RORC Caribbean 600 Race Report, Antigua:

MOD70 Nail-Biter--Multihull Line Honours for Phaedo3--While the multihull race record was not broken this year, Phaedo3 and Maserati had an incredible 600 mile high-speed duel. Lloyd Thornburg's MOD70, Phaedo3 finished the 2017 RORC Caribbean 600 on Tuesday 21 February 2017 at 21 hrs 20 mins 46 secs AST, taking Multihull Line Honours.

George David's American Maxi, Rambler 88 finished the 2017 RORC Caribbean 600 on Wednesday 22 February 2017 at 11 hrs 56 mins 17 secs AST taking Monohull Line Honours. This year was George David's third line honours win in the RORC Caribbean 600. However, the record set by his previous boat, Rambler 100 in 2011 remains intact for another year.

Bella Mente crossed the finish line just 14 minutes ahead of Proteus to set the bar for the RORC Caribbean 600 Trophy which will be awarded at the Prize Giving to the yacht scoring the best time under the IRC Rating Rule.

RORC Transatlantic Race Update 1 Dec 2016: Lloyd Thornburg's American MOD70 Phaedo3 has less than 1,000 miles to go to Camper & Nicholson's Port Louis Marina, Grenada. In the IRC fleet, Mike Slade's Maxi, Leopard 3 is ahead on the water and estimated to be leading the race after IRC time correction for the RORC Transatlantic Trophy. Behind the frontrunners, much of the fleet have encountered light winds and the future looks pretty grim with headwinds forecast. The team on the MOD70 Phaedo3 has hardly put a foot wrong since leaving Marina Lanzarote last Saturday (26 November). With perfect timing, Phaedo3 has blasted south connecting with another weather system to provide yet more high speed adrenalin downwind sailing. RORC Transatlantic Race 2016: Lanzarote to Grenada

The 3rd edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race started without a hitch in ideal conditions outside Marina Lanzarote on November 26, 2016. With a gentle breeze and slight sea state, it was a comfortable start to the 2,865 nautical mile ocean race to Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina in Grenada, West Indies. The three fastest yachts chose to head north of the rhumb line but once they have rounded Tenerife, the decision is whether to continue north or dive south. Day 2 UPDATE: (Nov 27): Lloyd Thornburg's American MOD70 Phaedo3, skippered by Brian Thompson has pulled out an astonishing lead of more than 100 miles on Giovanni Soldini's Italian MOD70, Maserati. However, this huge lead is due to a very different strategy developing, rather than a speed differential. Phaedo3 look to be committed to a southerly route, whilst Maserati appear to be going north. The Italian multihull may have delayed their move north to enjoy a calmer sea state after passing La Palma.

Phaedo3 to set the pace for Antigua Bermuda Race 2017 - Setting the pace for the 2017 Antigua Bermuda Race: Lloyd Thornburg's American MOD70 Phaedo3

Lloyd Thornburg's American MOD70 Phaedo3 will be attempting a record run from Antigua to Bermuda this April with a view to joining the Antigua Bermuda Race next year. Phaedo3 has set multiple world records over the past 12 months, including the Antigua to Newport passage, taking just 3 days, 5 hours, 55 minutes and 12 seconds to complete the 1,560 nautical mile course. The skipper for the record attempt will be Jules Verne record holder, Brian Thompson:

"I have probably sailed from Antigua to Bermuda 10 times; it is the classic delivery up from the Caribbean to the East Coast of the United States. In a normal boat it would be a five day trip, but Phaedo could possibly do it in two days. We literally passed Bermuda when we set the Antigua to Newport record last year and we did that in about 48 hours! Ideal conditions for us would be a well established high pressure system to the east of Bermuda, so we start with a 20 knot southeasterly, which becomes more southerly as we approach Bermuda - that would be perfect. Phaedo should be in Bermuda for a couple of days so if you want to come and see a real offshore, mile-eating machine, come along and have a look," says Phaedo3's British Co-Skipper, Brian Thompson.

