Vendée Globe video - smokin' fast in the Southern Ocean

Video highlights of the 31st day of the 2012-2013 Vendée Globe - Monday, December 19, 2012, with François Gabart's record.

Vendee Globe live tracking

Today's number: 545 - Vendée Globe 2012-2013: "545.3 nautical miles is the distance covered by Fraçois Gabart in 24 hours - between Sunday and Monday (4PM rankings) - at an average speed of 21.1 knots. The MACIF skipper has therefore beaten the record Jean-Pierre Dick had set * on December 1 (502.53 miles in 24 hours). Earlier this month, the Virbac Paprec 3 skipper had also beaten his own record (516.9 miles) and so had Bernad Stamm (506.9 miles). . . . * To become offical, records must be validated by the WSSRC (World Sailing Speed Record Council)."

My Sailing: Vendee Globe: Flying François Gabart (Macif) smashes 24hr solo sailing record at 545.3 miles: "Flying François Gabart stepped up his Vendée Globe challenge with an unprecedented display of lightning fast sailing in the middle of the Indian Ocean today. The youngest skipper in the race who, remarkably, is a rookie to solo sailing in the Southern Ocean, has set a set a truly electric pace – consistently at a level which none of his rivals have matched – to send the 24 hours solo monohull distance record soaring to a seemingly stratospheric 545.3 miles over the 24 hours to 1500hrs UTC this afternoon. . . ."

RSHYR Launch Story - Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2012: "At centre stage of the race, again run by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, is Sydney yachtsman Syd Fischer, a national living treasure who is still in the grip of finish line fever. At the age of 85, when most men of his age might be shuffling around a retirement village in their slippers with their trousers braced up around their chest, Fischer wants to win line honours in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht race - again. He's taken over the boat to do it, Investec Loyal, last year's first across the line. The 100-foot super maxi becomes the latest iteration of Fischer's Ragamuffin series, Ragamuffin Loyal. Syd - lean, leather-skinned, laconic, highly competitive and still the subject of discussion for his exploits on and off the water - personifies Sydney: he won't lie down. The challenge he mounts at the front of the 80-boat fleet caps off an indifferent year for Australian sport internationally, a disastrous year for world cycling, but a great year for Australian sailing. . . ."

Industry mourns Lightning class sailboat builder: "A passionate lover of the Buffalo Canoe Club and his summer home in Bay Beach, Ontario, Allen will be remembered for his ability to build and sail boats. In 1961 he founded the Allen Boat Co., in Buffalo, N.Y., where he built sailboats, but most notably, the Lightning class sailboat. His boats initially were built of wood, but over time their construction switched to fiberglass. He became the largest builder of the Lightning class boat in the world. At the time of his passing, Allen was still affiliated with the company, which is now run by his son, Thomas Allen. Allen’s sailing record is legendary. He won four Lightning world championships, eight North American Lightning championships, a Flying Dutchman North American championship, the Albacore Nationals and a gold and silver medal in the Pan American Games. . .
