The Extreme Sailing Series™ heads to the Americas as the 2017 calendar is revealed: "The Extreme Sailing Series™, the world’s leading Stadium Racing series, will return to the Americas for the first time in six years in 2017 in what promises to be another action-packed season. After a hugely successful transition to foiling catamarans in 2016 - with the introduction of the super-fast and super-exciting GC32s – the Extreme Sailing Series is now adding two new venues to its roster for its 11th season.

"Alongside existing host venues of Muscat, Qingdao, Madeira, Hamburg and Cardiff, the Series is now set to visit San Diego in California and Los Cabos in Mexico. "“We are thrilled to be heading back to the United States and to Mexico for the first time after a long absence from the Americas,” said Tourell. “I have no doubt that both San Diego, which has a long sailing tradition, and Los Cabos – which is a great sailing destination in its own right - will quickly establish themselves as among the classic venues on our circuit. I am sure the locals in both venues will love the action-packed racing that makes the Extreme Sailing Series unique,” he added. In San Diego the Race Village and all the other elements of the Extreme Sailing Series set-up – including the VIP area and the pontoons - will be based at Harbor Island, and the racing action will take place just five metres from the shore. Joseph Terzi, President & CEO San Diego Tourism Authority commented: “On behalf of San Diego, and our thriving, distinguished sailing community, we welcome with open arms the 2017 Extreme Sailing Series to America’s Finest City ..."--ExtremeSailingSeries.com

Extreme Sailing Series 2016, Muscat, Qingdao, Highlights Video

Extreme Sailing Series™ 2016, Programme One, Muscat & Qingdao:

Highlights from  Extreme Sailing Series, Acts 1 and 2. The curtain was officially raised for the 2016 Extreme Sailing Series™ in March, kicking off the season in style in the Sultanate of Oman. The season started with a stunning coastal race down to the historic old town of Muscat, which saw the new hydro-foiling GC32s race against the backdrop of the Al Alam Royal Castle in the Muttrah Port on the opening day. The fleet then took to the Omani Stadium for three action-packed days of racing, which saw the eight teams really get to grips with flying. Muscat proved the perfect debut for the Extreme Sailing Series to ‘fly’ into its 10th season.

Next stop for the eight-strong fleet was the Olympic Sailing City of Qingdao, China - a regular on the global Stadium Racing circuit. From the 29 April - 2 May Act 2 saw the fleet face the challenging, fickle conditions Qingdao threw at them, with the smallest of mistakes punished on this racecourse. The experienced rose to the top, and a final day showdown saw the eight GC32 hydro-foiling catamarans ‘fly’ on Fushan Bay. (Published May 20, 2016)

Close tough racing in first full week of Seattle Pacific Challenge:

The first full week of the Seattle Pacific Challenge has seen a huge range of difficult conditions in the latest stage of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Right from the start just over a week ago the fleet has engaged in close match racing in a hard fought battle from China, past South Korea and Japan, before heading out into the remote North Pacific. A combination of strong currents, pushing the amateur crew against storm force winds towards Seattle, on the US West Coast, churned up steep waves which battered the sturdy 70-foot ocean racing yachts. Published March 30, 2016

Watch log | Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015"OCTOBER 17, 2014, 1800 UTC Latest position report 1730 UTC Leader: Dongfeng Race Team
Spread of fleet: 36 nautical miles
 Wind speed: 13-21 knots
 Wind direction: north-northeast
Boat speed: 12-19 knots At 0700 UTC, Team SCA gybed towards the coast of the Western Sahara. The rest of the fleet followed – but a couple of hours later. And that little, subtle time difference explains tonight’s split. Led by Dongfeng, the first six boats are within 11 miles of each other while Team SCA are now 36 miles at the back of the fleet. So - what’s next for them? Yesterday, Dongfeng held their lead overnight after heading offshore. But the boats closer to the African coast are now in 20 knots of northerly wind – that’s a good acceleration compared to the lighter sea breeze of the past days. In these changing wind conditions, will the teams stay close to the shore tonight, or sail away from it?

OCTOBER 17 2014, 0500 UTC Latest position report 0500 UTC Leader: Dongfeng Race Team Spread of fleet: 25.8 nautical miles Wind speed: 11 knots Wind direction: northeast Boat speed: 14 knots The fleet continues to be closely bunched, sailing as close to the West African coast as possible with Dongfeng Race Team still retaining the overnight lead. All seven boats were afraid to push out west into the open Atlantic until a more solid wind materializes. The fleet has been gybing a lot with more place changes then ever before at this stage of the Volvo Ocean Race. This is intense inshore racing, gybe for gybe with your opposition breathing down your neck 24/7...."

