2016 52 Super Series Highlights: Scarlino Cup, Day 4 & 5, Sailing Videos

2016 52 Super Series HIGHLIGHTS: Scarlino Cup Day 5:

The combination of a localised pressure system, a resulting thunderstorm, variable winds, a possible three-race-day, and a tight gap between the teams at the top made the last day of the regatta somewhat of a mystery. Quantum Racing took the glory with Alegre and Platoon hot on their heels going into Porto Cervo for the 2016 Audi Settimana delle Bocche. Racing starts again on 28th June 2016. Going into the final day of the 2016 Scarlino Cup, still anything could happen with only six points separating first-placed @Quantum Racing from third-placed @Alegre. Racing will start today at 12:05. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the very special interview at the end of this short clip. New York – Vendée (Les Sables d’Olonne): a challenging final trial run before the Vendée Globe. Setting sail from the ‘Big Apple’, bound for what was the cradle of the IMOCA Class, the port of Les Sables d’Olonne, one could hardly ask for more in terms of symbolism. On the one hand, New York, a cosmopolitan crossroads of influences, is a perfect illustration of the international aspirations of both IMOCA and Open Sports Management. On the other, France’s Vendée region, represents the heart of the IMOCA class, thanks to its legendary solo round the world race, in which some of the most extraordinary episodes on the high seas have occurred over the last twenty-five years. The final opportunity to qualify for the Vendée Globe in race configuration, the New York – Vendée (Les Sables d’Olonne) promises to be a significant event in the IMOCA Ocean Masters Championship. The first regatta will be held out of Fraglia Vela Riva located in Riva del Garda, in the lake’s northernmost corner. The club is a favourite championship venue, especially with dinghy and Olympic classes and last year alone hosted World Championships for the Cadet, Topper and Musto Performance Skiff classes.

RC44 Sotogrande World Championship, 11-15 May, Sailing Videos

UPDATE: Fleet racing day 4 - Team CEEREF wins RC44 World Championship in two horse race:

The RC44 World Championship Marina de Sotogrande had a worthy winner today in Igor Lah and his Team CEEREF crew, the second occasion the Slovenian team has claimed this prize. But this was only after some anxious moments off the Andalusian port, as Lah's crew slogged it out with local heroes, John Bassadone's Peninsula Petroleum from nearby Gibraltar. Published May 15, 2016

Fleet racing day 2 - Bassadone's Gibraltar greyhounds on the ascent:

For day three of the RC44 World Championship, Sotogrande laid on the conditions for which it is famous: brilliant sunshine, wind regularly over 20 knots, monster shifts, but surprisingly flat water in the lee of the Andalusian coast. Published on May 13, 2016

Fleet racing day 1 - Team CEEREF masters Atlantic winds:

After an awkward beginning to the regatta yesterday, the RC44 World Championship Marina de Sotogrande fleet racing got underway, providing a reminder to helmsmen, tacticians and crew on all 11 yachts that this Andalusian venue lies just 25km from Gibraltar and the open Atlantic beyond.

Racing today was held in stiff 20+ knot winds that topped out at 27 knots, creating boat speeds of 20+ knots, plus a worthy test for crews. After race one, the fleet was ordered back to Sotogrande Marina when a giant grey cloud crossed the course, obscured the rock of Gibraltar, while emptying its contents upon the crews.

The 2016 RC44 World Championship Marina de Sotogrande is the second event of the 2016 Championship Tour, which pitts the world's top businessmen and the best sailors in the industry compete in high performance one-design 44-foot carbon racing yachts. Published on May 12, 2016

RC44 Championship Tour Promo:
Since its launch in 2007, the RC44 Championship Tour has established itself as a key series to compete on in the international yacht racing circuit.

