2016 Vendée Globe route
2016 Vendée Globe route
The Vendée Globe involves sailing around the world alone, without stopping and without assistance, setting sail from and finishing in Les Sables d’Olonne, after rounding the three legendary capes: The Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, Cape Leeuwin in Southern Australia and the infamous Cape Horn at the tip of South America. Sailing twice in the North and South Atlantic – on the way down and on the way back – and sailing around Antarctica by crossing the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Like many other major international sporting events (the Olympics, World Cup, etc) it has been organised every four years since 1989. This event combines human endeavour and technology, and is raced on 60-foot monohulls (18.28 m), IMOCA boats. The Vendée Globe race record is held by François Gabart, who finished after 78 days. The eighth Vendée Globe will begin from Les Sables d’Olonne on Sunday 6th November 2016. More info: vendeeglobe.org

New York – Vendée (Les Sables d’Olonne): a challenging final trial run before the Vendée Globe. Setting sail from the ‘Big Apple’, bound for what was the cradle of the IMOCA Class, the port of Les Sables d’Olonne, one could hardly ask for more in terms of symbolism. On the one hand, New York, a cosmopolitan crossroads of influences, is a perfect illustration of the international aspirations of both IMOCA and Open Sports Management. On the other, France’s Vendée region, represents the heart of the IMOCA class, thanks to its legendary solo round the world race, in which some of the most extraordinary episodes on the high seas have occurred over the last twenty-five years. The final opportunity to qualify for the Vendée Globe in race configuration, the New York – Vendée (Les Sables d’Olonne) promises to be a significant event in the IMOCA Ocean Masters Championship. Above all, the New York – Vendée will be the final major confrontation in singlehanded configuration before to the ultimate event in the IMOCA Ocean Masters World Championship 2015- 2016.
