Volvo Ocean Race Newport RI 2018 with Brad Read of Sail Newport (domain: sailnewport.org).

Newport Living & Lifestyles video above published May 8, 2018: Champion Sailor and executive director Brad Read of Sail Newport speaks on the impact of the Volvo Ocean Race and VOR Village at Fort Adams State Park in Newport Rhode Island. Through VOR’s nine month journey with the world’s toughest sailors from around the world, Newport Rhode Island is directly impacting children’s interest in sailing, the RI economy, Earth conservationists and the sailing community as a whole.

Newport, Rhode Island, for many years, was home to the series of yacht races for the America's Cup. The waters off Newport have been a key sailing venue for the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) since the beginning of its history. In addition to its Manhattan headquarters, located inland, the NYYC maintains "Harbour Court", a clubhouse opened in 1988 on the water in Newport.

Don't Miss Out on the New York Yacht Club's 2018 Regatta Season:

New York Yacht Club video above published on May 15, 2018: "Whether it's the tradition and history of the 164th Annual Regatta, the pure competition of the One-Design Regatta or the pageantry of Race Week at Newport (Rhode Island) presented by Rolex, the New York Yacht Club is hosting an event for you this summer. Sign-up now and set your sights on Newport, and the podium."

Rolex Fastnet Race 2015, Approaching Fastnet Rock, Sailing Videos

Rolex Fastnet Race 2015, Approaching Fastnet Rock – 17 August - published on Aug 17, 2015: Day 2 of the 2015 Rolex Fastnet Race. The leading yachts have passed the halfway point of the 603-nm offshore race with the front-running multihulls rounding the race’s emblematic turning point – the Fastnet rock. The fastest monohulls are in close pursuit, while the majority of the fleet is engaged in a real tactical contest as it grinds its way slowly past the headlands of southern England. The 46th edition of the Rolex Fastnet Race is well underway and living up to its reputation as a true test of sailing prowess.

Rolex Fastnet Race 2015 start video above - The Start - The 2015 Rolex Fastnet Race is underway. After negotiating seven separate start sequences called from the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, the largest fleet in the race’s proud 90-year history have commenced the famous 603-nautical mile offshore race to Plymouth via Ireland’s Fastnet rock. Progress at the start was slow, the 356 race starters forced to find the merest zephyr of breeze during one of the lightest starts in the race’s history. Fortunately a building breeze has seen the fleet make good progress on exiting the Solent. Published on Aug 17, 2015

Tracking Rolex Fastnet Race 2015 - rolexfastnetrace.com
Mastering the Light: "...“Everybody can sail in a good wind but you have to strive very hard to make sure you perform well in the light. If the boat is going just a fraction of a knot more than a competitor you get ahead and when the breeze does kick in, that lead multiplies. In the light we can sail 5 or 10% better than the opposition and that is difficult to achieve in a true wind..."

Languishing off the Lizard: "Progress overnight in the Rolex Fastnet Race has been better than expected with the majority of the fleet having been lured out into the middle of the Channel following the temptation of stronger winds. At 0800 this morning the leading multihulls had passed Land’s End and were tackling the south side of the Traffic Separation Scheme east of the Scillies. Inevitably the larger 40m Spindrift 2 had edged into the lead overnight, but was only seven miles ahead of American Lloyd Thornburg’s MOD70 Phaedo³, tightly bunched in with Musandam-Oman Sail and the Multi 80, Prince de Bretagne. At the time Spindrift 2 was sailing into pressure, making 14 knots while the boats behind were managing only 8-10. At the time Seven Stones light vessel off Land’s End was recording 8-9 knots of wind from the ESE..."

It's back to you, Iker | Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015"MAPFRE’s stand-in skipper Xabi Fernández (ESP), was savouring a memorable Leg 4 triumph in the Volvo Ocean Race on Sunday, but his stint in charge will come to a halt for the next stage through the Southern Ocean. The 38-year-old Basque took over from his long-term sailing partner and best friend, Iker Martínez, for the last two legs while the latter concentrated on his 2016 Rio Olympics preparations. Xabi, for so long the right-hand man of his illustrious partner, has clearly not been daunted by the challenge, guiding the Spanish crew to fourth in Leg 3 and then following up with a paper-thin victory on Saturday night on the 5,264-nautical mile (nm) stage from Sanya to Auckland. He told a press conference on Sunday morning that, despite his success, normal service on board MAPFRE would be resumed when the fleet sets sail for Itajaí on March 15 for the toughest of all nine stages, Leg 5 through the Southern Ocean. “Iker is coming back,” Xabi told reporters. “He’s flying out on the 6th (March). He’s going to be with us on the next leg, which was always the plan...." (read more at the link above)
