The Battle Continues On - Vendée Globe 2012-2013: "Three down with nine to go. So François Gabart (MACIF), Armel Le Cléac’h (Banque Populaire), François Gabart (MACIF) and Alex Thomson (Hugo Boss) may have written the opening lines of the epilogue of the seventh Vendée Globe, but there remains nine pretenders to yet end the tale. Today, the plotline revolves around a tired, lonely, Jean-Pierre Dick (Virbac Paprec 3) moored keel-less to a buoy for three days with too much time to think and not enough food or fuel. He is waiting for a weather window so that he can begin his 291 miles journey back to Les Sables d’Olonne. So near yet so far."

Vendee Globe - Thomson sailing in tough conditions for 3rd place (video)

Day 81 Highlights by VendeeGlobeTV

Vendee Globe live tracking (Thomson in 3rd place)

Toughest 24 Hours For Thomson - Vendée Globe 2012-2013: "Alex Thomson onboard Hugo Boss is experiencing horrendous, calamitous conditions in the home strait of the race. Having never completed the race before Thomson will be tense. He told the English Vendée Globe Live that he was in horrible conditions of 35 knots of winds and a very confused unpleasant sea. He anticipated that the wind would build later to 35 to 45 knots and then drop off to 25 to 30 knots. It is the cruel nature of this race that in order to ensure the milder conditions in the Southern Ocean the fleet must depart and return to Les Sables d'Olonne at a time when the tempestuous Bay of Biscay is at it's worst. Parts of the continental shelf reach into the bay, creating fairly shallow waters in many parts and also the rough seas for which the region is reknowned. The Bay of Biscay is resident to some of the Atlantic Ocean's nastiest weather. Big storms hit the bay, especially during the winter months. Up until recently, it was not uncommon for merchant vessels to founder in Biscay storms. . . . "

Thomson holding back (in 4th place) waiting for Dick's (sailing without a keel in 3rd place) decision--
A Noble Gesture - Vendée Globe 2012-2013: " . .  . Tonight and tomorrow morning a front will pass over myself and JP with some strong breeze and I will stick around him to make sure there is someone close by if something was to happen to him. JP is a great sailor and I am confident in his ability to sail safely to wherever he chooses but I know that if I was in his position I would like to have someone watching my back through the strong winds that are coming. He has not asked me to assist in any way, but I really feel that I cannot sail off and leave him until I know that he is confident and has confirmed what his intentions are. It is simple for me really, if he has a problem I will try and help him and once he has got through the worst of the weather safely and happy with the boat tonight, and if he then decides to continue with the race safely, then I will adjust my course and continue with mine. What I don’t want is to be too far away from him if he has an issue with the coming strong winds and before he knows if he is fully capable of continuing.”. . . "

Carry On Keel-less - Vendée Globe 2012-2013: " . . . It all depends on the sea state, of course. 5-metre waves would be very tricky to deal with in his situation but full ballasts are very heavy, almost as heavy as the yacht herself, and that can really help. What he just can’t effort is to have an increased heel, that would make his boat capsize. The safest way to sail would be to go really slow, but of course it means the skippers behind him would catch up with him and pass him. Needless to say, Jean-Pierre he doesn’t want that to happen, it’s a competition.” It is expected that Jean-Pierre Dick (Virbac Paprec 3) will make his decision on Sunday. The decision lies solely with Jean Pierre Dick as stated in the notice of race and under the ISAF The Racing Rules Of Sailing 2013, 4 Decision to Race. ‘The responsibility for a boat’s decision to participate in a race, or to continue is hers alone.’ It is also permitted within the rules to seek technical guidance for onboard technical issues. . . ."

Previous, Vendée Globe winner, Alain Gaultier, said today web tv show Vendée Globe LIVE, “Jean-Pierre Dick is probably sailing with 6 or 7 tons of water in the ballast, which is fine and safe when sailing upwind. Captain's Log - Alex Thomson: "I never thought we would see a keel failure on this race" - Vendée Globe 2012-2013 - “I am shocked and gutted at the news that JP Dick has lost his keel.  JP has sailed an awesome race and does not deserve this to happen to him. He has worked so hard and maintained his 3rd position despite having to climb the mast countless times. I am thankful that it has happened here and not in the south although JP will have to go through some significant weather to get to the Azores, potentially up to 40 knots on the 26th.  I never thought we would see a keel failure on this race.  IMOCA has of course a history with keel failures but I really thought all those problems were behind us.  It will be interesting to review the failures of Virbac and Safran, both penned from the same designer to see exactly why these failures have happened. . . .”
