44Cup Cascais Oct 3 - 6, Cascais, Lisbon District, Portugal

Team Aqua won the 44Cup Cascais with a race to spare:

Day 4 44CUP Cascais - Oct 6, 2019: Whether it was in big waves or small, gale force or sub-10 winds, Chris Bake’s Team Aqua shone all week and as a result, won the 44Cup Cascais with a race to spare. Although this was common occurrence for Team Aqua during her glory years of 2011-13, winning with a race to spare is very rare these days, such is the level of competition in the high performance one design monohull class.  The final day of 44Cup racing off the Portuguese sailing mecca, where the event was hosted by the Clube Naval de Cascais, provided even brisker conditions than the day before, mainly due to the race committee setting up the start area further offshore, free from the protection of the headlands west of Cascais. As a result, with the wind regularly blowing 20+ knots, and a lumpy and at times random chop set up on top of the Atlantic swell, it was a perpetually wet ride for the crews on this high load, high stress deciding day.

Day 3 44Cup Cascais 2019 - Russian bears wake up

While at the 44Cup Cascais there has been a light first day, a medium second day with a large swell, on day three the Portugese sailing mecca saw winds exceeding the forecast, gusting up to 25 knots, with a short wind-driven chop and a reduced swell.

The wind hovering around 18-20 knots for most of the day provided hair-raising downwinds with the crew hanging on as the RC44s accelerated to 20+ knots speed, engulfed in spray. The conditions placed a premium on crew work and it was easy even for the most polished teams to come unstuck - notably three time World Champion Team Nika which broached dramatically during today’s first kite hoist.

Day 2 44Cup Cascais 2019 - Team Aqua shows ‘golden wheels’ form

Oct 4, 2019: Half way stage the 44Cup Cascais, Chris Bake’s Team Aqua has joined Nico Poons’ Charisma at the top of the leaderboard and is even ahead on countback. The second day of racing for the high performance one design RC44 monohulls, hosted by the Clube Naval de Cascais, was held in slightly more wind than yesterday, 10-16 knots, building slowly in the final race, but remaining more firmly northwest. However the height of the swell was notably larger, drummed up by Hurricane Lorenzo. Thanks to the long wavelength this wasn’t especially dramatic, but it made holding a course tricky as boats experiencing a momentary lull and they disappeared in the troughs.

Day 1 Highlights, 44Cup Cascais 2019 - Charisma and Team Aqua stride ahead

In contrast to their tail end of the fleet finish in Marstrand in July, Nico Poons and Charisma showed the way around the race track on the opening day of the 44Cup Cascais, posting a most respectable 2-1-2. While today Charisma, the 2018 44Cup champion (and winner the last time the high performance 44ft long one design long monohulls visited these waters last November), seemed to be the stand-out team, in fact they finished the day just one point ahead of Team Aqua. Chris Bake’s team, which currently holds the 44Cup’s ‘golden wheels’ as overall 44Cup leader, claimed today’s final race and had nearly as consistently good a day as Charisma, posting a 3-2-1.

44Cup Cascais Oct 3 - 6, Clube Naval de Cascais, Cascais, Lisbon District, Portugal: the penultimate event of the 2019 RC44 season, the 44Cup Cascais, 3rd - 6th October, as the year draws to a close for the nine strong fleet of high performance one design keelboats, with only four points separating the top six teams.
Venue: located on the mouth of the River Tagus leading up to Lisbon, Cascais is open to the Atlantic and comes with all the potential for big winds and large oceanic swell. It is for this reason, combined with excellent hospitality provided by the Clube Naval de Cascais, that the Portuguese stopover is another regular on the 44Cup circuit, having featured every year since 2012. It hosted the World Championship in 2015 and 2017, both of which were won by Team Nika.

The World Sailing Show - September 2019

The Fastnet is one of sailing’s most iconic and challenging races. This year’s edition attracted the biggest fleet to date as 388 yachts set sail on what would prove a record-breaking event as the battle for line honours went right down to the wire.  Also in the Solent, the sport’s fastest fleet racing series made its European debut in equally dramatic style as SailGP broke both records and carbon out on the water.

