Kuka 3 finished the race 06 Dec 2018 for an apparent 1st in IRC overall.

2018 RORC Transatlantic Race Kuka 3 finish video above. Franco Niggeler's Swiss Cookson 50 Kuka3, skippered by Chuny Bermudez, overcame technical issues and a fire on board to post the best IRC corrected time, so far in the RORC Transatlantic Race. After over 12 days of racing in the Atlantic Ocean, the crew looked tired but elated to arribe at Camper and Nicholsons PortLouis Marina.

Kuka3 RORC Transatlantic Race on Thursday 06 December, 2018 at 17:34:35 UTC in an elapsed time of 12 days 5 hrs 34 mins and 35 secs. Kuka3 was the second yacht racing under IRC to finish the race, after Pier Luigi Loro Piana's Supermaxi My Song. Kuka3 has set the best time after IRC correction and is in a very strong position to win the race overall and lift the RORC Transatlantic Race Trophy.

After finishing the RORC Transatlantic Race Kuka3 was safely moored at Camper and Nicholsons Port Louis Marina, where manager Charlotte Bonin and staff cracked open iced cold beers for the Kuka3 team. Chinel Sandy from the Grenada Tourism Board presented Franco Niggeler with
with a basket of Grenadian goods, including chocolate, local spices and condiments. After 12 days of freeze dried cuisine the warm welcome was very much appreciated! RORC Race Officer Steve Cole was on hand to congratulate Kuka3 for finishing the race.

“It was hard especially with the problems at the beginning but it was a beautiful race and we are happy to be here.” commented Kuka3 owner Franco Niggeler.  “The Kuka crew has been fantastic, we have a great leader in Chuny (Bermudez) and he has formed us into a team, we are growing together with his guidance. When things did not go well for us it simply comes down to is simple; you have to fight, try harder and you can overcome the problems. The first beer in Grenada tastes really good especially after drinking warm desalinated water for 12 days.”

“Franco is incredible, he probably was driving the boat more than anyone else for the race, and he is always keen to learn, and that is so important for Franco and for all of the team, especially that he is also very happy.” commented Kuka3 skipper Chuny Bermudez. “It was an interesting race and our first as a team offshore. I was really impressed with the guys, especially as some of them are a bit new to offshore racing. I provide the boundaries and they performed well even when we had our problems. The pitstop in Cape Verde was like a formula one, very fast, just four hours to change batteries and a few cables. Five days before the finish we also had a fire on board, which we dealt with very well, everybody went straight up on deck and we used the correct extinguisher. However we were without communication for days and it was a really big test for us.”

04 Dec 2018: Supermaxi My Song finished at 04 Dec 2018 17:47 UTC, 1st in Line Honours Monohull, setting new monohull race record.

01 Dec 2018: Multihull Line Honours for Maserati Multi 70 - PowerPlay close behind:on 1 December 2018 at 06:54:34 UTC, Giovanni Soldini's Italian Multi 70 Maserati was the first to cross the line in Grenada, taking multihull line honours to finish the 5th edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race. The team completed the 3,000 mile race between Lanzarote and Grenada in an elapsed time of 6 days, 18 hours, 54 minutes and 34 seconds. They were closely followed by Peter Cunningham's MOD70 PowerPlay, who crossed the finish line off Port Louis at 07:40:12, after an Atlantic duel between the two mighty trimarans.

PowerPlay | RORC Transatlantic Race Start 2018

The fifth edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race started on schedule at 1200 UTC on Saturday 24 November. The fleet bid farewell to Marina Lanzarote which had once again provided an ideal location to prepare for the 3,000 nautical mile race to Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina Grenada.

“The fleet got away to a clean start,” commented RORC Deputy Racing Manager, Tim Thubron. “Kuka 3 was first over the line, followed by Class40 Hydra and the two multihulls; PowerPlay and Maserati. My Song held back at the start but was at speed and full upwind mode at the pin, soon leaving the rest of the monohulls in their wind shadow.”

The expected light airs start was enhanced by a sea breeze with many of the teams electing to stay inshore to gain lifting pressure rolling down the volcanic landscape of Lanzarote. Pier Luigi Loro Piana's Supermaxi My Song was the first boat to the turning mark at Puerto Calero Marina, followed by the multihulls.

Peter Cunningham's MOD70 PowerPlay took first blood in the duel with Giovanni Soldini's Maserati Multi 70. PowerPlay led at the turning mark by several boat lengths. Both trimarans were still able to fly a hull in the light pressure, and no doubt the duel across the Canary Islands will be the next phase of the battle to Grenada.

