When the wind is strong as it was on this particular day, the wood creaks and beams bend. Exciting stuff and good fun to be a part of the old-timers crew

Dorade, a 52-foot wooden sailboat considered the forebear of modern racing yachts, captured the Los Angeles to Honolulu race this week, echoing its 1936 victory.--
77 Years Later, Yacht Repeats Win in Trans-Pacific Race - NYTimes.com: " . . . .What Jenner and the rest of Dorade’s crew learned on their two-week sojourn was that the genius of the boat’s design and how the sailors in the 1930s skillfully sailed her never go out of style. “It was definitely a new style of steering,” Jenner said. “Everything all of us know we had to forget and go to the old school type of sailing.” The crew watched old films of Olin Stephens steering a rocking and rolling Dorade in the 1931 Transatlantic and holding the tiller steady in the center of the boat. By the end of this Transpac, Jenner said, they were all steering the same way as Stephens. Brooks and the navigator Matt Wachowicz added to the historical realism by practicing celestial navigation all the way to Hawaii. . . ." (read more at link above)

A lesson on sailing, south of Boston - South - The Boston Globe: " . . . the relationship between the wind and the sail. “That is always the hardest thing to teach,” says Leonard. “But as you watch someone learn to move the tiller and the boat and sail move, then they learn to move the sail correctly and you see they suddenly get it. That moment when they first do get it, that’s a lot of fun.” Tom Gosselin, a 65-year-old Duxbury resident, said: “The feeling of the natural forces around you and learning to respond to the wind is just amazing. To do this later in life, I think you have a great appreciation for the beauty, and the interaction with the wind, sea, sun clouds, and the total silence. Just amazing. “You learn to respond to the natural forces that move the boat and your spirit at the same time.” He has had two lessons thus far and is working to become certifield to solo. The Duxbury program allows sailors, once they demonstrate basic skills, to use available boats for up to two-hour sails in Duxbury Bay. The entire season-long program costs $525. . . ."

2013 America's Cup features new evolution in yacht racing | abc7news.com: " . . . . Way back in the dark ages, America's Cup boats were monohulls, and the guys in the back of the boat looked older and heavier -- they were the brain trust. Emirates Team New Zealand, Louis Vuitton Cup finalist (video)

News: Emirates Team New Zealand clinches Louis Vuitton Cup round robin: Emirates Team New Zealand has clinched the top spot in the Round Robin of the Louis Vuitton Cup, the America's Cup Challenger Series. The New Zealand team, led by skipper Dean Barker, completed today's 15.43-nautical-mile course in 46 minutes, 53 seconds and finished more than 7 minutes ahead of Luna Rossa. The Italian team was scored DNF for failing to finish within 5 minutes. The Kiwis have amassed 7 points and have three races remaining in the challengers' series, but can't be overcome. In winning the round robin they've earned the right to advance straight to the Louis Vuitton Cup Final or choose their opponent for the semifinal round. As yet, the team hasn't announced its intention other than to say that it plans to sail its next scheduled races on Saturday and Sunday.

America's Cup: New Zealand team beats Italy, but are Kiwis faster than Oracle Team USA? - San Jose Mercury News: " Emirates Team New Zealand flashed its undisputed dominance in the America's Cup racing series again Tuesday, handily beating Italy's Luna Rossa for the third straight race and clinching the top spot in the challenger trials. But the looming question remains: Are the Kiwis fast enough to win when it really counts? Or, perhaps more intriguingly, is defending champion Oracle Team USA fast enough to beat New Zealand, its most likely opponent in the America's Cup finals? "That's the joy of the America's Cup," commentator Andy Green told the crowd gathered at the finish line along America's Cup Park at Pier 27/29. "Is the defender as fast as the fastest challenger?". . . ."

Artemis Racing launches AC72 at base in Alameda

America's Cup: Has world-renowned regatta become a gladiator sport? - San Jose Mercury News: "Gasps of surprise and worry rumbled across the Embarcadero when a front sail on the New Zealand boat came crashing down onto the trampoline deck of the 72-foot catamaran before the crew cut it loose and sent the rumpled sail drifting into the bay. It was a spectacle one commentator called an "emergency on Planet Kiwi." Emirates Team New Zealand recovered quickly and still managed to beat Italy's Luna Rossa by more than two minutes, its second victory this month. But the crowd . . . seemed to relish Sunday's accident, which ripped the jib off the front of the boat. . . . 11-year-old Wilson Conn, of Atherton, who watched with his two brothers and parents, had one thing on his mind: "I want to see if it capsizes.". . ."
