Global recession takes toll on Volvo Ocean Race | Te Waha Nui: "The recession has hit the Volvo Ocean Race which a decade ago had 50 entrants and now has six. Port director for the Auckland stopover Tom Mayo believes the event will continue, but puts the recent decline in boats down to the current economic situation. “Teams have always had to have a large budget to gain entry into this race. It takes around $15 to $20 million to put together a team.” Former volvo sailor Ben Costello took part in the event in 2008, and says over the last four it has been a strain to gain funding for teams. “It’s a massive investment for a sponsor.” But Mayo is confident in the future of the event. “We have a long term strategy to reduce costs…while keeping the event quality tight.”"