Franco Niggeler's Swiss Cookson 50 Kuka 3 was going well, second on the water in the IRC class behind My Song. Arto Linnervuo's Finnish Xp-44 Xtra Staerk made a cracking start, beating all three Class40s to the turning mark at Puerto Calero.

In the Class40 division, Henrik Bergesen's Norwegian flagged Hydra was first to the mark, just ahead of French skipper Catherine Pourre, racing Eärendil. Stephane Bry's French-Finnish corinthian team racing Sirius was some way behind the leaders, but all set for a 'tick the box' adventure.

Trevor Middleton's British Sun Fast 3600 Black Sheep got away well, the smallest yacht in the race has a crew of five and a massive fan club back home, especially from Yorkshire, Trevor's home county. The amateur crew racing First 47.7 Kali is skippered for the first time by Corinne Wirth. Representing the Swiss Ocean Racing Club, the team are indicative of the ethos of the race. Sail safe and fast!

My Song was making good speed in the light winds leading the monohull fleet, with Kuka 3 six miles astern. Class40s Eärendil and Hydra were side-by-side matched for speed. The entire fleet are heading north above all of the Canary Islands avoiding the wind shadow from the islands. With the ridge of high pressure predicted to provide light winds, the overall strategy for all of the competing yachts will be to stay in the best pressure during the first night.

Finnish Xp-44 Xtra Staerk was still ahead of the Class40s at 1800 UTC and skipper Arto Linnervuo commented from on board;

We had light winds at the start and inshore it was very shifty, so we had to concentrate on keeping the right side of that. We have now seen the wind go to the south and increase a little to about 11 knots. The spirit on board is fantastic and we are so happy to start this race. We are living our dream and we have such interesting boats and sailors to compete with. As the sun goes down, we can feel the chill in the air, but we are dreaming of getting south into warm trade winds and what promises to be fantastic sailing conditions.”

RC44 Calero Marinas Cup 2018, March 1-4 LIVE Feed & Video

The best of the RC44 Calero Marinas Cup 2018

RC44 Class Association video published Mar 4, 2018: Lanzarote has delivered outstanding winter racing for this year's RC44 Calero Marinas Cup. From 20+ knots of boat speed blasting downwind in training to champagne sailing in 15 knots for the final day.

Day 4 RC44 Calero Marinas Cup - Charisma secures victory as RC44 racing goes to the wire

RC44 Class Association video published Mar 4, 2018: Nico Poons’ Charisma proved today that there is a new player in town in the one design fleet, as they clung on to their lead from yesterday to win the RC44 Calero Marinas Cup, the opening event of the 2018 RC44 championship. But it came down to the last run of today’s last race when a final curved ball cut the Monaco-based team’s overall lead to just one point ahead of arch-rival, Team Nika.

After their outstanding Saturday, defending 2017 RC44 champions Igor Lah’s Team CEEREF were still in the groove and led today’s opening race from start to finish.

After posting a couple of deep results, Vladimir Prosikhin 's Team Nika was back on song for race two. The Russian team and John Bassadone’s Peninsula Petroleum opted early for the right on the first beat where they struck gold. The two boats were respectively first and second at the top mark, positions they maintained until the finish.

UPDATE Mar 4, 2018: Charisma held a five points advantage over Team Nika, with Artemis Racing a further three points back going into the final day of racing on Sunday. Charisma held on to win.the RC44 Calero Marinas Cup 2018 on Sunday, a well-deserved win for Nico Poons, Ray Davies and the entire crew after a week-long battle with Team Nika.

RC44 Calero Marinas Cup 2018 overall ranking
1. Charisma-36
2. Nika-37
3. CEEREF-40
4. Artemis-47
5. Aqua-55
6. Peninsula-58
7. Aleph-68

Next RC44 event: RC44 Portorož Cup, May 9-13, 2018.

Day 3 RC44 Calero Marinas Cup - Charisma strides ahead after challenging day

RC44 Class Association video published Mar 3, 2018: A North Atlantic cold front, threatening to wreak havoc over Lanzarote, provided Solent-like conditions for the opening race on day three of the RC44 Calero Marinas Cup, the first event of the 2018 RC44 championship. Fortunately, once the front had passed, the wind veered back into the south, the sun came out allowing all the teams to enjoy another memorable afternoon of racing.

Day 2 RC44 Calero Marinas Cup - Too close to call at the halfway stage in Lanzarote

RC44 Class Association video above published Mar 2, 2018: Lanzarote laid on superb conditions for day two of the RC44 Calero Marinas Cup under brilliant sunshine and winds that started in the sub-10 range before building solidly into the 20s, making for a spectacular action-packed third and final race.

