RC44 Marstrand Cup, Sweden, Match Racing, Fleet Racing Videos

Match Racing Highlights - RC44 Marstrand Cup - published on Jul 29, 2015: The opening day of the RC44 Marstrand Cup saw Bronenosec Sailing Team consolidate its lead at the top of the 2015 RC44 Match Racing championship.

Russian consistency pays off in Marstrand - RC Forty Four: "... After winning Tuesday's match racing, Bronenosec has only finished off the podium in one fleet race, which Italian tactician Michele Ivaldi puts down to a combination of going the right way, his skipper steering well and good boat speed, thanks to trimmers Paul Westlake and Maciel Cicchetti. "They did a fantastic job - we had clean starts, clean lanes upwind and the speed did most of it. We got a few good shifts and all the manoeuvres were done flawlessly from the crew."..."

Day 1 Fleet Racing Highlights - RC44 Marstrand Cup - published on Jul 29, 2015: Just one point separates the top three teams after the opening day of fleet racing at the RC44 Marstrand Cup. Three races were held today in 10 -15 knots winds with grey overcast conditions in the morning giving way to a summery afternoon, similar to yesterday, only with an uncomfortable lumpy sea state. At the close of play Team Nika leads on seven points, ahead of Artemis Racing and Charisma on eight.

GC32 Racing Tour 2015, 30 July-2 Aug 2015, Kiel, Germany (videos)

GC32 Racing Tour 2015, 30 July–2 Aug 2015: Kiel, GermanyFrom an ‘offshore’ race in England, the GC32s move on to 2015’s most compact race course on the inner Fjord of Kiel, right in the heart of Germany’s sailing capital. Situated on the Baltic, Kiel is well known in sailing circles for annually hosting Kieler Woche – one the world’s largest sailing festivals. Kiel-Marketing GmbH, which is running the logistics of the event, expects the Kiel Cup to be a huge attraction to the city’s sailing-mad population. If the weather behaves, crowds of 100,000 are anticipated, with spectators able to see the ‘whites of competitors’ eyes’ from vantage points, including tiered seating, around the Inner Fjord. Aside from Kieler Woche, Kiel has hosted numerous major international events over the years from the sailing at the 1972 Olympic Games and the end of the 2001-2 Volvo Ocean Race to, more recently, the Extreme Sailing Series over 2008-2010 and the start of the MOD70 European Tour in 2012. The majority of racing will be held on the tight 700m across by 1.5km long course on the Inner Fjord. This will provide crews with a robust work-out given that their boats are capable of 30+ knots and closing speeds of 60… Boat handling at this event will be at a premium like no other. A longer race out to a lighthouse at the mouth of Kiel Fjord may also be built into the schedule.

GC32 Racing Tour 2015:
27-31 May 2015: Austria Cup – Lake Traunsee, Austria
24–27 June 2015: Cowes Cup – Cowes, UK
30 July–2 Aug 2015: Kiel, Germany
27-30 August 2015: Trofeo di Roma – Rome Fiumicino, Italy
10–13 September 2015: Marseille One Design – Marseille, France

Transpac 2015 Fleet Endures Diverse Conditions in 48th Transpac California to Hawaii Yacht Race: "... Wild Oats navigator Nick White reporting “Right now we’re averaging around 19 knots and aiming straight at the Barn Door – Hawaii. It’s fantastic downwind sailing. You couldn’t ask for much better…except we’d like some sunshine instead of heavy cloud. “As it turned out, the forecasts proved to be completely unreliable,” White said. “We had to ignore them and do our own thing in the conditions we were experiencing at the time. It was really tough tactically, especially when we were trying to get around Santa Catalina Island and out to sea.”..."

