RSHYR - Wild Oats XI - Line Honours Winner

Wild Oats XI owned by the Oatley Family crossed the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race finish line in 1 day, 19 Hours, 7 Minutes and 21 seconds to take out her ninth Line Honours win. It was a spectacular sight to see the four remaining supermaxis all in the Derwent River at the same time. Wild Oats XI was followed across the line by Black Jack 28 minutes later with Comanche crossing close behind a further 1 minute later. Crosbie Lorimer video above first published Dec 27, 2018.

RSHYR 2018 - Supermaxi Interviews

RSHYR 2018 – Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2018 post-race supermaxi interviews: With much of the attention in Hobart focused on the AIS protest against Wild Oats XI (the protest was found invalid at the hearing) this selection of interviews with skippers and some highly credentialed crew aboard the four super maxis gives some insights on how things played out on the water for the four super maxis. Bow Caddy spoke to Juan Vila (Wild Oats XI), Mark Bradford, Tom Addis and Brad Butterworth (Black Jack), Kyle Langford (Comanche) and Chris Nicholson and Bouwe Bekking (InfoTrack). Even across this eminent line-up there was some surprise that four such different designs could occupy the same patch of water for so much of the race. RSHYR 2018 – Kialoa II Interview with Paddy Broughton

In 2017 Kialoa II finished the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in a very respectable time, despite breaking her boom on the first day. In 2018 this Sparkman and Stephens classic reveled in the strong downwind running of the first day with 5 sails flying, stuck it out through some light patches mid race and then finished her run with a typical upwind thrash around Tasman Island and across Storm Bay in 30 plus knots, arriving in Hobart with no damage at all. Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2018 – Corinthian spirit

The 2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race concluded on 31 December 2018 with the final prizegiving held in Hobart, Tasmania. Of the 85 yachts who started the 74th edition, 79 completed the 628-nm race and there were six retirements. Recipients of Rolex timepieces were Alive as overall race winner and Wild Oats XI for line honours. The achievements of all class winners were recognized as were the personal and collective achievements of the sailors and crews in finishing this revered and grueling offshore race, one which is embodied by a true Corinthian spirit. Rolex has been Title Sponsor of the 628-nm race, organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia with the collaboration of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, since 2002.

UPDATE Dec 29: ALIVE, a 66-ft Reichel/Pugh design owned by Phillip Turner, has been announced as overall winner of the 2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race on corrected time.

Rolex World of Yachting video: ALIVE, a 66-ft Reichel/Pugh design owned by Phillip Turner, has been announced as overall winner of the 2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. The fifth yacht to finish this year's race, Alive prevails from an 85-strong international fleet. Alive becomes the first Tasmanian yacht to win the race since 1979 and the fourth winner from the island since the inaugural race in 1945. Turner and his crew were rewarded for their historic success with the Tattersall Cup and a Rolex timepiece at a presentation held on Constitution Dock. Rolex has been Title Sponsor of the 628-nm race, organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia with the collaboration of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, since 2002.

Dec 29, 2018--Following a protest against Wild Oats XI by the Race Committee of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, which was held by the International Jury at Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania today, it was found that the protest was invalid and so Wild Oats XI retains her line honours crown.

Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht 2018 – Line Honours

Rolex World of Yachting video above published Dec 28, 2018: A thrilling contest for 2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart line honours went down to the wire with the fleet’s remaining four 100-ft Maxis offering a compelling spectacle and finishing within 42 minutes of each other. Having assumed leadership of the 628-nm race shortly after 04:00 AEDT on the second morning, Wild Oats XI extended her advantage down the Derwent River to cross the Hobart finish line in first place. Owned by the Oatley family and skippered by Mark Richards, Wild Oats XI extends her record number of line honours victories to nine. Peter Harburg’s Black Jack finished second on the water prevailing from an epic duel with last year’s line honours winner Comanche. The gap a mere 63 seconds. The spotlight now turns to who will claim the Tattersall’s Cup and Rolex timepiece as overall race winner.