Reality hits | Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015: "If the boats had been tempted to say a little prayer to the weather gods as they stumbled and slowed in the light winds of the Gibraltar Strait, then they might want to be careful what they wish for in future. Storms and rain battered and bruised the hulls of the boats, soaking skin and stinging eyes – and the sailors were left breathless and weary after a long night of wrestling the waves. “You know you’re in trouble when you see all red on the charts,” says Team Vestas Wind tired navigator Wouter nervously, bleary eyes blinking and squinting in the warm, emergency glow of his computer screen. And it was all red. Red enough to highlight his faded, fatigued face and his lips, giving extra weight and emphasis to his words. Alongside his skipper Chris Nicholson, he has hardly slept a wink. Well, there’s no time to rest." (read more at the link above)

Extreme Sailing Series Act 3 Day 3 video

Extreme Sailing Series Act 3 Day 3 video above: The penultimate day of the Land Rover Extreme Sailing Series Act 3 Qingdao, China, for the 'Double Star Mingren' Cup, challenged the fleet today as the teams moved up - and down - the leaderboard. It was Realteam's time to shine, and a string of consistent results upgraded their overnight position from fourth to second place, knocking The Wave, Muscat and Emirates Team New Zealand down the leaderboard. Heading into tomorrow's final day, Alinghi remain in pole position, but with the rest of the fleet chasing hard - and up to 90 points on the table for the taking - it is still all to play for, with the double points finale rounding off racing tomorrow.

Swiss dominate as Alinghi and Realteam lead the charge ahead of the final Qingdao showdown » Extreme Sailing Series: " Alinghi hold onto pole position, with Realteam hot on their heels after an outstanding day by Jérôme Clerc and his team. - The Wave, Muscat set out to defend their reign at the top of the Series leaderboard, heading into the final showdown in third place. - Emirates Team New Zealand finish the day strongly with two back to back race wins. - Tense mid-leaderboard battle, with only 25 points separating fifth to eleventh places at close of play – little more than the difference of tomorrow’s final double points race. - GAC Pindar settle in for a night in the pitlane after a collision with Team Extreme Qingdao. On a packed-eight race day at Act 3 of the Extreme Sailing Series™ in Qingdao, the battle lines were drawn between the 12 competing international Extreme 40 teams ahead of tomorrow’s final showdown... America’s Cup: Sir Ben in the slow lane to progress as teams sent designs for shorter 62-foot catamarans - Sailing - More Sports - The Independent: "The agonisingly slow process of organising and presenting the next America’s Cup takes a few steps forward this week as potential challengers are sent the design outlines for the boats to be used, 62-foot catamarans using wing sails and foils to skim across the top of the water. They are being asked for comments...."

Tech students construct classically built sailboat: "Raylynn Driskell wanted to build an airplane, but lacking vast resources, he settled on building boats instead. His latest creation, created in partnership with his girlfriend and fellow Montana Tech mechanical engineering student Krystal Klietz, is an 11.5-foot gaff-rigged cutter, a classically built sailboat. They showed off their creation Thursday at Montana Tech’s third annual Techxpo Design Showcase. Modern sailboats, while having good performance and safety, lack the elegance and style of their vintage counterparts. Driskell and Klietz’s sailboat has all the flair of an 18th century ship, but it’s a whole lot safer...."

"The breeze went up a notch or two for the penultimate day of Antigua Sailing Week, powering up the Caribbean swell to deliver yet more idyllic racing conditions....Piet Vroon’s team are assured of the class win and the 84 year-old Dutchman was a happy man dockside: “Of course we will still race tomorrow (Friday), we have come here to race and why wouldn’t you want to with such beautiful conditions. We have been racing at a number of regattas and offshore races in the Caribbean and our worst result in any race has been second, so it has been a very worthwhile exercise.” Joining Tonnerre de Breskens 3 with a perfect scoreline are two other yachts, Irishman David Cullen’s J/109, Pocket Rocket and Max Katinov’s Russian Dufour 44, Cayenne. Whilst these yachts are assured of their respective class titles, several are undecided and will go to the wire Friday..." (source and more info on Antigua Sailing Week, April 26-May 2, here )

Full pressure day as the Extreme 40 fleet battle huge gusts on the Qingdao stadium racecourse » Extreme Sailing Series: " It was a full pressure day as the fleet moved into the stadium racing mode at the Land Rover Extreme Sailing Series™ in Qingdao, described by the skippers as ‘radical’, ‘full-on’, ‘unpredictable’ and gnarly’, with gusts up to 32 knots weaving their way through the surrounding skyscrapers like bullets screaming across the stadium racecourse. The racing was right on the edge, and the teams used all their strength to muscle their speed machines expertly around the track, tackling a huge wind range of over 20 knots. The experience of both Alinghi and The Wave, Muscat was evident, and the teams relished today’s big breeze as much as yesterday’s light winds, remaining first and second respectively, while one first and two second places for the Kiwis on Emirates Team New Zealand upgraded their overall position to third, ahead of tomorrow’s penultimate day’s racing..."
