Drowned sailor's desperate final moments during Dauphin Island regatta described by boat captain | AL.com: "The boat, he said, was "knocked horizontal." Creekmore said he dropped himself into the water, on the side of the boat opposite the wind, to let down the sails. The boat righted itself, he said, and he climbed back in. That's when he saw Beall hanging on behind the boat as the wind thrust it forward. Creekmore said he grabbed the line, trying to draw Beall toward him, but instead almost got pulled in himself. Within seconds, he said, Beall was no longer there. "There was no way we could sail the boat back against 70-mile-per-hour winds," Creekmore said..."

Quantum Key West Race Week 2015 highlights - published on Feb 3, 2015 - Video edited by www.zerogradinord.net - Calvi Netwrok, Carlo Alberini J/70 winner of Boat of the Week Trophy.

Storm Trysail Club Takes Over Ownership of Key West Race Week - Quantum Sail Design Group remains onboard as title sponsor of popular regatta: (Press Release) – "Quantum Key West Race Week will continue thanks to the organizational expertise of a new ownership group and the ongoing support of its title sponsor – Quantum Sail Design Group. The Storm Trysail Club is pleased to announce that it has come to an agreement with Premiere Racing to take over ownership and management of the prestigious regatta. The Storm Trysail Club, established in 1938, is well known for running Block Island Race Week, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary this summer. Storm Trysail Club also organizes the Lauderdale‐to-Key West Race that has long served as feeder for Key West Race Week. “Key West Race Week is a terrific bookend to the club’s long - standing Block Island Race Week,” Storm Trysail Club commodore Lee Reichart said. “We believe we will be able to utilize our experience at Block Island to ensure that Key West remains the most prominent winter big-‐ boat event in North America.”

"Quantum Key West Race Week 2016 will be held Jan. 18 - 22, 2016 with many of the same elements that made the regatta so popular remaining in place. Foremost is the sponsorship of Quantum, the second-largest sail-making company in the world... Reynolds thanked Peter Craig and his team at Premiere Racing for 21 years of dedication to ensuring Key West Race Week remained a highlight of the racing calendar, both within the United States and abroad. Reynolds also acknowledged an appreciation for Premiere Racing’s commitment to ensuring a smooth transition.
“Through Peter’s leadership, Key West Race Week has become an internationally-‐renowned regatta. It would be a huge loss to the competitors and the industry if the regatta were to go away,” Reynolds said ... Storm Trysail Club members are in the process of contacting all past sponsors and will be working to bring new partners into the mix. Jeff Johnstone has pledged the support of J/Boats, a worldwide leader in high-performance sailboats. All sorts of J/Boats designs have competed at Key West Race Week over the years, either in one-design, PHRF or IRC classes. Johnstone challenged other industry leaders to do their part in making Key West Race Week a success.... Storm Trysail Club announced that longtime member John Fisher will serve as event chairman for Key West Race Week. Fisher has been involved with Block Island Race Week since 1999, serving as chairman for three editions of the biennial regatta. Reichart said Fisher, a past commodore of Storm Trysail Club, was selected for the role because of his proven strength with logistics... Dick Neville, another Storm Trysail Club veteran, has been appointed race committee chairman. Neville has been working Key West Race Week for nearly two decades as right-hand man to Division 2 principal race officer Dave Brennan. Neville is expecting to conduct starts in most of the classes that have traditionally competed at Key West... Fisher said Nick Langone will serve as shore-side committee chairman while John Storck Jr. will oversee mobile marina logistics. The Storm Trysail Club hopes to retain the services of numerous dedicated volunteers that worked for Premiere Racing for many years..."

more info: volvooceanrace.com - As per Jean Luc’s forecast, the wind is slowly dropping, same thing as the routing forecast showed. We’ve been mostly sailing with our J1 until the breeze dropped under 14 knots, and then we changed to the FRO. The girls must be struggling with this wind shift, cause their FRO is destroyed”, says Rob G. Having such a damaged sail can really harm you at this stage of the race. From the beginning Iker said, “the sails must be looked after as if they were our girlfriends, they are the boat’s engine”. We keep sailing up, heading to the Northeast, and we are bound to tack tonight with the trade winds shift. We’ll sail close to Fernando de Noronha again, the island we went by at the beginning of the race. This is becoming more interesting all the time. The next few days will be full of action and Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing looks well positioned right now.... read more here

ISAF Review Complaints About 34th America's Cup Jury"ISAF has received complaints about the 34th America's Cup Jury from Paul Henderson. The complaints concern alleged gross misconduct of the judges in how they conducted themselves. ISAF procedures require complaints to be reviewed to establish if there is a case to answer. ISAF has reviewed these together with external legal counsel and has considered representations from the judges in question. In conclusion, ISAF considers there is no case to answer having reviewed all the complaints. There is a right of appeal against this decision and ISAF will not comment further."

