Published July 8, 2016: STEELE THROUGH WITH THE MATCH POINT! - WMRT Marstrand 2016

Phil Robertson has been crowned World Match Racing Champion after beating Taylor Canfield in an epic, high-wind duel today in the Final of the World Match Racing Tour. The 29-year-old and his Robertson Racing crew also banked US $33,000 for winning in Marstrand, Sweden, plus a World Champion’s bonus of $1,000,000. It’s the largest prize money ever awarded in the sport of sailing, but Robertson’s whoops of joy and celebration were more about winning the title of Match Racing World Champion. “It’s a dream come true and the goal we’ve been striving for since 2009,” he told the crowd that he just done his best to drench with champagne. “ To do it here in Marstrand, I couldn’t think of a better place. Thank you all for watching, I hope it was entertaining because we sure had fun.” More info: wmrt.com -  Top 20 teams from the season leader board battled all out in this final leg with an eye for the biggest prize money in sailing history of USD1million and the championship trophy.

  • World Sailing undertake full review of the Sailing World Cup : World Sailing: "At the February 2016 meeting of the World Sailing Executive Committee in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, it was agreed that a strategic review would be undertaken of the Sailing World Cup from 2017-2020 in order to ensure that the event series remains the best possible showcase for the sport on the journey to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The review will be concluded and proposals presented at the World Sailing mid-year meeting in Lausanne in May 2016. The comprehensive review will include considering continental representation, calendar and venues, events, sailor quotas, ranking points, Para World Sailing and the role of known and future Olympic venues within the calendar. Sailors will continue to be placed at the heart of the Sailing World Cup, ensuring it is attractive to athletes, commercial partners and the media. It was agreed that any existing World Sailing contracts with Sailing World Cup Organising Authorities for 2016 would be honoured. World Sailing Chief Executive, Andy Hunt, and World Sailing President, Carlo Croce, met with Abu Dhabi organisers at the end of February. Following the World Sailing Executive Committee decision in November 2015 to host the 2016 World Sailing Annual Conference in Europe rather than Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority took the decision to withdraw their financial support of the 2016 Sailing World Cup Final and future editions of the event. World Sailing will seek a venue partner for the 2016 Sailing World Cup Final and contractual discussions are ongoing with an alternative venue. World Sailing expect to confirm dates for events in the final quarter of 2016 by the end of March."

RC44 Marstrand Cup, Sweden, Match Racing, Fleet Racing Videos

Match Racing Highlights - RC44 Marstrand Cup - published on Jul 29, 2015: The opening day of the RC44 Marstrand Cup saw Bronenosec Sailing Team consolidate its lead at the top of the 2015 RC44 Match Racing championship.

Russian consistency pays off in Marstrand - RC Forty Four: "... After winning Tuesday's match racing, Bronenosec has only finished off the podium in one fleet race, which Italian tactician Michele Ivaldi puts down to a combination of going the right way, his skipper steering well and good boat speed, thanks to trimmers Paul Westlake and Maciel Cicchetti. "They did a fantastic job - we had clean starts, clean lanes upwind and the speed did most of it. We got a few good shifts and all the manoeuvres were done flawlessly from the crew."..."

Day 1 Fleet Racing Highlights - RC44 Marstrand Cup - published on Jul 29, 2015: Just one point separates the top three teams after the opening day of fleet racing at the RC44 Marstrand Cup. At the close of play Team Nika leads on seven points, ahead of Artemis Racing and Charisma on eight.

The America's Cup is a Match Race -- 2 boats and only one winner, there is no "second" --  Queen Victoria, who was watching at the finish line of the first America's Cup in 1851, was reported to have asked who was second, the famous answer being: "Ah, Your Majesty, there is no second." This year the winner will either be Oracle Team USA (the "defender") or Emirates Team New Zealand a/k/a the "Kiwis" (the "challenger"). Racing starts Saturday, September 7th.

Experts foresee good matchup for America's Cup - SFGate: "As Gary Jobson sees it, the Kiwis are like "a well-choreographed Broadway show" and the Oracle sailors are "still auditioning." He also thinks the Emirates Team New Zealand crew might have an edge in motivation. Unlike the Oracle guys, they're sailing for their country. As Nathan Outteridge sees it, Oracle has a slight speed edge upwind. The key will be not just getting to the first mark first but leading at the bottom, or second mark. "That's probably going to determine the race," he said. Jobson and Outteridge are expert commentators on the TV coverage of the America's Cup regatta, the experienced Jobson handling the in-race analysis and the newcomer Outteridge providing postrace commentary. Both say it's difficult to predict the outcome of the finals - a welcome case after the tedious predictability of the first seven weeks of the regatta...."
