le Cleac'h on BANQUE POPULAIRE VIII (1st) and Alex Thomson on HUGO BOSS (2nd) are currently leading the fleet headed east across the Pacific Ocean towards Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America.

LIVE Tracking: tracking2016.vendeeglobe.org

At 1530hrs UTC, 20 Dec 2016, Thomas Ruyant on his critically damaged IMOCA Le Souffle du Nord with the two specialists on board and the pump working, was 25 miles – or about four hours – from the haven of Bluff, the southernmost town on South Island, New Zealand. The bow section of his IMOCA flooded and the stern clear of the water, the boat pitching out of control, Ruyant had spent many uncertain hours fighting to bring his boat to safety, often losing steerage in big seas and buffeting winds which gusted to over 55 knots. 2016 Vendée Globe route
2016 Vendée Globe route
The Vendée Globe involves sailing around the world alone, without stopping and without assistance, setting sail from and finishing in Les Sables d’Olonne, after rounding the three legendary capes: The Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, Cape Leeuwin in Southern Australia and the infamous Cape Horn at the tip of South America. Sailing twice in the North and South Atlantic – on the way down and on the way back – and sailing around Antarctica by crossing the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Like many other major international sporting events (the Olympics, World Cup, etc) it has been organised every four years since 1989. This event combines human endeavour and technology, and is raced on 60-foot monohulls (18.28 m), IMOCA boats. The Vendée Globe race record is held by François Gabart, who finished after 78 days. The eighth Vendée Globe will begin from Les Sables d’Olonne on Sunday 6th November 2016. More info: vendeeglobe.org

Lost at sea: the man who vanished for 14 months | World news | The Guardian: "... Alvarenga remained sitting, gripping the tiller tightly, determined to navigate a storm now so strong that harbourmasters along the coast had barred fishing boats from heading out to sea. Finally he noticed a change in the visibility, the cloud cover was lifting: he could see miles across the water. Around 9am, Alvarenga spotted the rise of a mountain on the horizon. They were approximately two hours from land when the motor started coughing and spluttering. He pulled out his radio and called his boss. “Willy! Willy! Willy! The motor is ruined!” “Calm down, man, give me your coordinates,” Willy responded, from the beachside docks in Costa Azul. “We have no GPS, it’s not functioning.” “Lay an anchor,” Willy ordered. A Surprise before Saturday? | Transat Jacques Vabre 2015 : Le Havre - Itajai | October 2015 | Take to the seas and act for the planet: "The early morning (CET) Saturday should see the first Ultime break the finish line off Itajaí, Brasil to take overall line honours in this 12th edition of the Transat Jacques Vabre. With just under 800 miles of racing left the last 24 hours have seen Thomas Coville and Jean Luc Nélias come right back into race leaders Francois Gabart and Pascal Bidégorry, reducing their deficit from a maximum figure of over 250 miles to a margin of 120 miles this Thursday afternoon.  Second placed Coville and Nélias were on the wrong end of a rich get richer scenario during Tuesday and Wednesday, the leaders on MACIF were scything south into strengthening and lifting breeze. But today the tables turn slightly as the trade winds give way to one final unpredictable, stormy low pressure system which stands between them and Itajaí. MACIF were gaining again this afternoon, going slightly quicker, but victory is far from assured for Gabart and Bidégorry ..." read more at link above

HUGO BOSS completes the 180 righting test (video above)

