Vendee Globe 2012-13 starts Saturday, November 10

ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered dans les starting-blocks by VendeeGlobeTV
Vendée Globe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "The Vendée Globe is a round-the-world single-handed yacht race, sailed non-stop and without assistance.[1] The race was founded by Philippe Jeantot in 1989, and since 1992 has taken place every four years. The 2012-2013 edition is set to start Saturday, November 10, 2012. As the only single-handed non-stop round-the-world race (in contrast to the VELUX 5 Oceans Race, which is sailed in stages), the race is a serious test of individual endurance, and is regarded by many as the ultimate in ocean racing."

A round up of today's skippers press conferences - Vendée Globe 2012-2013: "Jérémie Beyou, FRA, Maitre Coq: “ The night before the start I make sure I get more sleep and I will wake up earlier. The morning is a bit of a blur. There are so many people who come to greet you, to see you but you are in your bubble. I apologize in advance to those that I wont have time to say goodbye or even smile at. Once in the channel you have this huge surge of emotion. We are not used to feel like we are in a stadium with tens of thousands of people around about us. But when you are out you have to immediately get into the starting focus, to see the boats all around you, to make the last call to the router. You need to switch quickly from one mode to another.”"

A sudden change of tide: The people who quit their day job to sail the world - CNN.com: "Hail stones the size of fists pummel the small sailboat lurching violently in the Pacific Ocean. Blanketed in darkness, Nik Brbora desperately tries to steer his 18-strong crew through 50-knot hurricane winds and waves three-storeys high. As dawn approaches, a monster wave flips the yacht, ripping out the steering and smashing Brbora against the deck. Falling in and out of consciousness, the 29-year-old is rescued by U.S. coast guards who take him to the closest hospital -- 900 kilometers away in San Francisco. It's a terrifying and ultimately death-defying moment for the IT engineer from London. Yet now, as he looks back three months after completing the year-long Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, Brbora says the journey was also the greatest experience of his life. . . ."

BBC News - UK man awaits Pacific yacht rescue: "It is about 700km (434 miles) south-west of Tonga and 1,260km north-east of New Zealand, rescue co-ordinators said. The yacht, called Windigo, righted itself after being damaged on Wednesday but is taking on water and could sink. The 52-old-man and 43-year-old woman are understood to have mild to moderate head injuries. . . There are few vessels in the area, which has been affected by 75km/h winds. A message from an emergency beacon on the yacht was received on Wednesday at 18:30 New Zealand time (05:00 GMT). A freighter and a yacht are expected to reach the Windigo at 0100 on Friday, but no rescue would be attempted until daybreak, the Rescue Co-ordination Centre said."