It’s been a busy few weeks in Japan as well as the 470s played out their world championships on the waters of Enoshima before all ten classes battled it out in the Olympic test event just a year out from the start of the Games. And the Olympic news doesn’t stop there, as World Sailing announced more details of an exciting new offshore class for the 2024 Games in Paris.

Meanwhile back in Europe the Diam 24s concluded their own Tour De France in the Tour Voile, while the 52 Super Series was taking advantage of great conditions in Cascais, Portugal to put on another masterclass.

Cascais 52 Super Series Sailing Week, July 16-20, Cascais, Portugal
Venue: Clube Naval de Cascais. The 52 SUPER SERIES stays on the Atlantic as it returns again to the perennial favourite venue of the Clube Naval de Cascais, which was founded in 1938--Offering challenging and ever-changing winds conditions, and excellent racing areas on the Atlantic coast, Cascais has been proven over the years to have some of the best conditions for sailboat racing in the world. Racing on the Atlantic swell and (usually) big winds means high speed thrills and spills, and the 2018 TP52 World Championship in Cascais proved that to be the case.

Day 4 RC44 Cascais Cup - Charisma claims Cascais and Championship

RC44 Class Association video above published Nov 18, 2018: After day one here in Cascais, Nico Poons' Charisma was dead last having posted a 7-8. Even newcomer to the fleet, Paulo Mirpuri and his Mirpuri Foundation, enjoying his first ever day racing in the RC44 fleet, were ahead. A 2-2-6-1 on day two saw the Monaco-based Dutchman's team fight back to fourth place, still nine points from the lead. Yesterday, a welcome continuation of their winning streak saw them win both races in big winds and giant seas, coinciding with a most unfortunate day for day two's leader, Team Nika. This propelled Charisma into the lead.

Final overall standings:
No racing on the final day left Charisma hitting the jackpot, winning the RC44 Cascais Cup, with a three point advantage over Chris Bake's Team Aqua, second on countback to Igor Lah's Team CEEREF. Charisma also overhauled both Team Nika and Team CEEREF to claim the annual RC44 Championship for the first time. The RC44 Cascais Cup is the final event of the 2018 RC44 Championship Tour which pits the world's top businessmen and the best sailors in the industry compete in high-performance one-design 44-foot carbon racing yachts.

Day 3 RC44 Cascais Cup 2018 - Charisma cleans up in big conditions Cascais

RC44 Class Association video above published Nov 17, 2018: The dramatically different conditions on day three of the RC44 Cascais Cup saw some teams come to the fore today, perhaps better suited to the severe conditions, none more so than Nico Poons' Charisma. The Monaco-based Dutchman had won yesterday's final race and continued his winning streak today to claim bullets in both of the two races held. In comparison yesterday's runaway leader, Vladimir Prosikhin's Team Nika, had a day they'd rather forget, posting a disappointing 6-8, the latter following some leeward gate spinnaker trawling. The end result going into the final day of the RC44 Cascais Cup, and of the 2018 season, is that Charisma has streaked into the lead, three points ahead of Chris Bake's Team Aqua.

RC44 Class Association video above published Nov 16, 2018: Beautiful drone shots from day two in Cascais from our team at Icarus Sports shows just how close the racing is for the teams competing in the RC44 final.

The final event of the 2018 RC44 Championship Tour is being hosted in Cascais, Portugal, 14th -18th November, 2018, taking on the oceanic conditions and big breeze that makes this sunny spot in southern Europe a favourite with all of the RC44 teams. Official website: www.rc44.com

The best shots from the 2018 RC44 World Championship

RC44ClassAssociation video above published Sep 30, 2018: "From our editors at Icarus Sports all the best shots from the 2018 RC44 World Championship."

Day 4 RC44 World Championship 2018 - record third title for Team Nika

RC44ClassAssociation video above published Sep 30, 2018: Team Nika became the first team ever to claim a hat trick of RC44 World Championship titles after Vladimir Prosikhin, tactician Dean Barker and their crew managed to fend off Igor Lah's Team CEEREF on the final day of big conditions racing off Cascais. The two boats started the day with Team Nika five points ahead.

