Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race: "Signed, Sealed,  & Delivered This year's Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Race certainly lived up to the pre-race caveat of "Be Prepared."  The light VMG running of the past couple of years was a distant memory, as a stout northwesterly that built overnight brought the fleet down and around the curve in rapid fashion, but made them work hard for the quick trip. When they reached the island, a slew of familiar names graced the top of the leader board...." Race Results here

Fast start, but slow sailing to Key West

Spinnaker takedown onboard the J Class Yacht Hanuman (video)

Spinnaker takedown onboard the J Class Yacht Hanuman (video above)5 minute drill for a spinnaker take-down on a J Boat off of Newport Rhode Island 2009. Wind was 15-20knots from SW. Boatspeed was 12.5knots. Rain squalls threatened and spit . . . Temperature was 62 F. Dolphins danced off our bows briefly (not in this video). We were practicing maneuvers and testing sails onboard the J Class Yacht. Several new sails had been delivered and most of the crew was involved in making sure they fit properly and that the boat was set up properly to handle them. J Class Yachts were sailed before World War Two but have seen a resurgence as expressions of the beauty of sail. That said they are huge and must be handled carefully witness the way the bowman is whipped around like a rag doll when he release the A2 spinnaker tack.

The boats “suffered damage in what is reported as conditions of up to eight-meter (26-foot) swells and up to 60-knot gale-force winds,” the NSRI said...

Yachting: Cup challenge to be a snip at $80m - Sport - NZ Herald News: " . . . If OTUSA (Oracle Team USA) is sincere about keeping sport's oldest (and one of the most significant) sponsorships, it will need to produce more than the lame duck regatta of last time; Louis Vuitton are not known for backing lame ducks. That suggests cost reduction efforts will be genuinely pursued. Cost and Oracle's considerable technological lead and experience in giant multi-hulls were all factors in potential challengers dropping out last time - and Ellison will not want his credibility swamped again under a wave of no-shows"