Match Racing - Squally Sotogrande stunts match racing day:

'The rain in Spain stays mainly on the plain', but for the opening day of match racing, prior to the start of the RC44 World Championship Marina de Sotogrande fleet racing, the Andalusian port received an unseasonal, but thorough soaking. 25km away, Gibraltar was obscured by cloud, as the match racing, which rolls from regatta to regatta over the RC44's annual championship, only reached its second flight before there was a giant shift, the wind shut down completely and the boats were sent in. Published on May 11, 2016 - Fleet racing, counting towards the RC44 World Championship Marina de Sotogrande, begins tomorrow at 1130 CET and will run for four days.

Below--Highlights from the previous RC44 event--RC44 Bermuda Cup:

Francois Gabart MACIF Takes Line Honors in The Transat bakerly 2016

MACIF crossed The Transat bakerly finish line at 18:24 EDT (22:24 GMT) Tuesday off New York:

NEWSFLASH: Gabart takes line honours in The Transat bakerly 2016 | News | The Transat bakerly"Frenchman François Gabart on board his new 100ft trimaran Macif, crossed The Transat bakerly finish line at 18:24 EDT (22:24 GMT) this evening off New York, taking line honours in the Ultime class. The finish time, recorded by the Sandy Hook Pilot Association boat, marks the first solo race win on Macif for the 33-year-old, who in 2013 became the youngest ever winner of the Vendée Globe solo round-the-world race. Gabart covered the official course distance of 3,050 nautical miles in 8 days, 8 hours, 54 minutes and 39 seconds. Gabart actually sailed a total distance of 4,634 miles at an average speed of 23.11 knots in a remarkable voyage. Unusually for The Transat bakerly, it took him, and his close rival Thomas Coville on Sodebo, hundreds of miles south of the Azores into the tradewinds before sling-shouting northwest up to New York. As Gabart crossed the line Coville was still some 118nm from the finish while the third-placed trimaran in the Ultime class – Actual skippered by Yves Le Blevec – was still 509.6nm away ..."

For many, this was their first — and probably, last — America’s Cup race, a once-in-lifetime event that was worth waiting for, even when nature wouldn’t initially cooperate early Saturday..."

Team ETNZ: No Wind in New York on Day 1, Saturday, May 7, 2016: There were barely fits and starts in New York on Race Day one. Not enough wind to counter the strong Hudson current made for an entertaining race day.

Where to Watch the America’s Cup in New York - The New York Times"The America’s Cup sailing races will be held in New York City, for the first time since 1920, on Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8. Officially called the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series, the event is a preliminary competition among the six countries — the United States, Britain, France, Japan, New Zealand and Sweden — competing in the 35th America’s Cup, held every four years, in Bermuda next June (2017); the teams race on boats that are about 45 feet long and have a 70-foot-high mast, according to the America’s Cup commercial commissioner, Harvey Schiller. “Watching these vessels speed through the water is quite a spectacle,” he said. No tickets are necessary to view the races. They take place rain or shine and will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday on the Hudson River. Spectators can take in most of the action in areas in and around Battery Park City..."

Tuesday 3rd May | News | The Transat bakerly"A French yachtsman competing in The Transat bakerly solo transatlantic race from Plymouth to New York, was forced to abandon the race today after his boat crashed into a container ship. Maxime Sorel on board the yacht VandB was among the leaders in the 10-strong Class40 fleet, as the boats raced downwind in the northern Bay of Biscay about 90 nautical miles west of Lorient, when he reported a collision. The boat suffered damage to its bowsprit, forcing Sorel to head to the French port La Trinite sur Mer in Brittany. Sorel is safe and uninjured and the boat’s mast is stable but he is very disappointed to have to retire ... The collision happened in broad daylight and good visibility this morning, in an area of busy commercial shipping off the Brittany coast. Sorel said he was keeping watch as VandB sailed under spinnaker but he did not see the cargo ship..."

