AMERICA'S CUP OPENING SKIPPERS PRESS CONFERENCE video above
Spithill: “We’re the underdogs” / America’s Cup: "“We’ve got four days to get organized,” Spithill said. “We’re going to get our two boats out there tomorrow (Wednesday). Now we know who we can sail with. We’ll probably sail one boat on Thursday and we’ll decide afterwards about whether we go out on Friday.” Spithill says this is a challenging situation for the defender, who now finds itself as the underdog. “There’s no question in my mind that Team New Zealand are the favourites here. We’re in an underdog position now,” he said."
International Jury decisions issued on ORACLE TEAM USA AC45 yachts / America’s Cup: "To win the America’s Cup, a team must score nine points, the highest ever number in the competition’s 162 year-old history. The defender now starts with a deficit score of minus-2 and must win 11 races to retain the trophy. Emirates Team New Zealand, the challenger, is unaffected and must win 9 races as before."
Oracle Down 2 Races Before America’s Cup Starts - NYTimes.com: Oracle Team USA will begin defense of the America’s Cup on Saturday with a two-race deficit after being penalized for prohibited modifications to its racing yachts in 2012. Oracle will begin the best-of-17 event with a score of minus 2. To capture the America’s Cup, Oracle will have to win 11 races. The challenger, Emirates Team New Zealand, will need to win 9 races. A five-member international America’s Cup jury also barred a veteran Oracle sailor, the wing trimmer Dirk de Ridder, and two shore team members from the race. Another team member was suspended for the first four races. The team was also fined $250,000.
Oracle hit with unprecedented penalties for America's Cup cheating | Reuters: "The Cup finals are a best-of-17 series, and Oracle will now enter the event two points behind: it will need to win 11 races to win the series, while New Zealand will only need to win 9. Oracle will also be sailing without a key crew member, Dirk de Ridder, a 40-year-old Dutchman who was banished from the event for his role in the weight scandal. Another Oracle sailor was suspended for the first 4 races, and two shore crew members were barred from any further participation."

Kiwis and Portuguese top the table at the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup / America’s Cup: "The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup provided thrills, spills and plenty of action over four days of intense competition on San Francisco Bay. On Wednesday, the New Zealand Sailing Team with Emirates Team New Zealand recovered from a poor start to beat their fierce rivals on Full Metal Jacket (NZL) and the ROFF/Cascais Sailing Team from Portugal to win the inaugural title. The leaderboard was tight, leading to tense moments on the final day. Just three points separated second from fifth place. When the Swiss Team TILT won race 7, they became the sixth different team to claim a race win in the regatta. Race 8 – which was to score double points – was cancelled with the winds on San Francisco Bay over the limit. . . ."

5 Teams Selected - RBYAC Selection Series - Five of the best youth sailing teams in the world have qualified for the Red Bull Youth America's Cup following a grueling two-week Selection Series in San Francisco. The 12 crews, from 11 countries, were pushed to the limit as they fought for the right to compete in September's races. National crews from Australia, Germany, New Zealand, Portugal and Switzerland, made the cut to advance to the Red Bull Youth America's Cup where they will meet five crews supported by current America's Cup teams. Double Olympic Gold medalists Roman Hagara and Hans-Peter Steinacher, the Sports Directors for the Red Bull Youth America's Cup, made the selections after closely monitoring the teams on and off the water during the two back-to-back selection weeks. With the high talent level and extreme motivation of the crews, there were hard choices to make.

Coast Guard searching for 2 adults, 2 children from sinking sailboat offshore from Santa Cruz - San Jose Mercury News: " . . . The U.S. Coast Guard was searching late Sunday for two adults and two children who had been aboard a sailboat that reportedly sank about 30 miles southwest of Santa Cruz. The boat was reported to be taking on water late Sunday afternoon, according to Petty Officer Sean McGinnis. Details were still sketchy Sunday evening. KTVU News reported that Coast Guard officials received a distress call at about 4:20 p.m. from someone aboard a 29-foot sailboat that was 65 miles offshore. The four people aboard told the Coast Guard they had to abandon ship at around 5:30 p.m. .. ."
Four people missing in sailboat mishap off northern California | Reuters: "The Coast Guard said in a statement that the four people from the missing vessel, believed to be named the Charmblow, might have made it into a makeshift life raft, but that their fate was not known. Local television station KTVU reported that victims lacked life rafts or survival suits and planned to tie a cooler and other materials together to give them a means of floatation until they could be rescued. Coast Guard aircraft and sea vessels conducted several searches of the area without success, and additional Coast Guard resources were to join in the operation, the agency said in its statement."

America's Cup amphitheater sails through - SFGate: "Normally, something as big and loud as a rock concert amphitheater would take months of public back and forth to win approval. That's why it's all the more amazing that the America's Cup and Live Nation landed permission for a 9,000-seat venue on San Francisco's waterfront without a single commission vote or hearing. "It's like it just fell out of the sky," said Jon Golinger, head of the Telegraph Hill Dwellers Association, whose members will be serenaded by as many as 40 outdoor shows this spring and summer. It didn't quite fall out of the sky, but it's close. America's Cup organizers originally had permission to build a 4,000-seat amphitheater on Piers 27-29 for opening and closing ceremonies and other events connected to this year's sailboat-racing competition."
America's Cup expedites overdue projects - SFGate: "The great thing about events like the America's Cup is that even if they flop, the long-term payoff for the host city can be rewarding. I refer not to the balance sheet at San Francisco's City Hall, but to civic improvements that in this case might not otherwise occur. These projects include a new cruise terminal and a more pedestrian-friendly Fisherman's Wharf. While they've been on the city's to-do list for ages, they became priorities in response to the hype surrounding a regatta that could draw hundreds of thousands of viewers for the final batch of high-profile yacht races on the bay. We'll see what happens now that only four yachts will compete in the series being held from July to September. Mayor Ed Lee's administration is scrambling to help raise $32 million so taxpayers won't be stuck with the tab for city services related to the event. But three infrastructure projects already are leaving their mark in ways that are long overdue. The cruise terminal is the most visible change, a long box of aluminum and glass that for now sits behind fences along the south edge of Pier 27. . . ."

Town boards recently approved $65,000 in funding to rebuild the structure, but this time it will be set on a foundation. It is expected that 75 percent of the cost will be reimbursed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency." more sailing news below

The first of two selection series for the Red Bull Youth America's Cup drew to a close today (Feb 16) with the teams from New Zealand, Full Metal Jacket Racing, and Germany, STG/NRV Youth Team, standing atop the fleet. That doesn't ensure the two teams will qualify for the Red Bull Youth America's Cup final in September because a second selection series for another six teams will be held next week. At least four teams will advance to the final, so it does give the two crews a leg up.The second selection series for the Red Bull Youth America's Cup begins Monday and concludes Sunday, Feb. 24.