Fifteen yachts ranging from 43 to 139ft (13-42m) have already registered their interest for the inaugural 2017 Antigua Bermuda Race. Yachts from all over the United States, Great Britain, Bermuda and Antigua are amongst the early entries, which include Supermaxis, Maxi Racing yachts, Classics, Performance blue water cruiser and high performance multihulls. Joining the schooner America and 112ft (34m) sloop, Spirit of Bermuda will be two British Maxi yachts; Peter Harrison's 115ft (35m) ketch, Sojana and Mike Slade's Maxi 100, Leopard 3. Lloyd Thornburg's MOD70, Phaedo3 cannot wait to get into action and will be attempting a record run this year prior to the 2017 Antigua Bermuda Race.

The 935 nautical mile race from Antigua to Bermuda will start on 12 May 2017 following the 50th edition of Antigua Sailing Week. Competing yachts will arrive in Bermuda for the Louis Vuitton America's Cup Qualifiers, the 35th America's Cup Match, America's Cup Superyacht Regatta, J Class Regatta and the Red Bull Youth America's Cup.

"The America's Cup excitement in Bermuda continues to grow. Last weekend we had M32 match racing, J105's, IOD's racing and the Bermuda Optimist World Championship trials all happening in the Great Sound with Oracle, Softbank and Artemis screaming by, testing their new boats. It's quite a sight from the Optimist Committee boat having Softbank (Team Japan) do a foiling gybe around the pin end of the start line! Monterey (Farr PH56) has been in Europe since competing in the Newport Bermuda Race in 2004 and we raced in the Rolex Middle Sea Race in Malta in 2008. Phaedo3 Smash the '600 after Epic Duel - Lloyd Thornburg's MOD70 Phaedo3 Breaks RORC Caribbean 600 Multihull Record: Hurtling around the Caribbean at speeds in excess of 30 knots and topping out nearer 40, often barely a boat length apart, the epic duel between MOD70s Concise 10 and Phaedo3 came to a conclusion after 32 hours of hot racing. Lloyd Thornburg's MOD70 Phaedo3, co-skippered by Brian Thompson crossed the finish line at Fort Charlotte in an elapsed time of 31 hours, 59 minutes, 04 seconds, breaking their own multihull race record set last year by 1 hour 34 minutes 26 seconds. Barely out of sight of each other the entire race, Tony Lawson's MOD70 Concise 10, skippered by Ned Collier Wakefield was just 9mins 52seconds behind. The superyachts in Falmouth Harbour heralded the arrival of Phaedo3 and Concise 10 with a cacophony of horns as hundreds of race fans gathered dockside to cheer the two teams to the dock.

RORC Transatlantic Race - Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club in association with The International Maxi Association - MOD's flying west and gone fishing on Nomad IV:

Day Four of the RORC Transatlantic Race and the MOD 70s are heading west at alarming speed.Zed 6 is about to have it all on to the north and the IRC fleet is experiencing light winds in the high pressure off the Western Sahara.

Lloyd Thornburg's Phaedo3, skippered by Brian Thompson and Tony Lawson's Concise 10/Ms Barbados, skippered by Ned Collier Wakefield gybed west as the sunset yesterday. Concise took a more southerly line than Phaedo3, recognising the low pressure system to the south.Phaedo3 responded by gybing further south, giving up precious miles to cover the potential advantage. Phaedo3 still holds the upper hand but Concise 10 are still very much in striking distance. Concise 10 sent in the video above via satellite link.

The three Maxis racing in the RORC Transatlantic Race have experienced light winds for the last 24 hours. Southern Wind 94, Windfall, skippered by Irish Olympic sailor Timothy Goodbody fell back after leading IRC overall on Day Three. Will Apold's Canadian Swan 78, Valkyrie cashed in on their southerly route through the Canaries and added to the bank via their tall rig and narrow hull shape, to glide into the lead on IRC corrected time from the other two Maxis. Jean-Paul Riviere's French Finot Conq 100, Nomad IV used the slow going to good measure with their Russian guests casting a line for 'the catch of the day'. Nomad IV should get into better pressure today and significantly, before the other two Maxis, which should see the team extend their lead on the water in the monohull fleet.