Transat bakerly 2016 Leaves Plymouth, England, for New York (videos)

The Transat bakerly start:
A view from the sky - fantastic heli images of The Transat bakerly start: At 14.30 hours, the 25 skippers competing in The Transat bakerly answered the starter’s gun fired from the decks of the Royal Navy frigate HMS Kent, marking the start of their 3,050 nm journey across the Atlantic. Phil Sharp: It's very hard, from the beginning to end - Published May 2, 2016

The Transat bakerly 2016 sets sail on one of the greatest race courses of them all"The 25 boats in The Transat bakerly 2016 fleet set sail today on one of the great races in solo sailing, the 3,050-nautical mile passage across the north Atlantic from Plymouth to New York. Spectators both on shore and on the water turned out to watch as the mostly French fleet gathered under grey skies on Plymouth Sound, England, to answer the starter’s gun fired from the decks of the Royal Navy frigate HMS Kent at 14.30hrs.

"Ahead of the solo skippers and their boats lies one of the most daunting challenges in professional sport – the north Atlantic, complete with bitterly cold storm force headwinds, an ever-present adverse swell, freezing fog and even the danger of ice. The forecast for this year’s race – the first time this classic has been staged since 2008 – is for a reasonably quiet start but for 45-knot headwinds and big seas for the leading yachts by Wednesday, as they head into the Western Approaches.

"The fleet is divided into four classes, each of which will produce an official winner of The Transat bakerly:

  1. Fastest boats are the giant trimarans of the Ultime class, three of which are battling it out for line honours, with the first expected to reach the finish at New York in around eight days.
  2. Next the five-strong fleet of smaller Multi50 trimarans which could fly across the “pond” in 12 days;
  3. Six IMOCA 60s - the state-of-the-art monohulls used in the Vendee Globe solo round-the-world race that starts later this year;
  4. Slowest boats will be the smaller monohulls of the 10-strong Class40 fleet which should take around 15 days to complete the course but in which we should see some of the tightest racing.
"Alongside the fleet is a one-off entry by the French racing legend Loick Peyron who is sailing Eric Tabarly’s 44ft wooden ketch Pen Duick II in the same trim as she was when Tabarly raced her to victory in The Transat (then called the OSTAR) in 1964. Peyron is expecting to take around 27 days to reach the finish at New York." Read more: The Transat bakerly 2016

Transat, Solo Transatlantic, Plymouth to New York City, May 2 Start

The Transat bakerly - One man, one boat, the Ocean - The Transat is the Mother of all single-handed ocean races; the original contest that pitted one sailor and one boat against the sea. This race launched professional offshore sailing as we now know it. Upwind, into the ice & fog - The Transat is still considered as one of the hardest of all ocean races.

The Transat is back! For the first time in eight years this iconic race is back and in a big way with some of the biggest names in sailing taking part, including French legend Loïck Peyron onboard Eric Tabarly's Pen Duick II

The Race | The Transat bakerly: "The Transat – single-handed ocean racing at its best. Up to 3,500 miles of open water from southwest England to New York City. A challenge dominated by the progression of low pressure systems sweeping across the north Atlantic that produce the headwinds that define this classic race. To start with the fastest time was in the order of 40 days. Now the world’s top solo sailors in the world’s fastest boats can make the same passage in as little as 8 days. After skipping an edition four years ago, The Transat is back with up to 40 boats in four classes, starting from Plymouth, England, on May 2nd 2016."

Presentation of the skippers in Saint-Malo:

The Transat bakerly fleet gathered in Saint-Malo for the first ever pre-race Warm-Up to Plymouth | The Transat bakerlyFor the first time in the history of the solo classic the race was preceded by a non-timed, pre-start warm-up from Saint-Malo to Plymouth. The crowds gathered in the French Brittany port of Saint-Malo to welcome the skippers and boats who will contest this year’s Transat bakerly solo transatlantic race from Plymouth to New York. For the first time in the history of the solo classic, first staged in 1960 when it was won by Sir Francis Chichester, the race is preceded by a non-timed, pre-start warm-up from Saint-Malo to Plymouth. Almost all of the yachts taking part in the gruelling 3,000-mile classic set sail from Saint-Malo at 20:00 local time on Saturday 23rd April for the 130-nautical mile passage to Plymouth. On board were the skippers plus members of the media or other corporate guests who enjoyed an authentic taste of what The Transat bakerly is all about – sailing to windward. Most of the boats docked in Plymouth on Sunday morning.
