America's Cup 2013 New Zealand AC72 launched

The first AC72 to touch water has been named 'New Zealand' during a rousing ceremony in Auckland on Saturday evening with Emirates Team New Zealand. The ceremonial champagne splash was unique, with the bottle set up in an inverted catapult mechanism designed and built for the occasion. With the crowd of supporters that numbered in the thousands pulling a line to 'load' the catapult, skipper Dean Barker's wife Mandy christened the boat 'New Zealand', as the bottle smashed over the bow. With Prime Minister John Key in attendance, Grant Dalton, the managing director of the team, paid tribute to the New Zealand marine industry which helped the team in designing and building the boat.

America's Cup 2013, good new and bad news in New Zealand - National America's Cup | Examiner.com: "The next AC72 expected to be launched will be the first of two planned Oracle team boats, which hits the water later this summer in San Francisco bay. According to information supplied by Amelise Javier of Hill+Knowlton Strategies, the America's Cup PR firm: "The AC72s are nearly twice as long as the AC45 catamarans (currently being raced in the America's Cup World Series) and will be more than twice as powerful. These elite catamarans are capable of top speeds 40 knots plus (about 45 mph) and are like no other America's Cup boat in history. Many of the sailors are calling these boats ‘monsters’ in terms of the demands they are expected to place on the crew of 11 sailors. Additional stats about the AC72s:
· Hull Length: 22.00 m (72 feet)
· Length overall: 26.20 m (85 feet)
· Beam: 14.00 m (46 feet)
· Displacement: 5900 kgs (13,000 pounds)
· Maximum Draft: 4.40m (14 feet)
· Wingsail Height: 40.00m (131 feet)
· Projected Top Speed: 40 knots plus (45 mpg)
· Crew: 11 people @ maximum of 92 kilograms (202 pounds)

All the teams who are competitors in the America’s Cup Finals or Louis Vuitton Cup must design and build their own AC72 catamaran for racing in 2013. Teams could begin launching their first AC72 on July 1, 2012, but are limited to 30 days of training and testing on the boat during the remaining calendar year."