Day 3 RC44 World Championship - Team CEEREF on a charge at RC44 World Championship

RC44 Class Association video above published Sep 29, 2018: Another adrenalin-pumping, top of the range day off Cascais at the RC44 World Championship saw Igor Lah's Team CEEREF claim two bullets from three races, enabling the Slovenian team to stay in contact with Vladimir Prosikhin's ultra-consistent leader Team Nika.

Day 2 RC44 World Championship 2018 - New leader at the RC44 World Championship

RC44ClassAssociation video above published Sep 28, 2018: Day two of their 2018 World Championship will go down in RC44 history books with three races sailed in waves, and at the top of the wind range, forcing teams to break out their no3 headsails and small spinnakers. Racing got underway on time at 1300 when the wind was already in the mid-teens. Once again the right side of the race course, close to the shore, was paying massively, offering the triple win on the upwinds of tidal relief, flatter water and a favourable right shift.

Day 1 RC44 World Championship 2018 - Bronenosec's two bullet surprise

RC44 Class Association video above published Sep 27, 2018: Winning two out of today’s three races made Vladimir Liubomirov and Kirill Frolov’s Bronenosec Sailing Team the stand-out performer on day one of the RC44 World Championship. With winds starting at 12 knots and building into the high teens, plus flat water and shorts and T-shirt temperatures, Cascais laid on tourist board-approved conditions. However these only materialized mid-afternoon, after wise instructions to wait ashore by PRO Peter Reggio and the race management team from the Real Club Nautico de Cascais.

The World Championship, Cascais, is the fourth event of the 2018 RC44 Championship Tour which pits the world's top businessmen and the best sailors in the industry compete in high-performance one-design 44-foot carbon racing yachts.

RC44 CASCAIS CUP, Cascais, Portugal, Sep 28-Oct 1, LIVE Feed

Day 4 RC44 Cascais Cup - Come from behind win for Katusha in Cascais

RC44 Class Association video above published Oct 1, 2017: Cascais laid on an action-packed day for the conclusion of the 2017 RC44 Championship's penultimate event, the RC44 Cascais Cup. At the beginning of it, Igor Lah's Team CEEREF held a slender lead, but lost it to Charisma. By the start of the third and final race Alexander Novoselov's Katusha was leading by two points. Despite Team CEEREF sailing an immaculate final race, a second placed finish for Katusha enabled the Russian team to win the RC44 Cascais Cup by just one point.

Day 3 RC44 Cascais Cup - New faces win races

RC44ClassAssociation video above published Sep 30, 2017: Day three of the RC44 Cascais Cup saw three more teams come to the fore for the first time. Conditions were difficult for the race committee, who ran the first race on the 'offshore course' in wind heading for the high 20s, and then had to move the race track into the Tagus estuary. Here the sea state was calmer, but an unusual offshore northerly was causing significant shifts, gusts and holes in the breeze.

Vladimir Prosikhin's Team Nika has had a difficult regatta so far, having picked up four penalty points following two collisions, but today they came good winning the first race. In less boisterous conditions, today's second race was an RC44 classic, with at least three lead changes with Nico Poons' Charisma untimely taking the win. In the final race there was again a change of leader on the final run on this occasion with Artemis Racing overhauling Katusha to take the win. The RC44 Cascais Cup is the fourth event of the 2017 RC44 Championship Tour, which pits the world's top businessmen and the best sailors in the industry compete in high-performance one-design 44-foot carbon racing yachts.

Day 2 RC44 Cascais Cup - Big conditions arrive for the RC44s

RC44 Class Association video above published Sep 29, 2017: Cascais turned on the conditions for which it is famous – 25 knot winds and sunshine - for day two of the RC44 Cascais Cup.

Day 1 RC44 Cascais Cup - Overtaking manoeuvres

RC44 Class Association video above published Sep 29, 2017: Competition out on the water today showed that it is no aberration that just two points separate the top five boats in the overall 2017 RC44 Championship. After day one the RC44 Cascais Cup leaderboard is similarly tight with just five points separating the top seven boats. Not only were there three different winners, but in each case the winner was not the leader at the first top mark rounding.