The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race Race Committee had previously advised that they lodged a protest against Wild Oats XI: "The Race Committee received a report from the owner of Black Jack advising that Wild Oats XI’s AIS had not transmitted throughout the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2018. On investigation, and based on its own evidence, the Race Committee considers there may have been a breach of S.I. 11.4 in respect of Special Regulation 4.09 (a)." According to the CYCA Commodore, Paul Billingham: “The Race Committee is independent of the organising authority of the race to ensure objectivity is maintained and seen to be maintained in circumstances such as this.”

Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2018 – A Close Contest

Thirty hours into the 74th edition of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, the four 100-ft Maxis at the front of the fleet were separated by a mere five-nautical miles with a little under 200-nautical miles still to complete. A close contest between the race leaders has ensued ever since yesterday’s memorable Sydney Harbour start. Although the race record is unlikely to be challenged, an exciting finale down the Derwent River into Hobart is forecast. There had been four retirements and the majority of the 81-strong fleet were negotiating the Bass Strait. Rolex has been Title Sponsor of the 628-nm race, organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia with the collaboration of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, since 2002. Rolex World of Yachting video above published Dec 27, 2018.

See also Rolex World of Yachting video published Dec 26, 2018: The 74th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race -- a diverse fleet of 85 yachts are contesting the 2018 edition of this famous 628-nautical mile offshore race. Of the five 100-ft Maxis set to contest line honours it was Peter Harburg’s Black Jack who made the most impressive start as first yacht to clear Sydney Heads leading Wild Oats XI, InfoTrack and Scallywag with race record holder Comanche forced to recover ground. A tactically intriguing contest lies ahead with variable conditions forecast and the chances of the race record being broken for the third year running appearing unlikely. The chase for the race’s most coveted prize, overall victory on corrected time, rewarded with the Tattersall’s Cup and Rolex timepiece, is wide open. Matt Allen’s Ichi Ban is among the yachts in contention and attempting to become the first yacht since 1965 to win back-to-back titles. Rolex has been title sponsor of the race, organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, since 2002.

A Look Back at Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2017 (video)

Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2017

An Offshore Classic: The 73rd edition of the Rolex Sydney Hobart demonstrated once again why this offshore race has such elevated standing in the yacht racing and, indeed, sporting world. 102 yachts took part, each with their own personal ambition. For the vast majority, winning overall was the ultimate goal. Only one boat can claim the main prize. It takes planning, commitment and skill to succeed in the pursuit of excellence. Matt Allen and the crew of Ichi Ban delivered those characteristics and were justly rewarded with the Tattersall Cup and Rolex timepiece. For the other competing crews, their triumph was to start the race at all. Completing the course was the icing on the cake.

The 2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race starts from Sydney Harbour, Australia--the warning signal for the race will be signalled at 1250 hours AEDT (Australian Eastern Daylight Saving)--on 26 December 2018.

RSHYR 2017 Will Oxley - Navigation 001

Club Marine TV video above published Dec 31, 2017: Appropriately enough, the name Ichi Ban in Japanese means 'No 1' and if your were looking for an ocean racing navigator to get you to No 1 in the race to Hobart, you'd be hard pressed to go past Will Oxley.

In this conversation with Will, shortly after Ichi Ban was presented with the Tattersall Cup here in Hobart, he explains just how challenging navigation can be on a TP 52 in heavy airs and why any amount of technology will not help you with some decisions that must still be calculated in the head or plotted on a paper chart.

UPDATE Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2017 Overall Winner:

Rolex World of Yachting video above published Dec 28, 2017: The TP52 Ichi Ban, owned and skippered by seasoned campaigner Matt Allen, has won the 73rd Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race and, with it, the Tattersall Cup and Rolex timepiece reserved for the overall winner on corrected time. One of the pre-race favourites to secure one of yachting’s greatest prizes, Allen and his crew had to put aside their usual prudence in a calculated gamble. With a large number of strong boats favoured by the forecast conditions, there was no room for caution. Ichi Ban’s closest rival proved to be two-time winner, Bob Steel and Quest, which added to the mounting pressure. Making the most of the fast running conditions of the second day, and avoiding serious damage, Ichi Ban prevailed, erasing the disappointment of 2016 when a five-hour becalming in the Derwent dashed their hopes of victory.

