The Transat, World’s Oldest Single-handed Sailing Race (video)

The Transat (sailing video above)-- One man, one boat, the Ocean: The Transat is the Mother of all single-handed ocean races; the original contest that pits one sailor and one boat against the sea. This race launched professional offshore sailing as we now know it. Upwind, into the ice & fog - The Transat is still considered as one of the hardest of all ocean races.

THE TRANSAT RETURNS FOR 2016 AND HEADS TO NEW YORK | News | The Transat: "Classes invited to take part in 2016 edition include Class 40 monohulls (40ft) and Multi 50 multihulls (50ft). Alongside them will be the IMOCA 60 Class (60ft), the world’s leading solo class, many of which will go on to contest the 2016 Vendée Globe non-stop solo round world race, and what are likely to be the fastest entries, the Ultime multihulls, measuring anything from 60ft." The 2016 Edition of the Transat is set to begin May 2, 2016, from Plymouth, England and finish off Manhattan, New York.

News | The Transat: "The Transat, the first and oldest single-handed trans-ocean race in history, is heading to New York City and will culminate at the new ONE°15 Brooklyn Marina, race organisers and rights holders OC Sport, announced today. The marina will be an Official Host Venue Partner to the race alongside Plymouth, UK and is located in the heart of Brooklyn Bridge Park opposite Manhattan. It’s the newest marina to be built in New York City in decades and is currently under construction with a grand opening set for Spring 2016 to be marked by this iconic and exciting race."

History | The Transat: "Year 1960: The Transat began life when a handful of British sailors made a bet to see if they could sail across the Atlantic to America single-handed and who could do it the fastest. Among them were Sir Francis Chichester and Blondie Hasler... 5 entrants total; Winning Skipper: Francis Chichester, Gypsy Moth; winning time: 40 days 12 hours 30 minutes."

ISAF Sailing World Cup – Abu Dhabi:
All ten Olympic sailing events will be contested in Abu Dhabi from 27 October to 1 November, with an open kiteboarding event joining the fray around Lulu Island off the UAE capital's stunning Corniche. With just 20 boats in each event the competition is set to be fierce. The ten Olympic events will contest an opening series and a Medal Race with the kiteboard fleet using a short track format.

Leg 2 Final Stint | Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 -
This is it! The Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15, Leg 2 is coming to an end. With just a few hours to go it seems like a three-way battle for first between Team Brunel, Dongfeng Race Team and Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing.

"... At the end of November, ten days into the race’s second leg—a three-and-a-half-week-long sail from Cape Town, South Africa, to Abu Dhabi—Team Vestas Wind, sponsored by a Danish wind-energy company, was in fifth place among the seven-boat fleet. The six-million-dollar, sixty-five-foot sloop was skippered by Chris Nicholson, a forty-five-year-old Australian with four Volvo races under his belt. It was moving nineteen knots shortly after sunset (7:10P.M. local time) on November 29th when it slammed into a coral reef, part of an archipelago named St. Brandon, two hundred and sixty-eight miles off the coast of Mauritius...."

Volvo Ocean Race: Dec 9, 2014 --There's no doubt, it's a three horse race to Abu Dhabi.

Distance is relative | Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015: "... The Dutch boat [Team Brunel] is seriously heeling: the leaders are enjoying a good northeasterly breeze and Dongfeng are seven miles behind. But they know it may not last. “We’re going to have less wind and we’re going to hit it first,” adds Gerd-Jan. He opens his hands. “Basically, this is 15 miles. When we’ll arrive in the channel, the others will get closer because they’ll keep the wind longer and we’ll go slower.”..."

The homestretch to the end of Leg 2 is getting closer. And the word "home" takes a special meaning for the Emirati sailor Adil on Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. Dec 10, 2014

2014 RC44 Grand Final, Oman, Nov 19-23 (video)

2014 RC44 Championship Tour Promo

Since its launch in 2007, the RC44 Championship Tour has established itself as a key series to compete on in the international yacht racing circuit. The defining spirit of the Tour brings together the worlds of sailing and business, allowing amateur owner drivers to race, high performance one-design yachts, with some of the world's elite sailors, competing at some of the most beautiful and diverse sailing venues around the world. Although one of most competitive classes on the international circuit, the RC44 class is also one of the most friendly and welcoming.

RC44 Grand Final Showdown in OmanThe closing event of the 2015 Championship Tour will play out from the 19th – 23rd of November at the RC44 Oman Cup, Muscat. Hosted by Oman Sail, the season finale promises to be a close one. With both the Match Racing and Fleet Racing titles up for grabs and the top three teams all within touching distance, the big question is can anyone topple Team Aqua, to break their three-year domination. The RC44 Oman Cup will kick off with a day of match racing, where either the professional tactician or owner can take the helm. The remaining four days will be fleet racing. Currently leading the fleet racing is three times defending champion, Chris Bake’s Aqua in their familiar spot. In the Match Racing, Team Aqua holds a slim one-point lead over the fleet. A strong match racing season for Synergy Russian Sailing Team, with America’s Cup veteran Ed Baird at the helm, puts them in second place. Two podium finishes this season for Vladimir Prosikhin ’s Team Nika sees them in third. Returning to the Arabian port of Muscat for the second consecutive year Oman offers crystal clear water and a prevailing north-easterly wind providing great sailing conditions to end the season. The RC44 Oman Cup will take place over 19 – 23 November.

The 40ft class is one of the most international in the four-yearly race, Briton Phil Sharp winning in 18 days in 2006. France's Thomas Ruyant was quicker when he won in 2010 in 17days 23hrs 10m but Pella should be around 16 and a half days..."
