The Luna Rossa Journey & Quest for the Ultimate Prize (video)

The Luna Rossa Journey & Quest for the Ultimate Prize

Luna Rossa’s quest for the America's Cup began two decades ago. An epic win of the Louis Vuitton Cup in Auckland in 2000, defeating America One, to move on to the America's Cup finals against Team New Zealand was a defining moment for Patrizio Bertelli’s Italian challenge that has endured the test of time and continues their pursuit in the 36th America's Cup presented by Prada.

Produced by award winning producer, Michael Mann and renowned editor, Claire Simpson (Academy Award for Platoon) this film captures the extreme moments on the water, from the America's Cup racing in Auckland to Valencia and on to San Francisco.

In the words of the late Sir Peter Blake: ‘You didn't win…but you only lose if you don’t have the courage to return.” Overcoming disappointing, to challenge again, the film explores the intensity of human resolve that makes the America's Cup the most complex trophy to win. Standings after Leg 6 (via VolvoOceanRace.com)

Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18 Leg 7: This is the defining leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, the longest leg of the race--7,600 nautical miles--and most of it is through some of the coldest, roughest ocean in the world. The fleet will leave Auckland on 18 March and head south past New Zealand’s East Cape into the Southern Ocean. Once they get far enough south they will be racing from west to east, sailing within the Westerly Storm Track (low pressure systems circulating west-to east around Antarctica), running with the low pressure systems that prowl around Antarctica. There will be big waves and there will be big breeze. And icebergs. Once across this vast expanse of ocean they will have to negotiate the legendary Cape Horn – where the power of the South Pacific slams into South America – and then turn north, traversing the coast of Argentina, Uruguay and finally Brazil to ItajaĆ. America's Cup Parade In Auckland, New Zealand (video)

America's Cup Parade Auckland

Video above published July 6, 2017: It's fair to say the America's Cup welcome home parade in Auckland was a pretty special day for everyone at Emirates Team New Zealand. The parade in central Auckland on Thursday, July 6th, celebrated the team and their incredible victory and to welcome the return of the America’s Cup to New Zealand for the first time since it left in 2003.

We won the America's Cup!

Video above published on Jun 26, 2017: "We did it. The America's Cup is coming home for New Zealand."

When Emirates Team New Zealand sped through the finish line to win the 35th America's Cup in Bermuda, Emirates Team New Zealand and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS) became the next defender and trustee of the Auld Mug. And the moment the New Zealand boat crossed the line to win the America’s Cup, the RNZYS accepted a challenge from Luna Rossa’s Circolo della Vela Sicillia (CVS) for the 36th America’s Cup. Representatives from the two teams and clubs will decide on the rules for the next America’s Cup. It is expected that the Protocol will be released in a few weeks, defining (among other things):
  • Structure of the organizing body of the event (commercially and sportively)
  • Venue(s)
  • Dates of the event
  • Class of boat(s) to be used (with Class Rule to follow)
  • Regatta format, including preliminary or World Series type events (if any)
  • Entry process and associated fees
  • Nationality restrictions
  • Media/commercial rights restrictions / split between event organizer and teams
  • Profit sharing between event organizer and teams
Once the rules are defined and published, clubs and their teams will have the information needed to decide whether to take up the challenge for the 36th America's Cup.

Cyclone Pam Delays Volvo Ocean Race Start, Leg 5 Auckland-Itajai, #VOR #BWR2015 Videos

Batten down the hatches | Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 - March 15, 2015: With Cyclone Pam rolling into New Zealand, the Volvo Ocean Race fleet are staying onshore for an extra couple of days.

Volvo Ocean Race, Leg 5, Auckland, New Zealand to Itajai, Brazil:
UPDATED SUNDAY MARCH 15 from the Volvo Ocean Race: "Due to the possibility of a developing supercyclone, there have been some changes to this weekend's schedule... Our weather team currently predicts a possibility for severe weather with strong and gusty winds and heavy rainfall from Sunday afternoon to Monday midday. The planned Leg 5 departure for Sunday March 15 has been delayed to Tuesday March 17 at the earliest. There will be no sailing on Sunday and the Race Village will be closed.
MONDAY: Current forecasts suggest that Monday could be the worst affected day weather-wise. As a result, there are no plans for any events at this stage. The Race Village will be closed.
TUESDAY: The decision has been made that the boats will not leave Auckland until Tuesday March 17 at the earliest. The ambition is to leave somewhere between Tuesday midday and Wednesday afternoon. We will inform of an exact and updated time in due course. “This weather is very rare for the race, and for New Zealand," said Race CEO Knut Frostad on Friday. As we are dealing with a severe and extreme weather scenario the race organiser reserves the right to change the timing of any sailing, racing or event at any time if that should be required." Volvo Ocean Race, Leg 4 Finish Auckland, Sailing Videos

Leg 4 finish highlights | Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 - Feb 28, 2015: After 20 days at sea, Leg 4 came to an end in Auckland. “It has been really tough”, admits a very happy Xabi FernĆ”ndez, the winning skipper of MAPFRE. The Spanish boat crossed the finish line first in what we could call a “Volvo Ocean 65 traffic jam!" Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing followed five minutes after them only, and Dongfeng Race Team 10 minutes later. All welcomed in the Kiwi night by an enthusiast audience.

Spanish eyes are smiling | Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015: "Xabi FernĆ”ndez’s beaming smile was as wide as the bay of Auckland. What a difference three legs make. MAPFRE finished rock bottom in Cape Town after Leg 1, but tonight, here in Auckland, they emerged victorious from one of the most closely fought stages this 41-year-old race has ever witnessed. No wonder their stand-in skipper FernĆ”ndez looked so happy. And no wonder he and the rest of his crew looked so exhausted. “Super happy, super happy," beams Xabi. "It was a very tough leg, a very tough last few days especially. “We were struggling with Abu Dhabi and Dongfeng at the beginning, we were a bit slower, and in the Doldrums too. And this morning we saw them very close and managed to pass them. Since then we led the whole way!""

Dean Barker not ready to give up sailing but admits he and Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton aren't 'mates' | Stuff.co.nz: "...Barker was sensationally axed as skipper of Team New Zealand yesterday with helming duties for the 2017 campaign in Bermuda to be battled out between Australian Glenn Ashby and rising Kiwi star Peter Burling. Barker has an offer to be the syndicate's sailing coach and performance manager but doesn't appear interested in that. Barker hit out at Team New Zealand management's handling of his dumping yesterday and the friction is clearly still there today..."