Gerald Bibot & Michel Kleinjans Belgian catamaran, Zed 6 gybed south yesterday afternoon after reaching a latitude of 33 degrees north which is further north than all of Florida. No doubt the Belgians will be reaching for the hot chocolate today. The wind direction is predicted to strengthen and turn to the south. This will put the 42ft catamaran into strong headwinds and the potential for big confused seas. "The boat is fantastic!" exclaimed Gerald by satellite link. " It's very fast and very sensible to any bad tuning. We stay very safe, sheets off the self-tailing and mostly in hands all the time. So it is a bit more exhausting than a Class40. We got the news this morning that the MODs are 200 nm closer than us to finish. It will be interesting to see how many days they will lead on us in the end. And who knows? I just heard that Gonzalo (Tales II) stopped in the Canaries for a rudder repair and re-started. That's good news. We have similar speeds on some angles, so it is important for us to have her as a benchmark on both sides of the pressure ridge."

With the light winds experienced yesterday and last night the clutch of 40ft yachts have come to the fore after IRC corrected time. Provisionally, J/120 Nunatak raced Two Handed by Chris Frost and Elin Haf Davies is leading the IRC fleet after time correction. Not wishing to dampenNunatak's fireworks, this may be due to the fact that Nunatak has taken a more westerly route, closer to the rhumb line. In doing so Nunatak has stayed in the high pressure vacuum but bytomorrow morning fresh winds are likely from the east, which will improve their position.

Mike Gascoyne, skipper of Class40 checked in with the RORC media team via satellite and sportingly said he was pleased to see their rival Tales II back in the race: "We had always planned to head for the southerly route and the weather files during the first night confirmed that choice," confirmed Mike. "We gybed south between Tenerife and La Palma but a couple of tactile errors meant we lost a few hours in some light patches before breaking free from the islands and heading south. We re-passed Aloha early this morning having clearly lost some miles between the islands. It was a shame for Tales II to have the rudder problem as they were really flying off the start. I'm sure with the crew they have on board they will be looking to catch us but we will do our best to make life hard for them. Life on board is good, currently pushing south west with A3, staysail and full main in 15kts of breeze and contemplating a full English breakfast for the crew, not easy to do on a jet-boil."

Franck Cammas injured his right leg - Groupama Team France: "During training for the America's Cup on Monday, November 30, Franck Cammas, skipper of Groupama Team France was seriously wounded in the right leg. As part of the preparation for the America's Cup, Franck Cammas and his team were training with two boats (GC32) at the National Sailing School in Quiberon Bay.   With winds at 17 knots, and while he was at the helm, the champion went overboard and the rudder hit his right leg while the hydrofoil catamaran was moving at full speed."

Franck Cammas undergoes a successful operation: "Injuring his right leg on Monday 30 November during a crew training session in Quiberon Bay, Brittany, aboard a 10-metre long flying catamaran, the skipper of Groupama Team France will be away from the race zone for several weeks. The orthopaedic surgery department at the University Hospital Hôtel Dieu in Nantes operated on a double Tibia-Fibula fracture early evening yesterday and Franck Cammas will begin his rehabilitation in January 2016...." RC44 Virgin Gorda Cup, RORC Transatlantic Updates, Sailing Videos