Torbjörn Törnqvist’s Artemis Racing claimed the opening race after tactician Andy Horton correctly called the favourable left side of the course, just as he did in yesterday’s first race.

Conditions had built for race two which turned into a heavyweight bout between Vladimir Prosikhin’s Team Nika and Nico Poons’ Charisma. Nika led around the first lap but Charisma had edged ahead by the end of the second beat and maintained their lead to the finish. Pundits noted that the match racing between the two boats may have been fuelled by some rivalry between the tacticians– former Emirates Team New Zealand skipper Dean Barker calling the shots on Team Nika and his former tactician Ray Davies in this position on Charisma.

Day 1 RC44 Calero Marinas Cup - Three races and three winners fire up 2018

RC44ClassAssociation video above published Mar 1, 2018: The opening day of the 2018 RC44 Calero Marinas Cup indicated firstly how close the season for the Russell Coutts-inspired one designs is set to be and how to win, it will be vital to make zero mistakes.

Three races saw three different winners. Torbjörn Törnqvist and Artemis Racing romped away to claim race one. Next up it was the turn of Vladimir Prosikhin’s Team Nika to take race two. This left the sole Russian team now competing on the RC44 circuit ahead overall going into the final race. Sadly, while they were second at the first top mark rounding on the transom of John Bassadone’s Peninsula Petroleum, a ripped gennaker put paid to Team Nika’s chances and lost her the overall lead at the close of play on this opening day to Peninsula Petroleum.

Interview: Nico Poons and Ray Davies

RORC Transatlantic Race LIVE Feed, CQS Line Honors Finish Dec 6

UPDATE 13 December 2017: Eric de Turckheim's French Nivelt-Muratet 54 Teasing Machine is the overall winner of the 2017 RORC Transatlantic Race. Whilst many of the record 23 yacht fleet are still racing, none of them can better Teasing Machine's corrected time under IRC. Teasing Machine is the smallest yacht to win the RORC Transatlantic Trophy which has been previously won by yachts in the Maxi Class.

10 Dec 2017: Roman Guerra's Volvo 70 Monster Project finished the 2017 RORC Transatlantic Race on Sunday 10 December 2017 in an elapsed time of 14 days 21 hrs 39 mins 46 secs. Sixteen yachts are still racing across the Atlantic Ocean and a number of teams will finish the 3,000 nautical mile race over the next 48 hours.

Day 15 1000 UTC 9 December 2017: Eric de Turckheim's French Nivelt-Muratet 54 Teasing Machine finished the 2017 RORC Transatlantic Race on Friday 8 December in an elapsed time of 13 days 19 hrs 29 mins 08 secs. The French team lead the race overall after IRC time correction. Canadian Southern Wind 96 Sorceress, skippered by Daniel Stump and Tilmar Hansen's German Elliot 52 Outsider have also finished the RORC Transatlantic Race. 17 yachts are still at sea, vying for the finish line outside Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina in Grenada. Teasing Machine arrived at sunset on the 14th day of the race and has one hand on the RORC Transatlantic Race Trophy. The team cheered for joy as they crossed the finish line. "We are very happy to be here in Grenada," smiled Eric de Turckheim. "This is my first transatlantic race and it has been fantastic."

09 Dec 2017 21:00 UTC LIVE Tracker:
06 Dec: Ludde Ingvall's Australian Maxi CQS finished the 2017 RORC Transatlantic Race on Wednesday 6th December taking Monohull Line Honours in an elapsed time of 11 days 00 hrs 03 mins 08 secs. CQS committed to a southerly route for the 3,000 nautical mile race and despite sustaining sail damage in a vicious 40 knot squall, the canting keel 98ft Maxi led from start to finish. Ingvall is no stranger to taking line honours in prestigious offshore races, twice taking the honour in both the Rolex Fastnet Race and the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. This was Ludde Ingvall's 16th transatlantic. Once dockside at Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina, Ingvall was full of enthusiasm for the RORC Transatlantic Race and his team:
"We have had a fantastic trip, even though the slow start meant we didn't have a fast race, but I love it. It is great to be back in the Atlantic and especially nice to be first. Much more fun than being last! We have a young crew on board and it is especially rewarding to give them this chance and 'pass it on'. Sailing is an amazing sport, but big boat opportunities for young sailors are few and they did really well. Just think, we have eight nationalities on one boat and everybody was focused on the same finish line. We worked as a team, looked after each other and it was tough at times."
CQS Crew: Skipper Ludde Ingvall; Co-Skipper Kenneth Thelen; Logan Andresen; Martyn Baker; Philip Barnard; Hans-Christoph Brumberg; Charles Egerton-Warburton; Robin Elsey; James Espey; Liam Gardner; Paul Heyrman; David Kenefick; Rokas Milevicius; James Oxenham; Malcolm Paine and James Tomlinson.