Transpac 2015 Start 3 Highlights (published on Jul 18, 2015)
Transpac 2015 updates:
Transpac 2015 Race News: Strange rainy weather and light southerly breezes greeted the fastest boats in the fleet for the third and final starting day of the 48th biennial LA-Honolulu Transpac on Saturday, as the first wave leaders passed the halfway point to Hawaii, and the second wave started to slide out of the light air slump on their second day of racing. While this was bizarre weather for July, it did not discourage dozens of spectator boats assembled in everything from kayaks to cruise boats to watch the two starts held off Point Fermin in Los Angeles. First off the start line at 12:30 local time were the three Gunboats in the multihull class, just able to get moving in the light air off the start line, but as a puff from the south rolled in they were quickly off. Pat Benz’s bright green GB 66 Extreme H2O took an early jump off the start for being the only boat with a masthead genoa, but Lloyd Thornburg’s bright orange Phaedo, another GB 66, was holding close once the breeze filled in a few knots. source: Race News

Race News"The fleet starting today (July 13) was a broad mix of designs, from the 1907 sail training schooner Martha sailed by a crew of 11 to the relatively new 30-foot Italian sportboat Fortissimo II sailed by a team of four from Japan. All must clear the West End of Catalina Island before heading over the horizon en route to a finish line at Diamond Head on the island of Oahu."

"The Transpacific Yacht Race (Transpac) is an offshore yacht race starting off San Pedro, Los Angeles at the Pt. Fermin buoy, and ending off Diamond Head Lighthouse[2] in Honolulu, a distance of around 2,225 nautical miles (2,560 mi; 4,121 km). Started in 1906, it is one of yachting's premier offshore races and attracts entrants from all over the world. The race is organized by the Transpacific Yacht Club." (Wikipedia)

Race History: "Transpac stands apart from other major ocean races as essentially a "downwind race," as determined by normal weather patterns in the eastern Pacific north of the equator. After two or three days of slogging on the wind, the fleet encounters the "Pacific High," a mammoth, wallowing blob of high pressure rotating clockwise between Hawaii and the West Coast of North America. As boats reach the lower edge of the high the wind bends aft and turns warm spinnakers go up, shirts come off, and sailors usually enjoy a pleasant ride the rest of the way."

First Finishers of the 2015 Transatlantic Race

Bryan Ehrhart’s Lucky secured line honors in the Transatlantic Race, second across the famous Castle line was Nomad IV, Clarke Murphy’s 100ft Maltese flagged yacht that suffered hydraulic failure during the race, meaning water ballast, sail hoist and controls all had to be manned by the crew’s own strength only. At present Lucky holds the lead in the Transatlantic Race 2015 under IRC handicap, but the title remains under threat from boats yet to finish. Similarly, her impressive course time is likely to be bettered by the maxis which started four days after her. (published on Jul 12, 2015)

A look back at the 2014 Race to Mackinac from Froeter Design Company on Vimeo.
The 2014 Chicago to Mackinac Yacht Race aboard Chief was 289 non-stop nautical miles. For 106 years the race has been many things. It's an annual ritual, a reunion, a test of skill, of boat handling and navigational judgement and once in a while, sanity. When it's all said and done it's about relationships, stories and the greatest of memories. This film short was captured on GoPro 3 and 3+ black edition cameras. The aerial footage was shot with a Phantom 2 quadcopter. Mike Noble wrote the narration. The video editing was done with Adobe After Effects at Froeter Design. Morgan Fingleton of Shaggy Dog Productions did the sound design.

Chicago to Mackinac race: See who's giving Amway heirs' yacht some competition | MLive.com: "Cory Dangler sells cars during the week. But this weekend, he and his crew of three buddies will sail his tri-hulled boat, Solstice, in the prestigious 107th Chicago Yacht Club to Mackinac race. "It's something that was on my bucket list my entire life," said Dangler, the owner of Auto Exchange of Holland and a sailor since he was 10. Solstice is one of 82 Michigan-based vessels to enter the classic race, which begins at the Chicago Lighthouse just off Navy Pier on Friday and ends at Mackinac Island sometime over the weekend, depending on the weather conditions. More than 330 yachts are entered, according to race officials. Dangler, whose 28-foot vessel is one of the smaller boats entered in the race, will be up against some of the fastest sailing vessels in the world, including Windquest, the 86-foot yacht owned by Amway Corp. scions Dick and Doug DeVos..."
