US Sailing Launches Educational REACH Program for Youth: "PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (November 28, 2012) – US Sailing, the national governing body of the sport, today announced the launch of the REACH Program, an initiative that utilizes sailing as a platform that enables middle school aged youth of all backgrounds to embrace education, establish a love of learning and explore productive Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) based careers. The REACH program connects educators, sailing instructors, engineers, scientists with today’s youth to provide them with a one of a kind authentic learning experience, giving students the opportunity to apply classroom learning in a cooperative work environment. The REACH program through the leadership of US Sailing provides resources, connections and national partnerships to support organizations, and individuals that utilize sailing as an educational tool connecting youth nationwide to the sport of sailing. US Sailing Executive Director Jack Gierhart said, "Sailing is a great platform for building self confidence and leadership and it’s a natural partnership with science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Community Sailing Centers are the perfect place to launch this type of programming. We’ve seen how successful they’ve been in working with people from all different backgrounds. That success, combined with the STEM specific focus of the REACH program, opens the door for a whole new educational opportunity.” . . . The modules tightly align with Common Core Standards and the K-12 Framework for Science Education for middle school students. Five programs across the nation administered the program during the fall of 2012, including Community Boating Center (RI), Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center (VT), Life Sail (CA), Edison Sailing Center (FL) and New England Science and Sailing (CT). Phase two will be project based, including a national competition engaging middle school students in the engineering by design process.  For more information on the REACH program, visit us at http://reach.ussailing.org/."

SAILING | Bulldogs finish in second | Yale Daily News: "While most Yale students were at the Game in Cambridge, the Yale sailing team was yet again contending for national recognition. From Nov. 16 through Nov. 18, the Yale coed sailing team competed at Eagle Mountain Lake in Fort Worth, Texas for the ICSA Match Racing National Championships and Cornelius Shields Sr. Trophy. The Bulldogs raced in J/22 boats, a 22-foot-long racer, and came out with a 4–5 record. Yale persevered and focused for the bracket sailing, winning a second-place finish. “We were able to keep our composure and recognized we were getting better as the event went on,” skipper Graham Landy ’15 said. The Elis struggled to produce the form that has earned them a No. 3 national ranking this year, but after tuning up during the round robin, the Bulldogs advanced along with five other schools — down from the original 10 — to the knockout rounds. In the quarterfinals, the Bulldogs were ranked as the fourth seed and took down the third seed University of South Florida in a best-of-three series. The semifinals put the Elis in a familiar situation, but with a twist. The Bulldogs now were facing Saint Mary’s College of Maryland, the number one seed, in a head-to-head showdown. At the ICSA National Championships, the Bulldogs were no longer racing in the familiar fleet style they have sailed so many times — they were racing one-on-one. . .