Marten 72 Aragon, skippered by Jochen Bovenkamp and Canadian Southern Wind 96 Sorceress, skippered by Daniel Stump are likely to be the next yachts to finish. The Maxis have close company from two high-performance offshore racing yachts, Tilmar Hansen's German Elliott 52 Outsider and the provisional overall leader, Eric de Turckheim's French Nivelt-Muratet 54 Teasing Machine. All four yachts are expected to finish the 2017 RORC Transatlantic Race on Friday 8th December.

05 Dec: Ludde Ingvall's Maxi CQS is expected to finish the 4th edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race Wednesday, and the overall leader under IRC, Eric de Turckheim's French Teasing Machine, is under threat from two Maxis. Everyone is keeping a close eye on the race tracker as the fleet near Grenada; especially as a high pressure system is expected to create another conundrum for the majority of the fleet. As dawn broke on the eleventh day of the 2017 RORC Transatlantic Race, Ludde Ingvall's Australian Maxi CQS was under 300 miles from taking monohull line honours and lifting the IMA Transatlantic Trophy. CQS suffered damage to their mainsail during a knockdown in heavy weather and has one big gybe remaining before pointing their bow at Grenada and the finish. CQS is reaching at top speed and expected to finish at approximately midday local time on December 6th. A warm welcome is waiting for them at Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina.

05 Dec 2017 04:00 UTC: Supermaxi CQS AUS11111 Speed: 15.6 knots @ 277.91°; Skipper: Ludde Ingvall; DTF (Distance to Finish): 447.2 NM; Distance last 24hrs: 308 Nautical Miles (NM).

04 Dec 2017 17:00 UTC--CQS Recovers From Knockdown--Ludde Ingvall's CQS is now back on track after suffering a setback in the RORC Transatlantic Race; the westbound leg of the Atlantic Anniversary Regatta. "We got caught in a bad squall of probably 40 knots which resulted in a number of issues," Ingvall reported from on board on day 10 of the race. "There has been damage to sails and onboard electronic systems, but we are still progressing towards the finish." Kenneth Thelen, co-skipper for Australian Maxi CQS confirmed that all of the crew of the 96ft canting keel Maxi were safe and well. Describing the damage he said: "Part of our electronics failed making it hard to sail in the dark. We blew our biggest spinnaker, but it is repairable. As we went into a gybe, the engine stalled and we lay flat on our side for a while which resulted in a diesel spill inside the boat, so the smell is terrible in the heat! We broke the top three battens in the mainsail, but we are still sailing towards the finish at reasonable speed, in pouring rain. We will assess the situation at first light." At 1100 UTC on December 4th, the race tracker showed that CQS had slowed down to barely a few knots of boat speed to effect repairs. "We are back on track," continued Ingvall. We lost about six hours while sailing slowly and then stopped to repair probably at 90-95%, but we are now doing 14-15 knots average with G1 and a full main." At the time of the incident CQS was more than 400 nautical miles ahead of Jochen Bovenkamp's Dutch Marten 72 Aragon and Southernwind 96 Sorceress, skippered by Daniel Stump. CQS are fighting all the way to hold onto their grip on the IMA Transatlantic Race Trophy. Eric de Turckheim's French Nivelt-Muratet 54 Teasing Machine leads overall after IRC time correction and the majority of the record fleet are reaching at double-digit boat speed towards the finish at Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina, Grenada.

04 Dec 2017 02:00 UTC: Ludde Ingvall's Australian Maxi CQS is less than 800 nautical miles from Camper & Nicholson's Port Louis Marina, 400+ miles ahead of the fleet to take Monohull Line Honours and the IMA Transatlantic Trophy. Eric de Turckheim's French Nivelt-Muratet 54 Teasing Machine is still the provisional leader overall under IRC. However four other teams are also in the hunt for the RORC Transatlantic Race Trophy; CQS, Jochen Bovenkamp's Marten 72 Aragon, Teichmann & Thomas Jungblut's German Elliott 52 Outsider, and Canadian Southernwind 96 Sorceress, skippered by Daniel Stump. CQS has been hitting over 20 knots of boat speed, surfing down Atlantic rollers, but it has not all been plane sailing as their blog shows. "The A2 spinnaker had been up for four days during the RORC Transatlantic Race when a two foot tear appeared during a gybe. A4 hoisted, A2 doused, repaired, repacked and hoisted. Total time 90 minutes. All 15 crew working flat out. Now that's what I call teamwork!" (2 gray vessels in front in the screenshot show projected positions of two classes' all-time record holders from prior years).

