Miami center of sailing this week - Outdoors - MiamiHerald.com: " . . . The marquee event of sailing week is the Bacardi Cup on Monday through Saturday — one of the longest-running sporting events in the western hemisphere now in its 87th year — featuring as many as 60 Star-class sailboats from 15 countries. The Star — sailing’s oldest Olympic class — will not compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, but the venerable keelboat still draws some of the most competitive racers in the world. The two-person team with the lowest score at the conclusion of racing Saturday gets to drink rum from the silverTrofeo Bacardi. The Stars will be joined in the bay Thursday through Saturday by five other one-design classes: Audi Melges 20; J 70; Viper 640; Melges 24; and, new this year, VX One — a sport boat just launched in 2011. The social center for the festivities is Kennedy Park, but the event is co-hosted by the US Sailing Center; Coral Reef Yacht Club; Coconut Grove Sailing Club and Shake-A-Leg Miami." More on the Bacardi Miami Sailing Week: http://www.miamisailingweek.com/ and http://www.yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=915

One dead, five rescued in San Clemente Island sailboat accident - latimes.com: " . . . The 30-foot sailboat Uncontrollable Urge issued a mayday call about 9:30 p.m. Friday as the boat's rudder failed and the craft began drifting toward the rocky shore of the island. Initially the sailors declined assistance from the Coast Guard and other boaters. But about 11 p.m., as the sailors attempted to anchor the vessel, its anchor would not catch and the vessel drifted even closer to shore. The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter from San Diego and the cutter Edisto was diverted to the scene. Finally, the sailboat entered the surf line and was broken apart by waves, forcing the crew to abandon the vessel. Six sailors were hoisted into the MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and taken to a hospital where one man was pronounced dead, the Coast Guard said. . . ."

Crews Remove Yacht Grounded by Alleged Thieves - ABC News: "Crews removed an 82-foot yacht from a Northern California beach early Tuesday after authorities say three people stole it, stocked it with pizza and beer, then drove it a little more than 20 miles before running it aground. The luxury vessel "Darlin" was pulled from the sand at Pacifica State Beach, where it was stuck for nearly a day. Pacifica police arrested Leslie Gardner, 63, Dario Mira, 54, and Lisa Modawell, 56, on suspicion of grand theft and conspiracy. Each of the three was being held on more than $1 million bail. The strange tale began early Monday when beachgoers phoned police to report the sailboat in trouble. The yacht was trapped in shallow water at low tide and unable to get back out to sea. A few wetsuit-clad surfers had paddled out in the frigid water near the grounded vessel as its hull was battered by 4- to 5-foot waves. . . ."

Bacardi Miami Sailing Week and Gill Commodore Cup video

Gill Commodore's Cup - 33rd St. Maarten Heineken Regatta by Leighton O'Connor
"Not a bad day for the Gill Commodore's Cup today. 10-12 knots of breeze, 2-3 foot seas, clear skies and lots of turquoise water. I took a couple thousands images and edited them down to neat little video about 4 minutes long. We had a cast of characters on the media boat today. Regatta photographer Bob Griesser, writer Herb McCormick and Roland Fardeau from Voile et Voilers Magazine. Lots of arm chair quarter backing today watching crews getting their feet wet on charter boats. Some pretty messy stuff with kites."

Miami Sailing Week: "For the fourth year in a row Miami Sailing Week is offering competitors from a variety of different one-design classes the opportunity to compete during this fun and exciting event on the beautiful waters of Biscayne Bay.   This will be the Star Class 86th consecutive year partnering with Bacardi, a tradition that begun in Cuba then in Miami since 1962 making it this year the 50th anniversary. After only four years, BACARDI Miami Sailing Week has become a world famous event attracting the best national and international sailors. Considered by many one of the top-ten sailing events in the world!   Returning for 2013 and ready to give the best they’ve got are the Viper 640, Melges 20, Melges 24 and J/80’s classes. This year the J/70’s will be joining the group and we look forward to seeing them taking part in their first regatta in South Florida."
