The World Sailing Show gets aboard Phil Sharp and Pablo Santurde’ s Class 40 Imerys for a full-on, double handed 4,000 mile sleigh ride south to see how the pair took the coveted overall season title.

Also heading south, the Volvo Ocean Race fleet descended on Cape Town. With 7,000 miles under their belts, stomachs were starting to churn among the crew at the thought of the next 6,500 across the notorious Southern Ocean – they tell the World Sailing Show why.

What will make the new America’s Cup boat be so quick? Cup guru Grant Simmer explains in an exclusive interview.

We take a look at two major new world records set at very different ends of the scale. We also find out how to compete in a world championships without getting your feet wet.

GlobalCoralBleaching.org: "In 1998, a huge underwater heatwave killed 16% of the corals on reefs around the world. Triggered by the El Niño of that year, it was declared the first major global coral bleaching event. The second global bleaching event that struck was triggered by the El Niño of 2010. The US National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced the third global bleaching event in October 2015 and it has already become the longest event recorded, impacting some reefs in consecutive years. The new phenomenon of global coral bleaching events is caused by ocean warming (93% of climate change heat is absorbed by the ocean). Corals are unable to cope with today’s prolonged peaks in temperatures – they simply haven’t been able to adapt to the higher base temperatures of the ocean. Although reefs represent less than 0.1 percent of the world’s ocean floor, they help support approximately 25 percent of all marine species. As a result, the livelihoods of 500 million people and income worth over $30 billion are at stake ..."

Global coral bleaching could land heavy blow on Florida's recovering reefs reports Miami Herald's Jenny Staletovich: "A global coral bleaching that now ranks as the largest and longest on record could count Florida reefs among its next victims, scientists warned this week. As a powerful El Niño in the Pacific fizzles, scientists say they are keeping a close on the 220-mile reef tract that stretches between the Dry Tortugas and Fort Pierce, where recent bleaching has claimed less than one percent of the reef. After the last major El Niño in 1998, the region lost about 30 percent of the reef, a mortality rate that could climb higher in the face of climate change and increasing ocean temperatures." With over 1,500 entries and 16,000 sailors the annual Round the Island Race is a spectacle.

But this year’s race was particularly special for one team that smashed race record – The World Sailing Show has the story and footage of the record breaking run. As the Games gets within striking distance, a new type of pressure is building for the competitors. We talk to the man they call the medal maker along with the British Olympic Sailing Team manager about the mental pressure of the Games.

Sailing with a sibling might not seem to be the perfect match, but two Chilean brother and sister pairings will be heading to the Games for a family affair in Rio. And Andy Rice explains why this Olympic class is so popular, yet so hard to sail well. Plus, news from around the world.

Sailing News: 
Winners of the 108th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac Island have crossed the finish line. The Flying Buffalo, sailed by Al and Bob Declercq, won the Mackinac Trophy Division, completing the 333 mile race in 46 hours and 52 minutes. The Flying Buffalo is now a four-time winner of the race. The Natalie J won the Mackinac Cup Division and Turbo Section, finishing in 26 hours and 15 minutes. Storms made for a tough race this year, with 22 boats dropping out and one even sinking. The 2016 Giraglia Cup race will be remembered as one of the most challenging in the regatta’s history. A record fleet of 268 entrants representing 18 nations battled against 30-plus knot winds over the final leg from Giraglia to Genoa. Gilles Pages and the crew of Tip emerged as the overall winners, earning a Rolex Submariner timepiece, while defending champion Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones, sailing his 100-foot Magic Carpet Cubed, took line honours and received a Rolex Yacht-Master. The 2016 Giraglia Rolex Cup was organized by the Yacht Club Italiano, the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, the Yacht Club Sanremo and the Cercle Nautique et Touristique du Lacydon. The Transat bakerly 2016 sets sail on one of the greatest race courses of them all: "The 25 boats in The Transat bakerly 2016 fleet set sail today on one of the great races in solo sailing, the 3,050-nautical mile passage across the north Atlantic from Plymouth to New York. Spectators both on shore and on the water turned out to watch as the mostly French fleet gathered under grey skies on Plymouth Sound, England, to answer the starter’s gun fired from the decks of the Royal Navy frigate HMS Kent at 14.30hrs.

"Ahead of the solo skippers and their boats lies one of the most daunting challenges in professional sport – the north Atlantic, complete with bitterly cold storm force headwinds, an ever-present adverse swell, freezing fog and even the danger of ice. The forecast for this year’s race – the first time this classic has been staged since 2008 – is for a reasonably quiet start but for 45-knot headwinds and big seas for the leading yachts by Wednesday, as they head into the Western Approaches.

"The fleet is divided into four classes, each of which will produce an official winner of The Transat bakerly:

1. Fastest boats are the giant trimarans of the Ultime class, three of which are battling it out for line honours, with the first expected to reach the finish at New York in around eight days.
2. Next the five-strong fleet of smaller Multi50 trimarans which could fly across the “pond” in 12 days;
3. Six IMOCA 60s - the state-of-the-art monohulls used in the Vendee Globe solo round-the-world race that starts later this year;
4. Slowest boats will be the smaller monohulls of the 10-strong Class40 fleet which should take around 15 days to complete the course but in which we should see some of the tightest racing.

"Alongside the fleet is a one-off entry by the French racing legend Loick Peyron who is sailing Eric Tabarly’s 44ft wooden ketch Pen Duick II in the same trim as she was when Tabarly raced her to victory in The Transat (then called the OSTAR) in 1964.