Dec 1, 01:00 UTC: a huge spread in the fleet, with boats 800 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, north to south. Ludde Ingvall's Australian Maxi CQS leads the fleet, gybing further south last night and under 2,000 miles from the finish at Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina, Grenada. CQS is 186 miles ahead of Canadian 96ft Southern Wind Sorceress in the battle to win the International Maxi Association (IMA) Transatlantic Trophy for monohull line honors.

2017 RORC Transatlantic Race video JANGADA RICHARD PALMER | YouTube.com: RORC published on Nov 30, 2017, a sat. phone interview (video) of Richard Palmer racing British JPK 10.10 Jangada Two Handed on Day 6 of the 2017 RORC Transatlantic Race.

Nov 29: Maxi CQS sailing away on the southern route appears headed for line honours while the majority of the fleet have yet to cross the long ridge of high pressure extending from the Canary Islands across the Atlantic to reach the northeast tradewinds. Tactical decisions over the next day or two in this 3,000 mile offshore race may determine the final finish positions.

Nov 28, 2017: Varuna retires from the RORC Transatlantic Race while Ludde Ingvall's Maxi CQS made short work of the transition zone to the south of the rhumb line, slowing down for just four hours before reaching fresh breeze from the north east. At 0900 GMT the third day of the race, the Australian 98ft canting maxi was enjoying downwind conditions in a moderate breeze, gybing to keep in the best pressure--rorctransatlantic.rorc.org.

RORC Transatlantic Race and Atlantic Anniversary Regatta routes
The fourth edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race will start from Marina Lanzarote on 25th November 2017, bound for Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina, Grenada. The IMA Transatlantic Trophy will be awarded to the first monohull to complete the race and three powerful Maxi yachts can be considered favourites for the prestigious trophy: CQS, Sorceress and Monster Project are all very capable of beating the race record set in 2015 by Jean Paul Riviere's Nomad IV of 10 days 07 hours 06 minutes and 59 seconds.

By contrast, Jangada is the smallest yacht in the 2017 RORC Transatlantic Race. At just 33ft (10.10 metres) and sailing Two Handed, it is estimated that Jangada will take 19 days to complete the 2,995 nautical mile race.

Ludde Ingvall's 98ft Maxi CQS from Australia is a front-runner to take Line Honours in the RORC Transatlantic Race. Ingvall has thousands of racing miles under his belt, notching up 15 transatlantic crossings; his most famous Transatlantic Race was in 1997. As skipper of Nicorette, Ingvall broke the 92-year old record set in 1905 by Charlie Barr's Atlantic.

"When you are a young kid dreaming of racing, the Transatlantic Race is a very special one. I have enjoyed them all; it is a great adventure and very historic. You become part of something that has been going on for hundreds of years. To share that experience with your crew and other boats is really unique, and I feel very privileged to be doing this race," explains Ingvall. "For this race we have a rather young crew. Many will be crossing the Atlantic for the first time and they are excited to race in an organised fashion."

RC44 Virgin Gorda Cup, RORC Transatlantic Updates, Sailing Videos

Day 2 Fleet Racing - RC44 Virgin Gorda Cup: Despite the wind gods repeatedly throwing curve balls at competitors, Torbjörn Törnqvist and his Artemis Racing crew firmly consolidated their lead in the RC44 Virgin Gorda Cup regatta today. The Swedish team led going into the day and promptly won the opening two races and followed this up with a 6-2, making them top scoring boat of the day, eight points clear of Vladimir Liubomirov's Bronenosec Sailing Team in second overall. Bronenosec Sailing Team survived best in race three when a small squall passed through North Sound. Now second, while Vladimir Prosikhin's Team Nika has dropped to fourth, Bronenosec is currently favourite to win the overall RC44 Fleet Racing championship. John Bassadone's Peninsula Petroleum finally came good in the last race, while a solid 2-2-1 in the final three races elevated the Gibraltar-based team to third overall. Published Nov 28, 2015. Regatta cancelled after shipping blunder | The Royal Gazette:Bermuda Sailing: "The Flying Phantom Series finale has been cancelled. The regatta featuring 18-foot foiling catamarans, which was scheduled to take place on the Great Sound next week, was supposed to start on Sunday. However, the start was postponed after a container housing ten Phantom catamarans from Europe arrived on the Island on November 16 on the Oleander cargo ship, but was mistakenly then shipped to New York the following day. Despite efforts to salvage the event, including having the boats returned to the Island by Monday, the decision has been made to cancel the regatta."