British sailor Alex Thomson and his co-skipper Guillermo Altadill are looking towards the 2016 Vendee Globe after an extraordinary sequence of events ended their participation in the Transat Jacques Vabre this weekend. The pair were rescued by the Spanish coastguard on Saturday afternoon after a rogue wave caught the used HUGO BOSS while the yacht was in a hove to position. The boat, which sustained damage to its rig in addition to taking on water while inverted, was later successfully brought to the dock in A Coruna, Spain, after a swift response from the Alex Thomson Racing Team. The weather conditions in the first few days saw wind speeds in excess of 50 knots (75 km/h) and waves up to 10 metres high. Alex and Guillermo made the decision to take the safest route, passing the weather system to the south. Whilst travelling south west the yacht incurred some structural damage and the skippers took the decision to head for A Coruna, Spain 120 miles away. The yacht was hove to, whilst Alex and Guillermo waited for the next weather window allowing them to proceed to port. Unexpectedly a rogue wave caught the racing yacht causing the yacht to turn upside down. Alex and Guillermo managed to close the hatches and secure the situation whilst inverted. Alex immediately hit the keel button, bringing the yacht back upright. They then alerted the rescue services and technical team of an emergency situation. The yacht had taken onboard a substantial amount of water and the rig had sustained damage requiring the skippers to leave the yacht. Alex Thomson explains “I have never experienced anything like it. I was asleep and woke up to a boat upside down rapidly filling with water. Guillermo and I responded together as a team to the difficult situation and now that my boat’s back safely we can focus on our Vendee Globe campaign as a team. We have overcome problems before and I am as determined as ever to succeed.” Always at the forefront of innovation, the team are pushing the boundaries with an advanced used boat design and know that race conditions provide the ultimate test. Alex and Guillermo were aiming for a podium finish in the Transat Jacques Vabre, and remain determined to succeed in the Vendee Globe. They will now focus their energy on further improving the yacht and honing its competitive edge. (press release)

Transat Jacques Vabre update: Twenty five miles of lateral separation, five miles on the NE-SW axis, that is the footprint that the top three IMOCAs share as they sail through a Doldrums passage which is so far proving much more generous than the Transat Jacques Vabre leaders, the Ultimes, experienced... read more here.

IMOCA Banque Populaire - Transat Jacques Vabre - Erwan Tabarly shares the IMOCA Monohull Banque Populaire VIII with Armel Le Cléac'h

The IMOCA 60 are a type of monohull sailing yachts administated by the International Monohull Open Class Association (IMOCA). The monohulls are high-performance racing boats, designed principally for single-handed competition. Several high-profile yacht races are based around these boats, such as the VELUX 5 Oceans Race, the Vendée Globe and the Barcelona World Race (circum-navigations), the Calais Round Britain Race (crewed race around British islands), and the Route du Rhum, the Transat Jacques Vabre, the Quebec-St Malo the Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Race, and the Europa Race. The IMOCA class is "open", meaning that it does not represent fixed boat designs; instead, they are defined by a "box rule" which permits any design, as long as it meets certain restrictions. The restrictions limit the lengths of the boats and place certain safety requirements on the boats, such as minimum stability requirements. This class is recognised by the International Sailing Federation. (Wikipedia)

Vincent Riou, PRB skipper IMOCA: " "Like every day, it's war. The boat is making 20kts and we have to be on it all the time... The worst is behind us now. We have two days on starboard, some sail changes to manage. I start looking to the Azores, which side to pass – windward or leeward – what is clear is that we will pass close to the islands. It is going well on PRB, for the moment, we’ll keep it up!”

Charlie Dalin, co-skipper of Queguiner - Leukemia Espoir (IMOCA): "To move around the boat on deck you are soaked. There was a lot of wind, between 30 and 40 knots. We are very happy with our position, everything is fine on board... "

Tanguy de Lamotte, skipper Initiatives Heart (IMOCA):"It is going well. Let’s say it's pretty invigorating sailing conditions. You are jumping waves when you are over 20kts..."

Getting into the groove...Guillermo Altadill speaks this morning | Transat Jacques Vabre 2015: "Gullermo Altadill, ESP, Hugo Boss IMOCA: “The night was OK. Last night we got gusts to 40kt but we managed to work with the sail changes to look after the boat, so we sailed to more west to get closer to the fleet. We are going upwind now and waiting for the next front for the shift to get on to starboard again and get reaching."
