Drama in Istanbul as Red Bull Sailing Team break their mast on Friday | News: "Red Bull Sailing Team made a dramatic and unexpected exit at the Extreme Sailing Series™ Act in Istanbul today after their mast broke in the second race. With the wind fluctuating from 12-20 knots, the mast snapped in spectacular style across the top third of the rig damaging the sails, and with no one onboard hurt, the Austrian team limped back to shore to begin overnight repairs..."

The open water race course close to the entrance to the Bosphorus and the steady winds give classic racing conditions. The race down the Bosphorus with the iconic mosques as a backdrop is rapidly becoming a classic feature of the circuit. The racing area will be on the Asian side of Istanbul overlooking the iconic mosques and the historic city making it a fantastic backdrop for our seventh Act of the Series. The Extreme Club and Race Village will be located in the lively district of Kadikoy.

Emirates Team New Zealand--ENTZ--won Act 6 of the Extreme Sailing Series in Istanbul. After a tight battle all week with The Wave Muscat for the top spot it came down to the final double points race. Dean Barker and his crew nailed the start and sailed away to win the regatta by 6 points.

Arctic sailing: Will ocean racers follow Franklin? - CNN.com: "Robert Molnar has a vision: an ocean race from New York to the Canadian Pacific city of Victoria, via the Arctic. "Because of climate change, we can do this race," Molnar told CNN. He pictures oceangoing sailboats hugging the Atlantic coast up through Halifax to western Greenland, then heading west through the Northwest Passage to Tuktoyaktuk on Canada's Arctic coastline, before rounding Alaska to Dutch Harbor and, at last, Victoria. In 2017, Molnar plans to make this a reality in the form of the Sailing the Arctic Race, or STAR. "The Arctic is the big attraction. There is a romanticism about it," says the 66-year-old, who spent decades working in advertising while nursing his passion for sailing..."

Unprecedented day with two dismastings as teams push to the limit & beyond, & Kiwis show return form » Extreme Sailing Series: "In an unprecedented opening day at the Extreme Sailing Series™ Act 6 in Istanbul, the public and national media witnessed some extraordinary adrenaline fueled racing, with every team pushing hard – and at times too hard, with two boats dismasting; first Groupama sailing team and then Alinghi. In near perfect sailing conditions that topped out at 20 knots, the French, with too much load on their rig at the windward mark, were the first to lose their new mast during race four, which disappointingly for the French came after their best start to an event this year. In a completely unrelated incident in the seventh and final race of the day, Alinghi suffered the same fate, with both boats now out of the water and with a long night in the pitlane to be back on the water [Friday]..."

The Turkish squad supported by ARKAS Sport Club of shipping company ARKAS Holding, is made up of Olympic level sailors including founder Edhem Dirvana, who have been busy training over the last few months with Extreme 40 veteran and class co-designer, Mitch Booth.
