Extreme Sailing Series 2014 Videos, Results, Alinghi Champion

Extreme Sailing Series™ 2014 highlights video above.
Sydney, Australia hosted the grand final to the 2014 Extreme Sailing Series™ which has been one of the most competitive and exciting to date. Over 11 months of global touring, from Asia to the Middle East, Europe to Australia, the best in the sport went head to head in one of the toughest events in professional sailing - but this is a level playing field. With new teams joining the line up the expectations were huge, everyone had a point to make, and the stakes were high.

Extreme Sailing Series™ Act 8 Sydney presented by Land Rover in 90 seconds--Act 8 Sydney presented by Land Rover has delivered in spades for the final Act of the global tour, with the best racing of the year - and some of the most memorable in the Series' eight-year history. Watch a 90 second snap shot of the highlights above.

Olympic champion Nathan Wilmot and his team on GAC Pindar had their regatta cut short on the final day of racing in at Act 8 Sydney presented by Land Rover, following a collision with Realteam. The Aussie's were overtaking Realteam on the downwind leg and attempted to bear down in front of her as she passed, misjudged it and got their port rudder knocked off, leaving them without steering and no control of the boat. Watch the capsize above.

Extreme Sailing Series: Alinghi crowned 2014 (and Sydney) champion in the best day’s racing of the year--"It is mission accomplished for Ernesto Bertarelli’s Swiss team Alinghi, as Morgan Larson and the team grabbed victory with both hands at Act 8 Sydney, and with it the 2014 Extreme Sailing Series™ title – and Larson’s words say it all: “We’ve had an amazing season with an amazing team. To win the season and the Act on the last day in the conditions we had here in Sydney, which is the best sailing venue in the world, is a special moment that’s going to take a long time to sink in. The level of confidence that we have on our boat just made me realise I can win anything with these guys. This is the best feeling I’ve had all year and probably in the whole of my sailing career, so I’m going to cherish it.”... (read more at the link above)"

Cup teams already plotting course to victory - 35th America's Cup: "... Speaking to a home audience, Ben Ainslie told the media his team would draw on a combination of youth and experience in building a British challenger. “We’re putting together a predominantly British sailing team, a mix of experience with guys who have been there and won the Cup a few times as well as some younger, homegrown talent that is coming through. If we were going racing tomorrow, I would be steering the boat, but that might not be the same answer in a few years time.”..."

Sir Ben Ainslie says 2017 America’s Cup could be the most competitive | Sport | The Guardian: "Sir Ben Ainslie claimed the 2017 America’s Cup could be the most competitive in history as the four-times Olympic sailing champion confirmed he intends to helm a team that is targeting a first British title. No criminal charges in America's Cup fatal capsize - ESPN: "... According to the report, Artemis Racing designer Adam May told a police officer after the accident on May 9, 2013, that the 72-foot catamaran had just performed a bear-away maneuver on San Francisco Bay "when the port side hull dug into the water and failed structurally. This hull failure caused the vessel to capsize and come to rest with the platform inverted." Simpson, a gold and silver Olympic medalist, suffered extensive trauma to his head and neck and drowned after being trapped underwater for about 10 minutes, according to the autopsy report. There were serious cuts and bruises to Simpson's head and neck, and foam inside his crash helmet "was irregularly separated consistent with being crushed," the report said. The cause of death was listed as "blunt trauma with drowning." "There were no criminal charges in this case. The investigation is closed," Officer Albie Esparza, a San Francisco police department spokesman, said Tuesday...."

Small breeze & big tactics takes The Wave, Muscat into pole position ahead of final Cardiff showdown » Extreme Sailing Series:What a difference a day makes. If Saturday’s Extreme 40 racing on Cardiff Bay was all about power, Sunday was about tactics and finesse, with light breeze dancing across the bay, at Act 5 of the Extreme Sailing Series™ presented by Land Rover. Just five points scoring races were added to the tally – but five all important leaderboard changing races - with the pressure piling on the teams to lay down a strong performance ahead of Monday's final day. One team with huge pressure on their shoulders in Cardiff is The Wave, Muscat, who need an Act win here to keep in touch with the top of the overall Series leaderboard and skipper Leigh McMillan more than rose to the challenge, adding 33 points to their score to overhaul Alinghi, and lead the pack for the first time, heading into today's racing.