Volvo Ocean Race 2015 -- a look back at Leg 5 -- sailors endure the cold and humidity of the tough Southern Ocean. The fleet conveys together again as the boats meet to race alongside the compulsory ice gate. And pushing the boat too hard finally comes at a high price for one of the teams… with the legendary Cape Horn looming around the corner all hands are on deck to push even quicker towards the finish line. Life at the Extreme - Ep. 27 - 'Cold sweat' | Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15

Rio 2016 chief organiser defends sailing venue: "... Organising Committee president Carlos Nuzman claimed the voices slamming the state of the sailing venue - which include biologist Mario Moscatelli - were selective in dissecting the areas of the waterfront. "The sailors compete all over the world, in various different locations, even if there are water problems or not," Nuzman said. "Whoever was in Beijing knows very well how the sailing venue had problems, and still has them today. Sydney as well. So I'm not wanting to point this out, but I'm wanting to say that here will be different. It's going to be. We are working on it... "

Man lost at sea for 66 days a 'pretty remarkable' textbook case for survival | US news | The Guardian: "... Jon Ehm, business development manager at survival education company Survival Systems USA, said that Jordan’s claims are realistic. “It proves that given a strong will to live and a little bit of ingenuity, a person can do quite well, with very little in the way of resource,” Ehm said. “Well – surviving 66 days with no food or water and making do – he wasn’t thriving, but definitely surviving.” Ehm said that several factors worked in Jordan’s favor, for instance having remained on a boat instead of a life raft and his experience as a professional fisherman, which meant he had the skills to acquire food. Most important, Ehm said, is that Jordan had access to water, because hydration is the priority in a survival situation..."

Volvo Ocean Race: A short lull in the breeze means repairs to boats and bodies and a bit of drying out before the wind builds again on the home stretch to Itajaí!

Meanwhile, the America's Cup "War of Words" continues--

(Video above published March 26) Emirates Team New ZealandEmirates Team New Zealand saddened by Luna Rossa's withdrawal April 3, 2015- "Emirates Team New Zealand are deeply saddened by the news of the withdrawal from the America’s Cup of Luna Rossa, one of the most established, respected and admired brands in the history of the event. Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa are close allies and share common values of fair play and integrity. Team CEO Grant Dalton today said, “We are quite frankly in disbelief that the continued actions of the America’s Cup Event Authority have lead to the withdrawal of our great friends Luna Rossa. It sends a clear and unmistakable message that the self-serving manoeuvring of rules within sports oldest trophy has consequences for not only the America’s Cup but also all of sailing. “ Emirates Team New Zealand have filed its case on the illegal withdrawal of Auckland as the qualifier regatta venue with the America’s Cup Arbitration Panel and will be making no further comment at this time."

Statement from Artemis Racing, BAR, ORACLE TEAM USA, Team France - 35th America's Cup: April 3, 2015: "We are disappointed to see how Team New Zealand are characterizing the rule changes that reflect the collective will of the America’s Cup teams. During discussions last month, ALL six teams, including Team new Zealand, agreed on the need to change to a smaller boat to reduce costs. While Luna Rossa supported a less dramatic change, a majority of teams agreed on what has become the America’s Cup Class, a new rule written in consultation with ALL teams, with drafts of the rule sent to ALL teams for comment and feedback. Each team that voted for this new America's Cup Class made compromises and sacrifices to get this done for the betterment of the America’s Cup. Taking these important decisions by a majority vote is something that was insisted upon by Luna Rossa and written into the rules of the event. Regrettably, abiding by the results of the majority vote appears to be something neither they, nor Team New Zealand, are willing to do... unless they are part of the majority. We hope that Team New Zealand can see a way forward, as we all have, and look forward to racing them in the Americas Cup World Series later this year. - On behalf of Ben Ainslie (BAR), Franck Cammas (Team France), Iain Percy (Artemis Racing), Jimmy Spithill (ORACLE TEAM USA)"

Man rescued from capsized sailboat two months after going missing at sea | US news | The Guardian"An American missing at sea for 66 days was rescued from his capsized boat 200 miles off the North Carolina coast, telling coastguards he survived on drinking rainwater and catching fish. Louis Jordan, 37, who was reported missing by his family in January, was spotted sitting on the overturned hull of his 35ft boat by the crew of a German tanker.... “He might sail up and down the Intercoastal Waterway, but he didn’t have the experience he needed to go out into the ocean,”... Records show Jordan sailed out of the marina in Conway on 23 January on board the sailboat Angel. Coastguard spokeswoman Marilyn Fajardo said officials in Miami were notified by Jordan’s father, Frank, on 29 January that he had not been seen or heard from in a week. Alerts were issued from New Jersey to Miami to be on the lookout...As he had not filed a “float plan” - the nautical equivalent of a flight plan – giving details of his route and destination, there was not enough information to narrow down the search...
