Day 4 RC44 Portoroz Cup - Remarkable come from behind victory for Team Aqua

RC44 Class Association video above published May 13, 2018: At the RC44 Portoroz Cup, it all came down to the final top mark rounding of the final race: Team CEEREF of local host Igor Lah picked up a penalty and, having to complete a mandatory turn, dropped her to last place. Meanwhile a second place in this race for Team Aqua allowed Chris Bake’s team to clinch victory overall by just one point from Team CEEREF on this Slovenian stop of the 2018 RC44 circuit, despite their having come last in today’s first two races. In fact the top four boats all finished within two points here, with Aleph Racing and Peninsula Petroleum putting in strong final day performances leaving them tied on points in third and fourth respectively. Day 4 RC44 Porto Cervo Cup - RC44 victory for Alexander Novoselov’s Katusha

Jul 2, 2017: Two full seasons dedicated to the RC44 class paid off today for Russian Alexander Novoselov, his American tactician Andy Horton and the crew of Katusha, when they won their first ever RC44 Championship event.

Day 2 RC44 Porto Cervo Cup - Katusha ahead after blustery high scoring day

Jun 30, 2017: Uncertainty continued about the weather for day two of the RC44 Porto Cervo Cup, hosted by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. In the event, competitors used most of their sails as, after a light to moderate start, the wind kicked in close to the class’ maximum limit and there were several significant shifts. Thanks to all this, there was plenty of excitement and many many lead changes, but it also proved a high scoring day for the nine RC44s.

The 2017 RC44 Class events season and host venues will be comprised of five European events. Starting in Sotogrande, Spain (27 – 30 April), the fleet will return to the iconic Sardinian sailing mecca of Porto Cervo, Italy (29 June – 2 July), before moving onto to the Marstrand, Sweden for the 2017 RC44 World Championship (10 – 13 August). The penultimate regatta of the season will be held in the sailor’s favourite stop, Cascais, Portugal (28 September – 1 October), with the season finale in November to be announced in the coming weeks. • RC44 BERMUDA CUP - 2 - 6 March
The RC44 Class first ever visit to Bermuda to kick off the 2016 season.
• RC44 SOTOGRANDE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - 11 - 15 May
Sotogrande will be the class’s second stop for their World Championships.
• RC44 PORTSMOUTH CUP - 13 - 17 July
July sees the Tour competing in the UK for the first time, offering a home-water advantage for five-time RC44 Championship Tour winner Team Aqua.

UPDATE: Fleet racing day 4 - Team CEEREF wins RC44 World Championship in two horse race:

The RC44 World Championship Marina de Sotogrande had a worthy winner today in Igor Lah and his Team CEEREF crew, the second occasion the Slovenian team has claimed this prize. But this was only after some anxious moments off the Andalusian port, as Lah's crew slogged it out with local heroes, John Bassadone's Peninsula Petroleum from nearby Gibraltar. Published May 15, 2016

For day three of the RC44 World Championship, Sotogrande laid on the conditions for which it is famous: brilliant sunshine, wind regularly over 20 knots, monster shifts, but surprisingly flat water in the lee of the Andalusian coast. Published on May 13, 2016

Fleet racing day 1 - Team CEEREF masters Atlantic winds:

After an awkward beginning to the regatta yesterday, the RC44 World Championship Marina de Sotogrande fleet racing got underway, providing a reminder to helmsmen, tacticians and crew on all 11 yachts that this Andalusian venue lies just 25km from Gibraltar and the open Atlantic beyond.

Racing today was held in stiff 20+ knot winds that topped out at 27 knots, creating boat speeds of 20+ knots, plus a worthy test for crews. After race one, the fleet was ordered back to Sotogrande Marina when a giant grey cloud crossed the course, obscured the rock of Gibraltar, while emptying its contents upon the crews.

Match Racing - Squally Sotogrande stunts match racing day:

'The rain in Spain stays mainly on the plain', but for the opening day of match racing, prior to the start of the RC44 World Championship Marina de Sotogrande fleet racing, the Andalusian port received an unseasonal, but thorough soaking. 25km away, Gibraltar was obscured by cloud, as the match racing, which rolls from regatta to regatta over the RC44's annual championship, only reached its second flight before there was a giant shift, the wind shut down completely and the boats were sent in. Published on May 11, 2016 - Fleet racing, counting towards the RC44 World Championship Marina de Sotogrande, begins tomorrow at 1130 CET and will run for four days.
