Sopot Match Race, Alpari World Match Racing Tour, Jul 31-Aug 3 (video)

Sopot Match Race, Alpari World Match Racing Tour, July 31-August 3 (promo video above)
Sopot is the most prestigeous sea resort in Poland located by the Baltic Sea, between Gdansk and Gdynia. 12 teams will be competing at the Sopot Match Race, Stage 3 of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour starting on 31 July and culminating in the final on 3 of August.

ALPARI World Match Racing Tour - Alpari World Match Racing Tour moves on to Poland: "Sopot, Poland (30th July 2014): One of the most exciting developments in the Alpari World Match Racing Tour for 2014 is the addition of Sopot Match Race into its roster of events.  This year will be the 11th edition of Sopot Match Race, taking place on the Baltic in the Polish holiday resort close to Gdansk. As a nation Poland is one of the most prolific internationally when it comes to match racing with the annual Polish Match Tour comprising five or six events annually. As a result, according to event organiser and competitor Przemek Tarnacki, his country also has more sailors in the top 100 of the ISAF match race rankings than any other. It is therefore fitting that Poland’s top event for the first time this year should form part of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour... Racing takes place over 4 days from Thursday 31st July until Sunday 3rd August and sunshine with a light to moderate sea breeze are to be expected. The format will see a full round of Qualifying, with the winner advancing to the Semi Finals, followed by a 6 team Quarter Final then Semi Final and Final."

European challengers commit to America's Cup: "Four European teams promised on Friday to compete for the next America's Cup, ensuring the event would be viable after official challenger Team Australia pulled out because of rising costs. The European rivals from Italy, Sweden, Britain and France said they would cooperate with Oracle Team USA, the holders, to ensure the 35th America's Cup in 2017 was a sporting and commercial success. "The teams Luna Rossa Challenge, Artemis Racing, Ben Ainslie Racing and Team France – jointly with the yacht clubs they represent – confirm their full support to the event, regardless of the host venue that will be selected," they said in a joint statement. Planning for the 2017 Cup was thrown into turmoil last week when the Australians, the Challenger of Record, withdrew from the event. The next America's Cup will be sailed in either San Diego or Bermuda, with the venue to be confirmed in October...."

Rio Olympics Faces Test as Sailors Race on ‘Toilet’ Bay - Bloomberg: "At a competition last year in Rio de Janeiro, which will be the first South American host of the multisports showpiece in 2016, there was a problem. The quickest path for the 49er class sailor and his teammate Nikolaus Resch would have meant cutting through a swath of garbage including plastic chairs and tables. “It was strategic decision where to go because of the trash in the water,” Dalle Karth said in an interview at the Sao Francisco sailing club in Niteroi as he prepared for the 2016 Olympics first test event, the Aquece Rio sailing regatta beginning Aug. 2. “You couldn’t go to the left because you had to stop three times afterward to get the trash off your center board and rudder” ... Rio has pledged to clean up the Guanabara Bay, an iconic location shadowed by the city’s famous Sugarloaf mountain. The bay is so polluted that local rowing coach Fabio Araujo won’t take on students who haven’t been vaccinated against hepatitis A and B. Sperry Top-Sider Nood in Marblehead: Sunday | Sailing World: "... As the first guns sounded, the rain started to fall and by the third leg of the J/105 fleet’s first race the combination of light air and building chop kept many of the lead boats from making significant gains up the course. “It made the course very challenging going upwind today,” said J/105 overall winner Ric Dexter... Seemingly indifferent to the difficult conditions throughout the weekend was David Nelson and his crew aboard his Rhodes 19, USA 3172. Not only did they take first place in the Rhodes 19 class, but also snagged the honor of Marblehead NOOD Overall Winner. The top spot earned Nelson and his crew a berth at the NOOD Championship in the British Virgin Islands in October, which will be sailed in 44-foot boats provided by Sunsail." Volvo Ocean Race, A Test Of Sailing Endurance (video)

Just another day at the office | Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 | video above

Volvo Ocean Race: A $20 Million Test Of Sailing Endurance: " .... On October 11, the fleet of identical 65-foot ocean racers will set off from Alicante, Spain on the first leg of the 40,000-mile race, which has been held every three years since 1973. For Enright and his young crew, it’s a chance to prove themselves in one of the toughest endurance contests in sailing... The boats will race from Alicante to Cape Town and from there to Abu Dhabi; Sanya, China; Aukland, New Zealand and around Cape Horn to Brazil and Newport before finishing in Gothenburg, Sweden. The race is expected to take 10 months and will cost the average team about $20 million, including the cost of shore crews who will move a pair of shipping containers full of supplies in leapfrog fashion in front of the boats... To drive down costs from previous years, the 65-foot, carbon-fiber boats are all the same... Volvo 65s have canting keels, hinged arms with a lead bulb that can be swung 40 degrees from side to side to provide more stability at the cost of a complex system of hydraulic rams to move the keel. After years of tinkering, the hydraulic rams and swing joints appear to be durable enough to survive a circumnavigation of the globe...."