Day 2 Fleet Racing - RC44 Virgin Gorda Cup: Despite the wind gods repeatedly throwing curve balls at competitors, Torbjörn Törnqvist and his Artemis Racing crew firmly consolidated their lead in the RC44 Virgin Gorda Cup regatta today. The Swedish team led going into the day and promptly won the opening two races and followed this up with a 6-2, making them top scoring boat of the day, eight points clear of Vladimir Liubomirov's Bronenosec Sailing Team in second overall. Bronenosec Sailing Team survived best in race three when a small squall passed through North Sound. Now second, while Vladimir Prosikhin's Team Nika has dropped to fourth, Bronenosec is currently favourite to win the overall RC44 Fleet Racing championship. John Bassadone's Peninsula Petroleum finally came good in the last race, while a solid 2-2-1 in the final three races elevated the Gibraltar-based team to third overall. Published Nov 28, 2015. Regatta cancelled after shipping blunder | The Royal Gazette:Bermuda Sailing: "The Flying Phantom Series finale has been cancelled. The regatta featuring 18-foot foiling catamarans, which was scheduled to take place on the Great Sound next week, was supposed to start on Sunday. However, the start was postponed after a container housing ten Phantom catamarans from Europe arrived on the Island on November 16 on the Oleander cargo ship, but was mistakenly then shipped to New York the following day. Despite efforts to salvage the event, including having the boats returned to the Island by Monday, the decision has been made to cancel the regatta."

R4WO - AZORES TO BERMUDAS LEG - Published on Apr 6, 2015: The "Race for Water Odyssey" (R4WO) is an expedition that aims to reach the beaches of islands located in the ocean's 5 vortexes of trash, in order to conduct the first global assessment of plastic pollution in oceans, and highlight its consequences on the populations. All this, in a record time of under 300 days, thanks to a racing trimaran, the "MOD70 Race for Water". R4WO hopes to find answers to this question, which represents the worst ecological catastrophe in history.


R4WO - CAPSIZE OF THE MOD70 RACE FOR WATER (EN) Published on Sep 23, 2015: On her way from the Koror Islands to Chagos Islands, in the Indian Ocean, the MOD70 trimaran "Race for Water" capsized on Saturday 12th of September at 8:15PM (GMT +1), 90 miles South East from the Chagos Archipelago. As they were navigating by night with 18 to 20 knots of wind, a strong gust of wind turned the boat over.

News - Race for Water: "The Race for Water Odyssey (R4WO) is back in Bordeaux to conclude this unprecedented human and scientific adventure started in the same city on 15 March. In nine months, the R4WO has made 17 stops in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian to explore, analyze and raise awareness of water pollution by plastic. A first observation, dramatic: the plastic pollutes everywhere. After traveling more than 32,000 miles across three oceans, sampled many beaches, encountered a thousand personalities, and experienced the painful ordeal of a capsize, environmental expedition found today the city starting its journey . In Bordeaux, it makes an initial assessment of these 9 months of data collection on plastic pollution and personalities and the public awareness about the urgency of action. Using a standardized protocol, based on that of NOAA, the expedition teams have sampled over 30 beaches, located in five major waste accumulation areas. The various partner institutions such as the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland), the University of Bordeaux (France) and the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) are currently analyzing the collected samples. For their part, the Duke University and Oregon State (USA) study images taken by the drone of senseFly eBee company. Results are expected in 2016...."

Rolex Fastnet Race 2015 - Line honours decided - 19 August 2015 - Day 4 of the 2015 Rolex Fastnet Race. The leading yachts have begun arriving in Plymouth having completed the famous 603-nautical mile course from Cowes, Isle of Wight via Ireland’s mythical Fastnet rock. Jim Clark’s 100-ft Maxi Comanche from the United States claims monohull line honours finishing a mere 4 minutes ahead of compatriot George David’s 88-ft Rambler. Swiss yacht Spindrift 2 claims the multihull line honours crown


Peter Aschenbrenner, owner of the 63ft trimaran Paradox at the finish in Plymouth. - Paradox benefitted from the weather front that gave much relieved windless Rolex Fastnet Race fleet some breeze at last, albeit with the accompanying rain. They sped past the Lizard at 34 knots and arrived Wednesday morning in Plymouth with a good chance of winning the multihull prize on handicap.


Rolex Fastnet Race 2015 - Oman Sail CEO David Graham sailed onboard the MOD70 Musandam Oman Sail for his first Rolex Fastnet race. They finished second MOD 70 in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