Dec 28: Jim Cooney and LDV Comanche secured the line honours victory at the 2017 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race after a protested incident between the two 100-footers, Wild Oats XI and LDV Comanche, shortly after the start, was determined in favour of Comanche:

Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2017 - Race Start

Rolex World of Yachting video above published Dec 26, 2017: "The 2017 Rolex Sydney Hobart has started. 102 yachts, including 27 international entries, are participating in the 628nm bluewater classic, which marks its 73rd edition this year. The race got underway in a light easterly breeze, under a grey leaden sky. Black Jack, one of four 100-footers, led the fleet out of the harbour, witnessed by thousands of well-wishers on both land and water. Once outside the Sydney Harbour heads, the fleet turned south into the Tasman Sea and headed down the New South Wales coast towards the eastern fringe of Bass Strait. Organized by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in collaboration with the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, the race has been sponsored by Rolex since 2002. Success in this offshore contest demands total commitment, perfect preparation and precise crew work. The rewards for the crew that overcomes all others are a true symbol of achievement."

Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2017 Preview Video:

Rolex World of Yachting video above published Nov 20, 2017: The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is a true test of human and machine. Organized by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in collaboration with the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, this 628 nautical mile offshore race requires meticulous preparation, honed skills and resolute determination just to finish. Securing the Tattersall’s Cup and coveted Rolex timepiece awarded to the overall winner requires all those values and more.

Hobart Weather – The Navigators’ Take: Club Marine TV video published Dec 23, 2017: "A few days out from the start of the big race south to Hobart and the weather modelling is suggesting a relatively benign track, with a high over Tasmania blocking the normal pattern of southerly fronts, while still promising some strong downwind running. Taking a rare opportunity provided by some of the world’s best ocean racing navigators being in the same place as the forecast was announced, we asked them what they made of the projections and how they would tackle the predicted conditions aboard their respective boats."

The 2017 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race marks the 73rd edition of this time-honoured tradition. Over 100 yachts, including 30 overseas entries, are expected to cross the start line at 13:00 AEDT on 26 December 2017 (Dec 25th at 9pm EST in U.S.). The 72nd edition of the Rolex Sydney Hobart closed on 1 January with the official prizegiving organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania. 2016 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race UPDATES, Sailing Videos

2016 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race – 29 December – Giacomo crowned race winner:

Jim Delegat’s Giacomo is confirmed as the overall winner of the 2016 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. Giacomo, a 70-ft yacht from New Zealand, becomes the first overseas yacht to win the race since 2007. Victory is reward for an excellent and consistent race and is a triumph of persistence. Two years ago, Giacomo was forced to retire from the Rolex Sydney Hobart after she dismasted off the Tasmanian coast. After a year rebuilding the boat, the crew returned for the 72nd edition of the race determined to make amends for that disappointment. After finishing just under two hours behind line honours winner Perpetual LOYAL, and registering the second fastest time in the race’s history, overall victory was confirmed when the pursuing yachts hit fickle conditions in Storm Bay and along the Derwent River. Reward for this outstanding success came in the shape of the Tattersall’s Cup and a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 40.
Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2016 – 28 December – A New Race Record:

Taking advantage of a consistent breeze throughout the 628-nautical mile race, Perpetual LOYAL enjoyed close competition with eight-time line honours winner Wild Oats XI, assuming leadership of the race shortly after the latter’s retirement. It was a lead she preserved during the final stages of the race along the eastern coast of Tasmania and down the Derwent River to the finish line in Hobart. During the line honours presentation held on Constitution Dock in Hobart, Bell and his crew were rewarded for their remarkable exploits with the J.H. Illingworth Trophy and a Rolex Yacht-Master II timepiece.
