Video documentation of the El Faro wreckage and associated debris field from the CURV-21 remotely operated vehicle. Published on Jan 3, 2016 - As part of its continuing investigation into the sinking of the cargo ship El Faro in the Atlantic Ocean in October, the National Transportation Safety Board has opened the accident docket and released underwater images and video of the vessel.

The US flagged ship, owned by Sea Star Line, LLC, and operated by TOTE Services, went missing on Oct. 1 during Hurricane Joaquin and was located on Oct. 31, 2015, in about 15,000 feet of water in the vicinity of its last known position near Crooked Island, Bahamas. Twenty-eight US crewmembers and five Polish workers were on board.

The images on the El Faro investigation that the NTSB has released, including the nine underwater photos published in the accident docket today, are available at: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ntsb/sets/72157659149033059.

Jules Verne Trophy - Jan 4, 2016 updates:
IDEC SPORT SAILING | FRANCIS JOYON: “IT’S GOING TO BE FAIRLY VIOLENT”: "4 January 2016 Right in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Francis Joyon and his men are giving it their all for this final battle, clocking up supersonic speeds. In four days, they are expected to cross the line off Ushant. But before that, they have some rough weather ahead…"
Spindrift 2 - DAY 44 | Jules Verne: "Our goal has always been to cross the finish line, finish the work we started on November 22 and complete the circle on this voyage around the world. Nothing has changed. Our routing indicates that we are expected to cross the line on January 8 in the middle of the day, leaving us 36-48 hours, or more than 1,000 miles behind Banque Populaire V."

Spindrift 2 - DAY 42 | Jules Verne: "After a slow-motion climb up the South Atlantic, and an Intertropical Convergence Zone, which though not very active, was ultimately quite extended, the men and woman on board Spindrift 2 are once again registering high speeds. And it feels good. Spindrift 2 has been making 30 knots now for more than 24 hours, reaching in big seas. The deck is wet and the bows smoking. But above all there is that feeling that we are making progress on the road - the meteorological road map anyway."

IDEC SPORT SAILING | HEADING FOR A RAPID RETURN IN THE ATLANTIC: "2 January 2016 With four days and a few hours to go to the record time for the Trophée Jules Verne - Jules Verne Trophy - and with 3000 miles left to sail in the North Atlantic, Francis Joyon, Clément Surtel, Gwénolé Gahinet, Alex Pella, Bernard Stamm and Boris Herrmann have very little chance now of finishing before the deadline of 1644hrs on Wednesday 6th January. The men on IDEC SPORT, caught in a patch of calms for three days off the coast of Southern Brazil have accepted that, but show no regrets...."

Extreme Sailing Series Act 5 Cardiff, Video Highlights

Extreme Sailing Series Act 5 Cardiff, Video Highlights Above - Cardiff has delivered a festival atmosphere at Act 5 of the 2014 Extreme Sailing Series global tour presented by Land Rover, making the half way stage of the season. With the pressure on the whole fleet to deliver a strong performance. Cardiff Bay threw everything at the fleet of 11 high-performance carbon fibre catamarans in front of 90,000 spectators over four days, that saw the teams jostle for every point, until a three-way final race shoot out between the leading pack – The Wave, Muscat, Alinghi and J.P. Morgan BAR - with all three leaning on each other hard as they fought to gain an advantage.

Three-way shoot out at the top as Oman fly the flag on British waters at the Extreme Sailing Series™ » Extreme Sailing Series: "Cardiff Bay saved the best for last for the 11-boat Extreme 40 fleet, where Alinghi, The Wave, Muscat and J.P. Morgan BAR battled it out until the bitter end for the top positions, in one of the closest – and most exciting – three-horse fights seen in the Series, which resulted in a three way collision and three consecutive penalties to boot in the final race. You couldn’t have scripted a better final, with the three leaders leaning on each other hard as they tried to gain the upper hand and The Wave, Muscat took advantage of the tussle to sail away with the win at Act 5 presented by Land Rover - and importantly homing in on Alinghi on the overall 2014 Series leaderboard...."

Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week - News: "The final day of racing at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week delivered sparkling conditions with plenty of sun and wind, including gusts of 25 knots that gave exhilarating and energetic racing under predominately cloudless skies. Malcolm Hutchings and Andrew Ramsey’s Lady Penelope had already won the Squib class with a day to spare, having won all but one race. J/News Articles: J/24 Dominates Hot Rum Sailing Series!: "...This year’s three weekend series saw just about every weather condition imaginable.  The first weekend was fraught with almost no wind with most big boats barely finishing and most littler boats having to take DNFs (sometimes entire divisions!).  The second go-around saw a gorgeous sunny day with 5-8 kts of breeze from the West.  Then, the final weekend was cool, partly cloudy with foggy drizzle and a strong breeze of 10-20 kts from the SW. For the first time in years, the little boats predominated.  In fact, it was the “classic” J/24 CAROLINA sailed by Ben Nieting that not only took overall honors, winning the last race overall, but also winning Class 5!  Not far behind them overall was Dennis & Sharon Case’s J/105 WINGS, taking sixth overall and first in Class 3 and in ninth overall was Jim Madden’s J/125 STARK RAVING MAD IV...."

Planning underway for One Ton Cup Revisited regatta >> Scuttlebutt Sailing News: "The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron has started formalised planning for a One Ton Cup Revisited regatta in Auckland, in February/March 2015. Its decision to proceed with the event is based on a strong international expression of interest in competing. That response includes 16 would-be entries and 4 would-be charterers, from NZ (9), Australia (4), Sweden (2), UK (2), Canada (2) and the USA (1). “That is a highly promising outcome,” says RNZYS commodore Steve Burrett “good enough for us to start planning in earnest. “We set ourselves a conservative target of a minimum 10-boat fleet if we were to stage the event. Based on the reaction to date, we are confident enough to proceed with formal planning, convinced there will be an even stronger uptake as word of the regatta spreads further”."
