Marine Debris & Ocean Currents, US Sailing Reach for STEM Education

Marine Debris & Ocean Currents

Back to School with US Sailing's Reach for STEM Education - Many people don't realize that ocean currents not only transport fish, nutrients, heat and other important natural phenomena around the planet, but they also circulate our trash! Yep, that water bottle that fell out of your boat when you capsized is halfway to Tahiti by now! Understanding how currents work, including how to measure them using drifters, allows scientists to better predict ocean circulation. In this video by Waterlust outlines a simple experiment you can do to measure the currents at your home.

Para World Sailing equipment evaluation: What was the process of choosing the boats for evaluation? We sent out notices to most of the boat manufacturers and the ones that responded are the ones that are here and were in Italy. The boats primarily had to be inexpensive, be able to fit many in a container and have worldwide distribution. So at the moment there are a lot of disabilities that can sail the Paralympic classes, is it important to keep this? Yes, it is important to keep. We want our present sailors and future sailors to be able to have the opportunity to compete. Sailing is in the brain, not always in the boat. So, in brief, what do you have to change and can it be achieved? What we are trying to do is achievable. We have to change the thought process of existing sailors to a different format of racing. But also, I think we can be a leader in sailing. We have the opportunity to increase our technology around theatre or close to shore sailing. For example, we can get drones up in the air, make it exciting with the technology available and also make it exciting for people viewing from land. Read more: WorldSailing | sailing.org

“The thirteen American sailors who have qualified to represent USA at this event should be very proud,” said Josh Adams, Managing Director of US Olympic Sailing. “US Sailing is a strong supporter of the ISAF Youth Worlds, and we think that youth racers should strive to compete at this level. We are excited to provide the highest level of training and preparation ever given to a US Sailing Youth Worlds Team in the form of dedicated training camps and world-class coaching, which is central to the new Olympic Development Program (ODP) launched by US Sailing in early 2015.”
